Chapter 6 - The Secret in Locker 317

Carmine survived.

Barely.

Gabriel left him under armed guard at a private clinic and drove directly to Union Station.

Audrey insisted on coming.

This time Gabriel allowed it.

Noah and Emma remained with Gabriel's most trusted female security officer, Lena Marconi, at a protected property.

Audrey hated leaving them.

Gabriel hated it more than he expected.

Locker 317 contained no money.

No weapons.

Only a manila envelope and an old phone.

Inside the envelope were DNA reports.

Gabriel read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression changed.

Audrey watched.

“What?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You knew.”

Her silence answered.

“Audrey.”

“I knew part of it.”

He handed her the document.

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.9998%.

Gabriel Russo was Noah and Emma's biological father.

Nothing surprising.

Then he showed her the next page.

The twins carried a rare mitochondrial marker linked to the Davis family.

Beneath it was another report.

ARTHUR DAVIS — PATERNITY EXCLUDED.

Gabriel frowned.

“Arthur wasn't your biological father.”

“No.”

“Who was?”

Audrey sat on the bench.

“Julian found out.”

Gabriel's face hardened.

“Tell me.”

“My mother had an affair before she married Arthur.”

“With whom?”

Audrey looked directly at him.

“Thomas Bell.”

Gabriel knew the name.

Everybody did.

Thomas Bell had been a federal prosecutor who spent fifteen years trying to destroy the Russo organization.

He disappeared twenty-six years earlier.

Presumed murdered.

Gabriel slowly understood.

“Vittorio killed him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas had evidence connecting Vittorio to trafficking, murders, judges, politicians—everything.”

“And you're his daughter.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked again at the documents.

“So the twins are Russo heirs…”

“And descendants of the man who built the original case against Vittorio.”

Gabriel almost admired the cruelty of the irony.

The children represented both sides of a buried war.

The old phone suddenly rang.

Both stared at it.

Gabriel answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice.

“Gabe.”

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Nobody called him that anymore.

Only one person ever had.

“Julian.”

Audrey covered her mouth.

Gabriel stood.

“Where are you?”

“Can't tell you.”

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I stood over your grave.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead for five years.”

“I had to.”

“No, you didn't.”

“Vittorio would have killed you too.”

Gabriel's anger shook loose.

“You don't get to decide what I can survive.”

“No. But I got to decide whether my brother survived at all.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“Where is Father?”

“Closer than you think.”

“What does he want?”

“The twins.”

“Why?”

“Thomas Bell hid evidence before he died. Vittorio never found it.”

“What does that have to do with Audrey?”

“Bell created a trust.”

Gabriel looked at her.

She shook her head.

She did not know.

Julian continued.

“The trust controls ownership interests in three port companies Vittorio secretly transferred decades ago to keep them beyond federal seizure.”

Gabriel understood.

“Audrey inherited them.”

“Yes.”

“And because we're legally married…”

Silence.

Gabriel's eyes moved to Audrey.

Julian said, “If Audrey dies while legally married to you, depending on which trust documents control, her interest may pass through the twins.”

“And Vittorio thinks he can control them.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel's voice went cold.

“He won't.”

“You need to disappear.”

“I don't run.”

“You have children now.”

Gabriel looked through the station windows.

Audrey stood ten feet away.

For the first time, his choices were not his alone.

Julian spoke again.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“The night you married Audrey wasn't an accident.”

Gabriel's brow tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“Her father's debt. The missing money. Your father sending you personally.”

A pause.

“Vittorio arranged all of it.”

Gabriel stared at Audrey.

“Why?”

May you like

“Because he wanted you to marry Thomas Bell's daughter.”

The call ended.
