Chapter 8 - THE SAFE ROOM

Water poured into the lower deck.

The yacht tilted sharply.

People screamed.

Emergency lights flashed.

My father grabbed my arm.

“Upstairs!”

We moved.

Daniel and Lena helped the injured crew.

Fiona stayed behind.

“Where's Aidan?” I asked.

Daniel looked toward the lower deck.

“Still inside.”

“And Victor?”

“Unknown.”

My heart pounded.

We reached the main salon.

Water had already begun creeping beneath the doors.

My mother grabbed my face.

“You're alive.”

“So are you.”

She pulled me into her arms.

For the first time that night, I cried.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I had almost lost her.

My father looked at me.

“You found the documents?”

“Yes.”

“Then we're not finished.”

“What documents?”

“The ones that prove where the money went.”

I stared.

“What money?”

He looked at the black drive.

“The missing funds from Victor's company.”

I opened it.

Files appeared.

Bank transfers.

Contracts.

Emails.

Names.

Then I saw something unexpected.

Aidan Sterling.

My father stared.

“Aidan was involved?”

“Apparently.”

The files showed that Aidan had been secretly moving money from Victor's old company years ago.

Victor hadn't destroyed himself.

Aidan had helped.

He had manipulated Victor.

He had then blamed my father.

The entire revenge story had been built on a lie.

Victor had spent twenty years hunting the wrong enemy.

I looked toward Fiona.

“Does she know?”

“She may not.”

Then Fiona entered.

She was holding a photograph.

“My son was ten when Victor disappeared.”

She stared at it.

“Flynn grew up believing your father destroyed his father.”

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you tell him?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Aidan?”

She nodded.

“He threatened me.”

I understood.

Fiona had been trapped too.

Not innocent.

But trapped.

Then the yacht shook again.

Aidan appeared at the doorway.

His clothes were soaked.

His face was furious.

“You.”

He pointed at me.

“You ruined everything.”

Daniel stepped in front of me.

Aidan laughed.

“You think you're safe?”

Then Victor appeared behind him.

“Aidan.”

Aidan turned.

Victor's face was cold.

“You stole from me.”

Aidan stared.

Victor continued.

“You used my anger.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated my son.”

Aidan smiled.

“Yes.”

Victor raised his weapon.

My father stepped forward.

“Victor.”

He stopped.

“Don't become the monster he told you I was.”

Victor's hand lowered.

Aidan looked confused.

Then coast guard lights appeared in the distance.

Aidan turned.

He ran.

Daniel chased him.

The next minutes were chaos.

But eventually, Aidan was captured.

Victor surrendered.

Fiona sat quietly beside the wall.

Flynn stood alone.

When the authorities boarded, he immediately raised his hands.

“I'll cooperate.”

I looked at him.

He looked back.

There was no excuse in his expression.

Only regret.

As officers led him away, he stopped.

“Olivia.”

I said nothing.

“I loved you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

Then he was gone.

The yacht was evacuated before dawn.

We reached a rescue vessel.

Wrapped in blankets, I stood on the deck and watched the yacht disappear behind us.

My father came beside me.

“You saved yourself.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked toward Lena and Daniel.

“They helped.”

My father smiled.

“You trusted people.”

“I had to.”

He placed his hand on my shoulder.

“That's what your mother and I always wanted for you.”

“What?”

“To understand that trust isn't weakness.”

The sunrise appeared over the ocean.

For the first time in days, I felt safe.

But I knew the story wasn't over.

There would be trials.

Investigations.

Financial battles.

Headlines.

And questions.

Lots of questions.

Yet when I looked at the horizon, I realized something.

May you like

Flynn had tried to make the ocean my grave.

Instead, it had become the place where I finally learned to save myself.
