Chapter 1 - The Slap That Silenced the Duca FamilyShe Slapped the Mafia Boss in Front of His Family—Then He Revealed the Secret She’d Been Hiding

Every man at the dinner table froze.
Nobody touched Roman Duca. Not his enemies, not his rivals, not even the people who feared him most.
But Sophia had just slapped him in front of his entire family.
The sound cracked through the Duca mansion and stopped every conversation around the enormous dining table.
Roman slowly turned his face back toward his wife.
For 5 seconds, nobody seemed to breathe.
There were 20 people gathered around the table: Roman’s brothers, cousins, business partners, old family friends, and senior members of the Duca organization. These were men who had watched Roman make enemies disappear with a single phone call. Men who had seen him stare down armed rivals without blinking.
And Sophia had struck him across the face in front of all of them.
Roman’s younger brother, Matteo, immediately stood.
“Roman.”
Roman raised 1 hand.
Everyone froze.
Sophia’s chest rose and fell rapidly. Anger filled her eyes, but beneath it was something deeper.
Pain.
Roman looked at her.
She expected rage. She expected punishment.
Instead, the corner of his mouth slowly lifted into a small, almost disturbing smile.
Then he turned toward his family.
“You want to know why she did that?”
Nobody answered.
Roman touched the cheek where Sophia’s hand had landed.
“Then let her tell you.”
Sophia’s eyes widened.
“Roman.”
He stepped closer.
“Tell them.”
She shook her head.
“I can’t.”
Roman’s smile disappeared.
“You can.”
At the opposite end of the table, his mother, Isabella Duca, watched them carefully.
She was an elegant woman in her late 60s, always perfectly dressed, always composed.
But when Sophia looked toward her, Isabella’s expression changed for only a second.
Fear.
Sophia noticed.
Roman noticed Sophia noticing.
The atmosphere in the room shifted.
Roman pulled out the chair beside him.
“Sit.”
Sophia did not move.
“I said sit.”
She met his eyes.
“You’re still pretending.”
Roman’s jaw tightened.
“Not here.”
“Then where?”
“After dinner.”
Sophia gave a bitter laugh.
“There isn’t going to be an after-dinner silence.”
She looked around the table.
“Because tonight, everyone is going to hear the truth.”
Roman’s brothers exchanged confused looks.
Isabella slowly placed her wineglass on the table.
“Sophia,” she said quietly. “This isn’t the place for family drama.”
Sophia turned toward her.
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“This is exactly the place.”
Roman watched his wife carefully.
For months, he had known something was wrong.
Sophia had become distant. She barely slept. She avoided his questions. Sometimes he caught her staring at him as though she were trying to remember a man he no longer was.
He had never imagined this.
He had never imagined that the woman he married would one day stand before his entire family and slap him.
5 years earlier, Sophia had been completely different.
She was 24, poor, and working 2 jobs simply to survive.
Roman had met her on the worst night of her life.
At least, that was the story everyone knew.
Roman had told his family that Sophia was simply a woman he had fallen in love with.
That was not the truth.
Their first meeting was a secret Roman had buried for 5 years.
Sophia looked at him.
“You told them you saved me.”
Roman said nothing.
“You told them you found me after my father died.”
Still nothing.
“You told them you gave me a home when I had nowhere to go.”
Roman’s eyes hardened.
“Sophia.”
She pointed at him.
“You never told them what happened before that.”
Isabella abruptly stood.
“That is enough.”
Sophia turned toward her.
“No, it’s not.”
Isabella’s expression became cold.
“You don’t understand what you’re accusing people of.”
Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I understand perfectly.”
Roman stepped between them.
“Mother, sit down.”
Isabella stared at her son.
“You’re really going to let her do this?”
Roman looked at Sophia, then at his mother.
“Yes.”

The room fell silent again.
Sophia looked surprised.
