Chapter 8 - The Life He Never Expected

Fourteen months later, Sheree opened her apartment door and found roses.

Not one bouquet.

Twenty-three.

They filled the hallway.

Mrs. Alvarez emerged from her apartment wearing slippers.

“If these are from that handsome criminal, tell him my birthday is Tuesday.”

Sheree laughed.

Gabriel had arranged them from prison.

Every bouquet contained one handwritten sentence.

Not romantic poetry.

Memories.

You threatened my stitches.

You hated my television.

You taught me pancakes require measuring cups.

You make terrible coffee.

The final card read:

Four hundred and twenty-six days. Then I come home.

Sheree pressed it against her chest.

Life had changed.

She had become head nurse in St. Jude’s trauma department.

The Moretti Foundation, now independently managed, funded a free emergency clinic named after Marcus Carter.

Gabriel had surrendered control of every criminal enterprise connected to his family.

Matteo took over the legitimate shipping company under federal supervision.

Anthony complained constantly about paperwork.

For the first time, the Moretti name was becoming boring.

Gabriel considered that progress.

Then Sheree began receiving anonymous calls.

Silence.

Breathing.

Nothing more.

She told Anthony.

Security returned.

Sheree hated it.

One evening she left the hospital and saw a familiar figure across the street.

Dr. Nolan Pierce.

He had disappeared months earlier.

“Nolan?”

He turned.

Then ran.

Sheree followed.

Terrible idea.

Predictable execution.

She caught him in a parking garage.

“Nolan!”

He stopped.

His face looked exhausted.

“You shouldn’t have followed me.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Sheree, listen carefully. Salvatore wasn’t the top of the network.”

Her stomach dropped.

“What?”

“He answered to someone.”

“Who?”

Nolan looked behind her.

His eyes widened.

A vehicle accelerated toward them.

Nolan shoved Sheree aside.

The car struck him.

Sheree screamed.

The vehicle disappeared.

She crawled toward Nolan.

Blood spread beneath his head.

“Nolan.”

His hand grabbed hers.

“Your brother… left another file.”

“Where?”

“Where you learned to save lives.”

His eyes closed.

Nolan died before the ambulance arrived.

Sheree understood his message the next morning.

Marcus had paid her nursing-school tuition.

Her first anatomy textbook was still in storage.

Inside its cover, she found a key.

The key opened a safe-deposit box.

Inside was a ledger.

And a letter.

Ree,

If you’re reading this, I failed.

Sheree covered her mouth.

Marcus explained everything.

Salvatore had been only one branch of a national network linking organized crime to corporate executives, politicians, and private security contractors.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Richard Vale.

Sheree recognized it immediately.

The federal prosecutor who had negotiated Gabriel’s cooperation agreement.

Her blood went cold.

Vale knew everything Gabriel had confessed.

Every witness.

Every account.

Every weakness.

Including her.

Sheree called Anthony.

No answer.

She called Matteo.

Nothing.

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Sheree approached quietly.

“Who is it?”

“Federal Marshal Service.”

Her heart stopped.

Gabriel had once told her something.

If something feels wrong, trust it.

Sheree backed away.

The door burst inward.

She ran.

A man grabbed her coat.

Sheree drove her elbow backward and escaped into the kitchen.

Another man blocked the fire escape.

She threw boiling coffee into his face.

He screamed.

Sheree ran into the hallway.

Mrs. Alvarez opened her door.

“Fire!” Sheree shouted.

The older woman immediately pulled the building alarm.

Sirens erupted.

Doors opened.

Residents flooded the hallway.

The attackers could no longer move unnoticed.

Sheree disappeared into the crowd.

Twenty minutes later, Anthony found her.

He was bleeding from the forehead.

“Vale hit three locations simultaneously.”

“Matteo?”

“Alive.”

“Gabriel?”

Anthony went silent.

Sheree’s stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Vale used an emergency federal transfer order.”

“Meaning?”

“Gabriel was removed from the prison two hours ago.”

“Where did they take him?”

“We don’t know.”

Sheree stared at him.

Four hundred and twenty-six days had suddenly become irrelevant.

Richard Vale had Gabriel.

May you like

And unlike Salvatore, Vale did not want evidence.

He wanted every person capable of exposing him dead.
