Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN HE CHOSE IN FRONT OF THE WORLD

Erica Laurent arrived at the Ryder charity gala wearing a silver gown worth more than most people's cars.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted her name.

She smiled.

Perfectly.

Confidently.

Because everyone knew Christian Ryder had once loved her.

And tonight, according to the rumors, he was preparing to make a public announcement.

Erica believed she already knew what it would be.

Amelia stood backstage.

She wore a simple ivory gown.

Her hair fell in soft waves.

A delicate necklace rested against her collarbone.

She looked beautiful.

But she was nervous.

Lucian stood beside her.

“You ready?”

Amelia looked toward the grand piano.

“I don't know.”

He smiled.

“You've waited six years for this.”

She touched the original handwritten score in her hands.

Six years.

Six years since her father sold her composition.

Six years since Erica Laurent took credit for her work.

Six years since Amelia stopped believing she could become a professional musician.

Now she had the chance to reclaim everything.

Not because she was Christian Ryder's wife.

Because she was Mia.

The composer.

The artist.

The woman she had been before the world convinced her she was nothing.

The lights dimmed.

Christian stepped onto the stage.

The ballroom fell silent.

He wore a black tuxedo.

His expression was serious.

“Thank you for coming tonight.”

The cameras turned toward him.

“For years, I believed power meant never needing anyone.”

He paused.

“I was wrong.”

Erica smiled from the front row.

Christian continued.

“I thought money could solve every problem.”

He looked toward the backstage entrance.

“But there was one person I couldn't buy.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

“One person who refused to accept my arrogance.”

Christian's voice softened.

“One person who taught me that love isn't ownership.”

Erica's smile faded.

Christian extended his hand toward the stage entrance.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like you to meet my wife.”

The ballroom went silent.

Then Amelia stepped into the light.

Erica stood.

“No.”

Christian smiled.

“Amelia Ryder.”

The cameras flashed.

Amelia walked toward him.

He took her hand.

“And the mother of my children.”

Applause filled the room.

But Christian wasn't finished.

“She's also the original composer of Dark Night, Starlight.”

Erica froze.

The entire ballroom turned toward her.

Christian looked at the audience.

“For six years, another artist took credit for her work.”

He paused.

“Tonight, the original composer will perform it herself.”

Amelia stepped toward the piano.

Her hands trembled.

Then she sat.

And began to play.

The first notes filled the ballroom.

Christian stood beside the stage.

He remembered hearing the composition years earlier.

He remembered believing Erica had written it.

He remembered falling in love with the music.

And now he finally understood why it had moved him so deeply.

Because the woman who created it was the same woman who had somehow reached the part of his heart he believed no longer existed.

Amelia played with her eyes closed.

She thought about her mother.

Her childhood.

Her stolen inheritance.

The hospital room.

The night Christian threw her away.

The months she spent alone.

And the moment she first held Noah and Grace.

Every memory became music.

When she finished, the ballroom erupted.

A standing ovation.

Amelia opened her eyes.

Tears streamed down her face.

Christian walked onto the stage.

He knelt beside her.

“Amelia.”

She stared at him.

He took out a small velvet box.

Inside was a diamond ring.

But it wasn't the ring from their contract marriage.

It was new.

Chosen for her.

Not because of a business arrangement.

Not because of his mother.

Not because she had given him children.

Because he loved her.

“Eight months ago,” Christian said, “I told you to disappear.”

The ballroom fell silent.

“I was cruel. I was arrogant. And I was wrong.”

Amelia began crying.

Christian continued.

“I can't give you back the months I stole from you.”

His voice broke.

“But I can spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to face another day alone.”

He looked into her eyes.

“Amelia Jones Ryder, will you marry me again?”

She stared at him.

Then whispered:

“We're already married.”

Christian smiled through tears.

“I know.”

He held up the ring.

“But this time, I'm asking.”

Amelia looked toward the front row.

Freya was holding Noah.

Lucian held Grace.

Her children were safe.

Her music was hers again.

And the man kneeling in front of her was no longer the cold stranger who had thrown her away.

He was a man who had learned how to love.

Amelia smiled.

“Yes.”

Christian closed his eyes.

She laughed through her tears.

“Yes, Christian. I'll marry you again.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then stood and kissed her gently.

The ballroom erupted.

Across the room, Erica watched in disbelief.

Everything she had stolen was slipping away.

The music.

The fame.

The man.

She turned toward the exit.

But two detectives were waiting.

“Erica Laurent?”

She stopped.

“We need to speak with you regarding the forged copyright documents.”

Her face went pale.

“I want my attorney.”

“Of course.”

As they escorted her out, she looked back toward the stage.

Amelia was smiling.

And for the first time in six years, Erica understood that stealing someone's work didn't mean stealing their talent.

Six months later, Amelia stood in the garden of the Ryder estate.

Noah and Grace were sleeping in their stroller.

Christian approached carrying two cups of coffee.

“Mrs. Ryder.”

She smiled.

“Mr. Ryder.”

He handed her a cup.

“How was rehearsal?”

“Good.”

“Still nervous about the concert?”

“A little.”

Christian wrapped an arm around her waist.

“You'll be incredible.”

Amelia leaned against him.

For a moment, everything was peaceful.

The garden.

The children.

The quiet morning sunlight.

Christian kissed her forehead.

“I love you.”

She looked up.

“I love you too.”

Then her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

Amelia opened the message.

Her smile disappeared.

Christian noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

She stared at the screen.

There was a photograph.

An old photograph.

Taken twenty-two years earlier.

Her mother stood beside a younger Freya Ryder.

And between them was a baby.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

THE RYDER FAMILY HAS BEEN LYING TO YOU SINCE BEFORE YOU WERE BORN.

Amelia's hands began shaking.

Christian took the photograph.

His expression changed.

Because he recognized the third person standing in the background.

A man everyone believed had died twenty years ago.

His father.

Christian slowly looked at Amelia.

“Where did you get this?”

Before she could answer, another message arrived.

Ask Freya why your mother really died.

Amelia looked toward the mansion.

Freya stood behind an upstairs window.

Watching them.

May you like

And when their eyes met, the older woman's face went white.
