Chapter 5 - The Price of Silence

Vincent arrived at Bennett Textile shortly after midnight.

He had spent six hours trying to reach Claire.

She had ignored every call.

He had considered sending security teams to find her, then stopped himself.

The last thing he wanted was to make her feel hunted.

Instead, he drove alone.

Rain hammered the windshield as he parked outside the warehouse.

Daniel met him at the entrance.

"She doesn't want to see you."

Vincent looked exhausted.

"Tell her I came anyway."

"That's exactly what she's afraid of."

The words struck Vincent harder than an insult.

He looked toward the upper windows.

"Daniel, I know I hurt her."

"You humiliated her."

Vincent swallowed.

"Yes."

"And you let another woman wear your family crest."

"Yes."

Daniel studied him.

"Then why should I let you inside?"

Vincent looked down.

"Because I think Claire's father is alive, and someone is using him to threaten her."

Daniel's expression changed.

He stepped aside.

Claire was standing beside Margaret's desk when Vincent entered.

She wore black trousers and a gray sweater.

Her hair was tied back.

Her wedding ring was gone.

Vincent noticed immediately.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Claire said, "You knew my father."

Vincent closed his eyes.

"Yes."

"You knew he survived."

"Yes."

She nodded slowly.

"And you married me without telling me."

"Claire—"

"Don't."

He stopped.

She walked toward him.

"Did you know who I was when we met?"

Vincent looked at her.

"No."

"Tell me the truth."

"I didn't know until after we started dating."

"When?"

"Three months before I proposed."

Claire laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"You had three months to tell me before our wedding."

"I know."

"And six years afterward."

"I know."

"Why?"

Vincent looked toward the photograph on the desk.

"Because I was ashamed."

Claire stared at him.

"Of what?"

"My father."

He sat down heavily.

"Your father discovered that mine was laundering money through maritime insurance contracts. He tried to expose it. My father ordered his death."

Claire's face went white.

Vincent continued.

"I was seventeen. I overheard the plan. I warned Thomas and helped him escape the first attempt."

"Then why did everyone think he died?"

"Because the men hunting him wouldn't stop until they believed he was gone."

Claire's eyes filled.

"So you staged his death?"

"Thomas arranged it with help from people outside my family. I helped him reach a safe house."

"And afterward?"

"I lost contact with him."

"Did my grandmother know?"

"Eventually."

Claire shook her head.

"She hated you."

"She had every reason to."

Vincent looked at her.

"When I discovered you were Thomas's daughter, I went to Margaret. I told her everything."

Claire remembered her grandmother's coldness toward Vincent.

The warnings.

The arguments.

The long silences whenever his name came up.

"She still let me marry you."

"She told me that if I ever hurt you, she would make sure I regretted it."

Claire looked away.

"Apparently she was prepared."

Vincent leaned forward.

"Claire, the kiss—"

"Don't tell me it meant nothing."

He stopped.

"Because it meant something to me."

"I know."

"You put your hand around her waist."

"I know."

"You kissed her in front of the entire city."

His voice cracked.

"I know."

Claire's tears finally fell.

"I came there to tell you something wonderful."

Vincent stared at her.

"What?"

She almost reached for her handbag.

Almost showed him the photograph.

But something inside her resisted.

She was not ready to give him that joy.

Not while she was still trying to understand the man standing before her.

"Nothing you deserve to hear tonight."

Vincent looked wounded.

He accepted it.

Then Claire showed him the threatening photograph.

His expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get this?"

"Someone sent it."

"That's Thomas."

"Where is he?"

Vincent examined the background.

A white wall.

A window.

The ocean.

Then he noticed something.

A brass lamp.

He had seen that lamp before.

His father had owned a private coastal residence in Maine.

A house the family supposedly sold after his death.

Vincent looked up.

"I think I know where he is."

Claire's heart raced.

"Then we're going."

"No."

Her expression hardened.

"Don't tell me what I can do."

"Claire, whoever sent this photograph wants us to react."

"That's my father."

"And that's why we need a plan."

Rebecca entered with Daniel.

"We have another problem."

She placed a tablet on the desk.

News footage showed Elena standing outside Harbor Point.

Reporters surrounded her.

She looked pale and distressed.

"I have tried to protect the Moretti family," Elena told the cameras. "But I can no longer remain silent about financial misconduct involving Mrs. Claire Moretti."

Claire stared at the screen.

Elena continued.

"Documents indicate that Mrs. Moretti used inherited corporate entities to conceal hundreds of millions in unauthorized transactions."

Vincent stood.

"She's accusing Claire?"

Rebecca nodded grimly.

"She's trying to make the forged documents look legitimate by blaming the victim."

On the screen, Elena wiped away a tear.

Then she delivered the final blow.

"I also believe Mr. Moretti has been manipulated by his wife for years."

Claire watched Vincent's expression darken.

For the first time since arriving, he looked like the dangerous man Boston feared.

He reached for his phone.

Claire caught his wrist.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Claire—"

"No threats. No violence. No men disappearing."

"She's trying to destroy you."

"Then we'll destroy her lies."

Vincent stared at his wife.

And for the first time in years, he understood that protecting Claire did not mean making decisions for her.

It meant standing beside her while she made them herself.

He lowered the phone.

"Tell me what you need."

Claire looked at Rebecca.

"Can we release the real ownership records?"

"Yes. With careful legal review."

"Then prepare them."

Daniel's phone vibrated.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

"Claire."

She turned.

"What?"

"The Maine property."

Vincent stiffened.

Daniel swallowed.

"Security footage just surfaced."

He showed them a still image from a roadside camera.

A black SUV had entered the property two hours earlier.

In the passenger seat sat an older man.

Thomas Bennett.

And behind the wheel was someone Claire recognized instantly.

Elena Ward.
