Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Was Buried

Dominic didn't speak for five full seconds.

Then he said, “My brother is dead.”

Marcus looked at the photograph on his screen.

“Apparently nobody told him.”

Adrian Calder had supposedly died eleven years earlier.

A warehouse fire.

Three bodies recovered.

One identified through a watch, dental fragments, and Dominic's father's certainty.

Dominic had been twenty-four.

Adrian twenty-seven.

Their relationship had been complicated, competitive, occasionally violent—but Adrian had still been his brother.

Dominic had carried his coffin.

Now Marcus had surveillance footage showing a living Adrian entering Serena's building four nights earlier.

By sunrise, Dominic was standing in his mother's library.

Eleanor Calder sat opposite him.

At sixty-three, she had silver hair, perfect posture, and the unnerving ability to make armed men feel like badly behaved schoolchildren.

She studied the photograph.

Then closed her eyes.

“You knew,” Dominic said.

Eleanor didn't answer.

His voice dropped.

“Mother.”

“Yes.”

The word detonated quietly.

Dominic stared at her.

Audrey, standing near the doorway, forgot her own anger for a moment.

“You knew Adrian was alive?”

Eleanor looked older suddenly.

“Not until three years ago.”

Dominic's hands curled.

“And you didn't tell me?”

“He contacted me once.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Dominic laughed without humor.

“Of course.”

“He said he blamed your father for the fire. He said he wanted nothing from this family except what he believed was owed to him.”

“And you paid him.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Two million.”

Dominic turned away.

Audrey recognized the movement.

It was what he did when fury became dangerous.

Eleanor looked at Audrey.

“I'm sorry you were dragged into this.”

Audrey's hand rested unconsciously on her stomach.

“So Adrian is behind Serena?”

“We don't know,” Dominic said.

Eleanor's expression shifted.

“I do.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Serena and Adrian knew each other before Serena ever met Dominic.”

Dominic turned.

“What?”

Eleanor walked to an antique cabinet and removed an envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Adrian and Serena together.

Young.

Laughing.

One showed Serena kissing his cheek.

The date printed on the back was fourteen years earlier.

Audrey felt the puzzle rearranging itself.

“Serena didn't come into Dominic's life accidentally.”

“No,” Eleanor said.

Dominic looked sick.

Serena had become his fiancée seven years ago.

Their engagement had lasted eleven months.

She had left abruptly after Dominic discovered she'd been secretly transferring money from one of his companies.

He had assumed greed.

Now it looked like infiltration.

Audrey stared at Dominic.

“Why come back now?”

Dominic looked at her stomach.

He understood before anyone else.

“An heir.”

The word chilled the room.

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“Your father structured the Calder family trusts badly. If Dominic dies without a direct descendant, a substantial portion returns to the surviving branch of the family.”

“Adrian,” Audrey whispered.

“Yes.”

“But now there's a baby.”

Silence.

Audrey suddenly felt nauseated.

This wasn't jealousy.

It wasn't revenge.

It was inheritance.

Dominic crossed the room toward her, then stopped before touching her.

“We'll change everything.”

Audrey looked up.

“What?”

“The trusts. My will. Every legal structure connected to you or the baby.”

“Dominic, that's not what I'm thinking about.”

“It should be.”

“No. I'm thinking that yesterday morning I was a woman excited to tell her husband she was pregnant. Twenty-four hours later I'm apparently carrying a financial motive for murder.”

His face tightened.

Audrey's voice cracked.

“I don't want this life.”

That sentence hurt him more visibly than anything she'd said.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“I should have left it before asking you to marry me.”

Audrey's eyes filled.

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Dominic had a hundred possible answers.

Power.

Loyalty.

Fear.

Family.

Instead he chose the ugliest truth.

“Because I thought I could have both.”

Audrey wiped her cheek.

“And Serena?”

His face hardened with shame.

“Because for one night I became exactly the man you were always afraid I'd become.”

Audrey turned away.

She still loved him.

That was the cruelest part.

Love didn't vanish because someone deserved your anger.

Sometimes it remained and made the anger hurt more.

Marcus entered.

“We found Serena.”

Dominic looked up.

“Where?”

“O'Hare.”

“Leaving?”

“No.”

Marcus placed a tablet on the table.

Security footage showed Serena entering an airport parking structure.

She wasn't carrying luggage.

She was carrying a small black case.

Then Adrian appeared.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred along one side of his face.

But unmistakably Calder.

Audrey watched him embrace Serena.

Then Serena handed him the case.

“What is that?” Audrey asked.

Marcus zoomed in.

Dominic recognized it.

His face changed.

“Access keys.”

“To what?”

“My private financial network.”

Audrey stared at him.

“Could she have gotten those yesterday?”

Dominic went completely still.

His eyes moved toward Audrey.

Then toward the remembered bedroom.

Serena in his shirt.

Her arms around his neck.

Her body positioned between Dominic and the safe hidden behind the dressing-room wall.

Dominic whispered:

“She wasn't there for me.”

And suddenly Audrey understood something that somehow made the betrayal even stranger.

May you like

Serena hadn't returned to steal Audrey's husband.

She had used Dominic's worst mistake to steal something much more dangerous.
