Chapter 10 - THE MESSAGE THAT STARTED A WAR

The Moretti estate was burning when they arrived.

Flames climbed the eastern wing. Smoke poured through the upper windows. Security personnel moved across the grounds, directing firefighters toward the main entrance.

Dante stepped out of the SUV.

"Where's Victor?"

Nico checked his phone.

"Inside the main house. He refused to leave."

Dante looked toward the flames.

"Get everyone out."

Norah grabbed his arm.

"Don't go in there."

He looked at her.

"He's responsible for all of this."

"And if you die trying to reach him, what happens?"

Dante had no answer.

For the first time, someone was asking him to stay.

Not because they feared what he could do.

Because they cared whether he survived.

He touched her shoulder.

"Stay with Nico."

Then he walked toward the house.

Victor was waiting in the library.

He stood beside the fireplace, holding a glass of whiskey.

"Daniel."

Dante stopped at the entrance.

"Don't call me that."

Victor smiled.

"Still angry?"

"You killed Elena."

"I protected this family."

"You killed Thomas Hayes."

"He was going to destroy us."

"And Margaret?"

Victor looked away.

"She made her own choices."

Dante stepped closer.

"Why did you let Norah live?"

Victor's smile returned.

"Because I didn't know who she was until recently."

"Now you do."

"Now I do."

Victor placed his glass down.

"Your father was a complicated man. He loved your mother. He loved Margaret. He made mistakes."

Dante's expression darkened.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Victor opened a drawer and removed a photograph.

It showed Alessandro Moretti standing between two women.

One was Dante's mother.

The other was Margaret Hayes.

On the back were three names.

Alessandro.

Dante.

Norah.

Victor looked at him.

"Your father knew about her. He wanted to bring her into the family. Your mother refused."

"Why?"

"Because she knew what happened to the women who became part of this family."

A loud crack sounded from the ceiling.

The fire was spreading.

Victor continued.

"Elena wanted to expose everything. Margaret wanted to disappear. Thomas wanted justice. And you, Daniel, wanted to inherit an empire."

Dante stared at him.

"You used me."

"I raised you."

"You made me believe my sister's death was an accident."

"I gave you a reason to survive."

Dante took another step.

"No. You gave me a reason to become exactly what you wanted."

Victor reached into his jacket.

Dante's hand moved faster.

A gunshot shattered the library window.

Victor fell backward, dropping his weapon.

Dante stood over him.

For a moment, the room was silent except for the crackling fire.

Victor looked up.

"Do it."

Dante stared at the man who had destroyed his family.

Then he lowered his weapon.

"No."

Victor laughed weakly.

"You're becoming soft."

Dante turned toward the door.

"I'm becoming something you never understood."

He left Victor alive.

But he didn't leave him free.

Nico's men secured the house and handed Victor over to federal agents along with the evidence Rachel had preserved.

For the first time in decades, the Moretti empire was facing a reckoning.

Three weeks later, Norah stood in a quiet cemetery.

Two fresh bouquets rested against the headstones of Thomas and Margaret Hayes.

Tyler stood beside her.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Norah took his hand.

"I know."

She had lost a year of her life to Grant. She had lost the family history she thought she understood. And she had discovered that the man who saved her was connected to every secret she had spent her life trying to escape.

But she was still standing.

That mattered.

Dante waited near the entrance.

He wore a black coat and held a single white rose.

He approached slowly.

"I didn't know whether you'd want me here."

Norah looked at him.

"You can stay."

He placed the rose beside Margaret's grave.

For a moment, they stood together without speaking.

Then Norah asked, "What happens now?"

Dante looked toward the distant city.

"Victor will face trial. The people who helped him will be investigated. And I'll spend the rest of my life making sure nobody else gets hurt because of what my family built."

"That sounds difficult."

"It will be."

She gave him a faint smile.

"Good. You look like you need something difficult."

For the first time, Dante laughed.

Not loudly.

Not freely.

But genuinely.

Six months later, Norah had her own apartment.

She had returned to work, begun therapy, and started helping women who needed emergency housing and legal support.

Tyler visited every Sunday.

Dante visited less often than she wanted and more often than he admitted.

He never demanded that she forgive him for the sins of his family.

He never asked her to accept the Moretti name.

He simply showed up.

One evening, Norah received a message from an unknown number.

She stared at the screen.

The words were simple.

You helped put Victor away. But Victor was only the man you could see. Ask Dante what happened to Alessandro Moretti's first wife.

Her fingers went cold.

A photograph arrived.

It showed a woman standing beside Alessandro Moretti.

Norah recognized her face.

She had seen it in the family photographs at the estate.

But there was something written on the back.

SHE WAS ALIVE WHEN THEY BURIED HER.

Norah immediately called Dante.

He answered on the first ring.

"Norah?"

She swallowed.

"I think there's something you need to see."

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"What did you receive?"

She looked at the photograph again.

"Who was your father's first wife?"

Dante didn't answer.

And that silence frightened her more than Grant's fist ever had.

Because somewhere in the background, she heard a door close.

Then Dante whispered:

"Norah, lock your apartment. Don't open the door for anyone."

The call went dead.

Across Bellhaven, a black SUV pulled up outside her building.

And inside it, a woman who had supposedly been dead for thirty years opened her eyes.
