Chapter 1 - THE SILVER BRIEFCASE

The silver briefcase was already halfway toward the highway before Lily Harper fully understood what had happened.
“Sir—”
Her voice disappeared beneath the roar of passing trucks.
The black SUV had already turned onto the interstate, its taillights growing smaller with every second.
Lily looked down at the polished silver briefcase resting against her legs. It was heavier than she expected, cold from the rain, and secured by 2 steel combination locks.
She looked toward the cafe.
Then toward the empty highway.
Ray came out of the kitchen carrying a trash bag.
“What happened?”
“That customer. The one in the black suit. He forgot this.”
Ray’s eyes moved to the briefcase.
His expression changed immediately.
“Lily.”
“What?”
“Leave it.”
She frowned.
“He’ll come back.”
Ray slowly shook his head.
“I don’t think men like him come back.”
Lily looked again toward the highway.
“He might have important papers. He’ll send somebody.”
“What if it’s too late?”
Ray sighed.
“You don’t even know his name.”
Lily said nothing.
She untied her apron, grabbed the keys to her old car from the drawer beneath the register, and hurried toward the parking lot.
“Lily.”
She stopped beside her faded blue sedan.
“What?”
“If you leave now, you’ll lose half your tips tonight.”
Ray pointed toward the nearly empty cafe.
Lily looked down at the briefcase.
Then she said quietly, “I can earn tips tomorrow.”
Her car engine struggled twice before finally starting.
Rain covered the windshield as Lily pulled onto the highway.
40 minutes later, the world around her had changed.
Gas stations and truck stops gave way to tall office towers, luxury hotels, and streets that looked cleaner with every block.
Lily had never driven this far into the city.
At a red light, she looked at the cafe receipt lying beside the briefcase.
The customer had paid by card.
A name appeared on the receipt.
Damian Vale.
“At least now I know where to start.”
She searched the name on her old phone.
Hundreds of results appeared immediately.
Business magazines.
News interviews.
Photographs beside politicians.
Images of the same man standing in front of private helicopters.
One headline caught her attention.
Damian Vale, youngest CEO to build a billion-dollar shipping empire.
Another read:

Lily locked her phone.
“So, definitely rich.”
She laughed quietly.
“And I chased him 40 miles for a briefcase.”
The navigation app led her toward the tallest building downtown.
Vale International Headquarters.
The building looked more like a luxury hotel than an office.
Black marble.
Glass walls.
Security guards at the entrance.
Luxury cars lined the driveway.
Lily parked her old sedan at the far end of the visitor lot.
Compared with everything surrounding it, the little blue car looked as though it had wandered into the wrong movie.
She picked up the briefcase and approached the entrance.
A security guard stepped in front of her.
“Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for Damian Vale.”
“Do you have an appointment?”
“No.”
The guard waited.
“He forgot this.”
Lily lifted the briefcase.
Both guards looked at one another immediately.
One spoke into his earpiece.
The other turned back to Lily.
“Please wait here.”
2 minutes later, the glass doors opened.
A man in an expensive suit hurried outside.
He was not Damian.
He appeared to be in his 50s, professional and controlled.
But the instant he saw the briefcase, all color left his face.
“Miss.”
Lily looked at him.
“You know him?”
“I work for him.”
The man took a careful step closer.
“Where did you get that?”
“He left it in the cafe.”
“You drove here?”
“Yes.”
He stared at her.
“You drove 40 miles?”
“I didn’t think mailing it would be faster.”
For the first time, the man smiled genuinely.
“Please come inside.”
“I’m okay here.”
“Mr. Vale will want to thank you himself.”
“I still have to get back to work.”
The man hesitated.
“Just 1 minute.”
Before Lily could answer, the lobby doors opened again.
Everyone near the entrance straightened instantly.
Conversations stopped.
Employees moved aside.
Damian Vale crossed the lobby exactly as he had crossed the cafe earlier.
Calm.
Confident.
Completely unaware of why everyone was staring.
Then he saw the briefcase.
He stopped.
For the first time since Lily had met him, something unexpected crossed his face.
Not panic.
Not fear.
Relief.
He walked toward her.
“You came.”
Lily looked confused.
“You sound surprised.”
“I am.”
She held out the briefcase.
“You forgot it.”
Damian accepted it without looking away from her.
“I know what’s inside.”
“I assumed you did.”
“No.”
He looked at the silver case.
Then back at Lily.
“I meant I know what could have happened if somebody else found it.”
Lily smiled lightly.
“Good thing I found it first.”
Silence settled between them.
Employees pretended not to watch.
Every security guard was watching.
Finally, Damian spoke.
“You drove 40 miles.”
“You keep mentioning that.”
“You could have called.”
“I don’t have your number.”
“You could have left it with the police.”
“I didn’t know if that was safe.”
Another pause.
“Do you know what’s inside?”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“You never tried to open it?”
“It wasn’t mine.”
Damian held her gaze for several seconds.
Longer than necessary.
Long enough that Lily began to feel uncomfortable.
She finally glanced at her old watch.
“Well, I’m probably getting fired.”
Damian frowned.
“For returning my briefcase?”
“I left in the middle of dinner rush.”
For the first time, the cold businessman standing outside a billion-dollar headquarters laughed.
Only slightly.
Quietly.
Almost too softly to hear.
But everyone around them heard it.
No one could remember the last time Damian Vale had laughed.
Lily blinked.
“You actually smile.”
Damian looked at her.
“So I’ve been told.”
Before either of them could continue, a black luxury SUV screeched to a stop outside the building.
4 armed men stepped out.
One hurried toward Damian.
“Boss.”
His voice was urgent.
“We have a problem.”
Damian’s expression changed immediately.
The small trace of warmth vanished.
He looked once at Lily.
Then at the men waiting for him.
Without realizing it, Lily had walked into a world changing much faster than she understood.
Damian remained still.
The man from the SUV stopped inches away, breathing heavily despite trying to appear composed.
“Boss, they found out.”
Damian’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
“The Romano shipment. Someone leaked the route.”
Lily stood nearby holding the strap of her old handbag.
She understood none of it.
But whatever was happening was serious.
The man glanced at her.
“We should talk inside.”
Damian did not answer him immediately.
Instead, he looked at Lily.
“You should go.”
May you like
She nodded.
“I was planning to.”
