Chapter 6 - Ethan Ward Was Never an Accident

Ethan read the message twice.
Olivia watched the blood leave his face.
“You know what this means.”
“No.”
“You recognized something.”
Ethan remained silent.
“Ethan.”
He walked toward the window.
“During my last deployment, my unit recovered a hard drive from a field hospital.”
Olivia waited.
“It contained financial records connecting a military contractor to stolen medical supplies. Equipment meant for wounded soldiers was being redirected and sold.”
“Who was the contractor?”
“Calder Defense.”
Olivia knew the name.
Calder Defense had collapsed six years earlier after a federal investigation.
“The founder went to prison.”
“Arthur Calder did.”
Ethan turned.
“But his son didn't.”
Olivia's stomach tightened.
“What was his son's name?”
“Julian.”
She knew that name too.
Julian Calder was chairman of Meridian Crest.
Suddenly everything connected.
Sentinel.
Meridian.
Ethan.
Her accident.
“This isn't only about my company.”
“No.”
“You testified.”
“Under seal.”
“But Calder discovered your identity.”
“Apparently.”
Detective Brooks uncovered more.
Julian Calder had spent years rebuilding his family's fortune through private investment companies.
Sentinel threatened him twice.
First, its security technology could expose hidden financial networks.
Second, Olivia's company possessed archived data inherited through an acquisition—data potentially connected to Calder Defense.
But Ethan represented something more dangerous.
A living witness.
Olivia's accident had not originally been designed to kill Ethan.
But once Ethan appeared in the emergency room and his face was captured on leaked footage, Calder's people realized where he was.
Pierce had leaked the recording deliberately.
The conspiracy had shifted.
Now Olivia and Ethan were both targets.
Federal agents entered the investigation.
Grace was moved temporarily to a protected location.
She hated it.
“Dad, I have school.”
“You'll do school here.”
“This place doesn't have my markers.”
“I'll buy markers.”
“My good markers are at home.”
Olivia crouched beside her.
“I'll get you every color ever invented.”
Grace considered this.
“Even glitter?”
“Especially glitter.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You're creating a monster.”
Grace smiled.
For Olivia, those moments became precious.
She had spent fifteen years believing success meant never needing anyone.
Now the most important people in her life were a stubborn former medic and an eight-year-old who put marshmallows in cereal.
But danger followed them.
Calder made his next move publicly.
Meridian Crest announced an aggressive takeover attempt of Hart Tech.
Victor called Olivia.
“He's buying board votes.”
“Let him.”
“Olivia, if he gets control—”
“He won't.”
She sounded like the CEO again.
Ethan heard it.
The woman who had begged for the pain to end was gone.
Or perhaps she had never truly been weak.
She had simply been afraid.
There was a difference.
Olivia returned to Hart Tech headquarters under federal protection.
Employees stopped as she crossed the lobby.
Some applauded.
She hated applause.
But this time she didn't stop them.
She entered the boardroom.
Julian Calder was already sitting there.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Smiling.
“Ms. Hart.”
“Mr. Calder.”
His gaze moved toward Ethan.
Recognition flickered.
“So that's him.”
Ethan said nothing.
Calder smiled.
“You were difficult to find.”
Olivia's expression hardened.
“You just admitted something remarkably stupid in a room full of lawyers.”
“I admitted nothing.”
The board meeting began.
Calder offered shareholders an enormous premium.
Several directors appeared tempted.
Then Olivia stood.
“Before anyone votes, you should see something.”
She activated the screen.
Financial records appeared.
Transfers.
Shell companies.
Payments to Malcolm Pierce.
Payments to Nathan Cole.
And one transfer authorized by Meridian Crest forty-eight hours before Olivia's brake lines were cut.
Calder's smile disappeared.
“You can't prove what that payment purchased.”
“Maybe not.”
Olivia looked toward Ethan.
“But he can prove what your family's money purchased eight years ago.”
Ethan placed an old military evidence drive on the table.
Calder stared at it.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Federal agents entered.
Calder rose suddenly.
Then every light in the building went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Someone screamed.
A gunshot followed.
Ethan reached for Olivia.
May you like
His hand found empty air.
When emergency lights flickered on thirty seconds later, Olivia Hart was gone.
