Chapter 6

At 11:15 a.m., I called Arthur from Maya's motel room.

"Arthur, freeze the operating treasury! Now!"

"I can't, Clara," Arthur’s voice came back taut, stripped of its usual calm. "Julian just walked into the downtown headquarters with your corporate token and a signed power of attorney."

"A power of attorney?! I never signed one!"

"He presented a pre-nuptial execution clause dated yesterday afternoon. Your signature is on the notarized line, Clara. The notary was registered through his personal firm."

A forged signature. The paperwork had been filed amidst the avalanche of vendor contracts and venue clearances I had blindly signed during the wedding madness.

"How much is in that account, Arthur?"

"Forty-two million dollars. The entire Q4 payroll and international logistics reserve. If that money moves to an unverified overseas depository, Thorne Logistics will breach its bank covenants by midnight. The company will go into involuntary receivership."

I looked at Maya. She was watching me, her expression shifting from heartbreak to raw, burning fury.

"Where is he doing the transfer from?" I asked Arthur.

"The executive boardroom on the fortieth floor. He told security you were resting after the wedding and had delegated the quarterly balancing to him. The board is gathering for an emergency confirmation call right now."

"Tell them to wait," I snapped. "I’m thirty minutes away."

"Clara, you can't just storm in there with accusations," Arthur said. "He has legal documentation. If you cause a scene without proof of fraud, the board will panic, and the stock will crash anyway."

"I have proof," Maya interjected, stepping up beside me. She grabbed her laptop and a battered external drive. "I have the original safety log with Julian's handwritten alterations, and I have the offshore transaction trails. He didn't just forge your name, Clara. He used my brother's forged signature on the 2019 non-disclosure agreement."

"Leo was already in a coma when that NDA was executed," Maya added, her voice trembling with cold rage. "Julian forged a dying man’s signature."

I looked at her. Two women, entirely different lives, connected by a thread of toxic betrayal spun by the same man.

"Get your coat, Maya," I said. "We’re going to crash a board meeting."
