Chapter 6 - THE LETTER ELENA VALE LEFT BEHINDAdrian did not believe Samuel.

Not at first.
“My mother hated the business.”
Samuel shook his head.
“She hated your father.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
“She was trying to get out.”
Naomi watched Adrian carefully.
Something about his anger looked different.
Less like power.
More like a son defending the only good memory he had left.
Samuel explained.
Thirteen years earlier, Elena Vale had secretly contacted customs investigators.
Thomas Bennett became her intermediary.
She knew Dominic Vale was hiding money.
She suspected Elias Rook was running unauthorized contraband through Vale terminals.
“She helped my father?” Naomi asked.
“Yes.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Then why was she watching him?”
“To keep him alive.”
Silence.
Samuel continued.
“Elena believed phones were compromised. She had Thomas followed because she wanted to know whether Rook reached him.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she stop it?”
“She tried.”
Samuel looked toward Naomi.
“Your father refused to leave.”
That sounded like Thomas.
Naomi remembered him arguing with traffic officers.
Insurance companies.
School administrators.
The refrigerator repairman.
Thomas Bennett had considered stubbornness a moral virtue.
Samuel continued.
“The night before he died, Elena offered him money and new identities for both daughters.”
Naomi’s throat tightened.
“He said no?”
“He said he wouldn’t make his girls grow up thinking their father ran.”
Naomi began crying.
Adrian remained utterly still.
“What happened after the crash?” he asked.
“Elena copied what she could. She hid it.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Samuel looked at Adrian.
“She told me one day you might become different from your father.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“She waited too long.”
“No.”
Samuel shook his head.
“She was waiting for you to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Whether you wanted the company or the truth.”
Adrian looked away.
Five years earlier Elena died before she could tell him.
Or perhaps she had tried.
He remembered one of her final lucid conversations.
She had taken his hand and said:
Don’t inherit what you can survive losing.
He thought she meant money.
Now he understood.
Dom accepted a cooperation agreement.
His testimony helped federal investigators seize six hidden warehouses and identify twenty-three people connected to Elias Rook’s shadow network.
For four days, Elias remained missing.
Naomi believed perhaps the worst danger had passed.
Then a package arrived at the lake house.
No return address.
Inside was one prenatal vitamin bottle.
Her bottle.
Adrian went pale.
Lucas immediately bagged it.
Naomi stared at the label.
“My apartment.”
“Yes.”
Someone had taken the bottle during the burglary.
A note lay beneath it.
YOUR HUSBAND KNEW WHO I WAS BEFORE HE MARRIED YOU.
Naomi looked at Adrian.
He did not speak.
That silence terrified her.
“Adrian.”
“I knew your father’s name.”
She stopped breathing.
“What?”
“Not everything.”
“You told me you only connected him eleven months ago.”
“I connected the file eleven months ago.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“When we met, I recognized Bennett.”
“Bennett is one of the most common names in America.”
“Your father’s first name came up on our second date.”
Naomi remembered.
They had eaten pizza in a restaurant Adrian secretly owned but pretended he had chosen randomly.
She had told him about Thomas.
Customs investigator.
Car accident.
Seventeen-year-old daughter left behind.
“What did you know then?”
“That my father once mentioned an inspector named Thomas Bennett.”
Naomi stared.
“And you married me anyway?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you investigate before?”
“Because I didn’t want our relationship to become an investigation.”
The irony almost made her laugh.
“You let me marry into the family my father investigated.”
“I did not know the connection was dangerous.”
“You knew enough to remember his name.”
“Yes.”
Naomi backed away.
The pattern became unbearable.
Each truth arrived only after she cornered him.
Each admission was slightly worse than the one before.
“You keep telling me you’re trying to change.”
“I am.”
“Then stop making me excavate you.”
Adrian flinched.
Naomi continued.
“I need the whole truth now.”
“You have it.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t believe that anymore.”
She packed that night.
Adrian did not stop her.
Lucas arranged secure housing under federal protection.
Naomi refused Adrian’s guards.
He accepted that too.
Before she left, he stood beside the door.
“You’re right.”
She looked at him.
“I treated information like power.”
His voice was quiet.
“Even with you.”
Naomi’s eyes filled.
“That is why I stopped feeling married.”
“I know.”
She almost told him not to say it.
Instead she waited.
Adrian continued.
“I loved you like something I had to protect, not someone I had to trust.”
For once, the sentence felt complete.
Naomi left anyway.
Three days later, Elias Rook was arrested.
No gunfight.
No dramatic chase.
FBI agents found him in a private hangar outside Milwaukee attempting to board a chartered jet under another name.
He possessed two passports.
$600,000 in cash.
And documents linking him to the supplements placed in Naomi’s vitamin bottle.
The person who physically tampered with them was a kitchen employee Elias had paid.
The employee confessed.
Naomi should have felt safe.
Instead, she felt empty.
The mastermind was caught.
The poisoning was solved.
Her father’s death was explained.
Adrian’s mother had tried to help.
The story seemed finished.
Then Agent Reyes requested a private meeting.
Naomi arrived expecting paperwork.
Instead, Reyes placed a photograph on the table.
Elias Rook entering the courthouse parking garage.
Dated six weeks before Naomi filed for divorce.
“With whom?” Naomi asked.
Reyes placed down a second photograph.
Naomi froze.
The person meeting Elias was her divorce attorney.
Daniel Price.
Naomi stared at Reyes.
“No.”
“We searched Rook’s phone.”
“What did they discuss?”
“Your marriage.”
Her stomach dropped.
Reyes continued.
“Price was paid to encourage you to file quickly.”
Naomi stopped breathing.
“By Elias?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Rook believed Adrian was close to exposing him.”
Naomi’s hand moved toward her stomach.
Reyes nodded.
“He wanted you separated from Adrian before the investigation broke.”
“That doesn’t make sense. Why help me leave if he wanted to hurt me?”
“We wondered the same thing.”
Reyes slid another document across the table.
It was an internal memo.
Rook had written:
Once Bennett leaves Vale protection, remove her. Make it look voluntary. Adrian will believe she disappeared because of him.
Naomi’s blood went cold.
The divorce had never been the objective.
May you like
Isolation was.
And the attorney Naomi trusted to help her escape Adrian’s world had been paid by the man trying to kill her.
