Chapter 6 - WHAT HIS BROTHER DIED FOR

Mara did not go alone.
She simply made everyone believe she did.
Julian argued for 11 minutes.
Raphael’s security chief argued for 7.
Mara ignored both.
Eleanor wanted the drive.
That made the drive leverage.
But Mara had something Eleanor did not know.
A copy.
The original remained locked away.
Mara carried a blank duplicate.
The address led to an abandoned shipping warehouse in Red Hook.
Rain hammered the roof.
Mara entered through a side door.
“Stop there.”
Eleanor’s voice echoed through the darkness.
Lights came on.
Raphael sat in the center of the warehouse, wrists bound behind him.
His lip was split.
Blood stained his collar.
But he was conscious.
His eyes found Mara.
Fury flashed through them.
Not at Eleanor.
At Mara.
Because she had come.
Eleanor stood behind him with 2 armed men.
“You always were obedient when children were involved,” Eleanor said.
Mara held up the drive.
“Let him go.”
Eleanor laughed.
“You really think this is about money?”
“It usually is with people who already have too much.”
Raphael almost smiled despite the blood on his mouth.
Eleanor did not.
She explained that Salvatore Carbone had built influence for decades. Judges. Union officials. Contractors. Police commanders.
Raphael had dismantled it piece by piece after inheriting control.
He called it legitimacy.
Eleanor called it weakness.
Vincent had discovered her plan to preserve the network.
“He threatened to tell Raphael,” Mara said.
“Yes.”
Raphael’s stare became lethal.
“You killed him.”
“I corrected his mistake.”
Silence.
Mara watched Raphael absorb the confession.
Something inside him broke without appearing on his face.
“You arranged the crash,” he said.
Eleanor shrugged.
“Your brother always drove too fast.”
Raphael surged against the restraints.
A gun pressed against his head.
“Raphael!”
Mara’s voice stopped him.
Eleanor extended her hand.
“The drive.”
Mara approached.
One step.
Another.
“Why frame me?”
“Because he loved you.”
Mara froze.
Raphael did too.
Eleanor smiled.
“Oh, neither of you said it. That made it almost embarrassing to watch. Raphael Carbone could order 50 armed men into a room without blinking, but asking a woman to dinner apparently terrified him.”
Mara looked at Raphael.
Wrong moment.
Terrible moment.
But something passed between them.
Eleanor continued.
“You were his vulnerability. And the perfect accountant for his downfall.”
“I’m not an accountant.”
“You’re meticulous. People believe meticulous women steal quietly.”
Mara reached the center of the room.
Eleanor took the drive.
“Now release him.”
“No.”
Mara had expected that.
Eleanor handed the drive to one of the men.
He connected it to a laptop.
Nothing.
His face changed.
“It’s empty.”
Eleanor turned.
Mara smiled.
“So is the account.”
For the first time, Eleanor looked afraid.
“What?”
“The $38 million never moved.”
Mara had redirected the authorization pathway before entering.
The transfer had triggered a forensic hold.
Every destination account was now preserved for investigators.
Eleanor raised the gun.
Then the warehouse lights exploded into darkness.
Julian.
Raphael threw himself sideways.
Gunfire cracked.
Mara dropped behind a steel crate.
Men shouted.
Within seconds, Carbone security flooded the building.
When emergency lights came on, Eleanor was on the floor.
Alive.
Disarmed.
Raphael had freed one hand against a broken metal edge and tackled the man guarding him.
Mara ran to him.
“Are you hurt?”
“You came here.”
“So did you.”
“I was kidnapped.”
“Technicality.”
His hands closed around her shoulders.
For one second Mara thought he might yell.
Instead, Raphael pulled her against him.
Hard.
His breathing shook.
That frightened her more than the gunfire.
“I thought she would kill you.”
Mara pressed her forehead against his chest.
“I thought she already killed you.”
Behind them, Eleanor laughed bitterly.
Raphael released Mara and turned.
“You think this ends anything?”
“It ends you.”
“No, Raphael. It begins with me.”
Eleanor looked at Julian.
“Ask your loyal friend who authorized Vincent’s route that night.”
Everyone went still.
Raphael slowly turned.
Julian’s face had gone white.
“What is she talking about?”
Julian said nothing.
Eleanor smiled.
“Tell him.”
Raphael stepped toward Julian.
“Tell me.”
Julian looked at the floor.
“I changed Vincent’s route.”
Mara stared.
Raphael’s voice became dangerously soft.
“Why?”
“He called me. Said someone was following him. I redirected him to the river road.”
“The road where he died.”
“Yes.”
Raphael hit him.
Julian fell.
Security moved forward.
Raphael raised one hand and stopped them.
Julian wiped blood from his mouth.
“I thought I was saving him.”
“Who told you the river road was clear?”
Julian looked toward Eleanor.
“She did.”
Raphael closed his eyes.
Eleanor had manipulated them all.
But Julian had hidden the truth for 6 years.
Police sirens approached.
The empire Eleanor had tried to preserve was finished.
Yet Raphael looked less victorious than Mara had ever seen him.
Because money could be recovered.
Criminals could be arrested.

But his brother was still dead.
And the friend standing before him had carried part of that death in silence.
