Chapter 8 - THE TRAP AT THE CHARITY GALA

Adrian's legal team moved quickly.
Within forty-eight hours, newspapers published stories describing me as a violent, unstable man who had kidnapped his own child. Anonymous sources claimed Evelyn had suffered a breakdown and that I was using her disappearance to seize control of Adrian's company.
The lies were everywhere.
For the first time, I understood how Adrian had maintained his power for so long.
He didn't need everyone to believe him.
He only needed enough people to doubt the truth.
Thomas secured a temporary protection order for Lily, but the custody hearing was scheduled for the following week. Until then, we had to keep her safe.
Evelyn was discharged from the hospital under strict medical supervision.
When she returned to the house, Lily ran toward her with a delighted cry.
“Mama!”
Evelyn fell to her knees and wrapped her arms around our daughter.
I stood in the doorway, unable to speak.
For months, they had been separated by fear, lies, and a man who believed he could purchase the right to control other people's lives.
Now they were together.
That night, Evelyn sat beside me on the balcony.
“I want to testify,” she said.
“You're not ready.”
“I've been ready since the night he took me.”
I looked at her.
“He'll try to destroy you.”
“He already tried.”
She took my hand.
“Daniel, if we let him control what happens next, he'll spend the rest of his life hurting people. I won't let that happen.”
I knew she was right.
The prosecutor proposed a plan. Adrian would be attending the annual Vale Foundation charity gala, an event he used to cultivate political connections and present himself as a philanthropist.
The investigation had uncovered evidence that several original contracts and account ledgers were stored in a private office at the gala venue. A former employee had agreed to help authorities access them.
If we could secure those records and expose Adrian's financial network, the prosecution would have enough evidence to bring the entire organization down.
Evelyn insisted on attending.
She wore a simple black evening dress and the silver moon bracelet I had recovered from the abandoned hospital. Her hands trembled as I fastened the clasp.
“You don't have to do this,” I whispered.
She looked up at me.
“Yes, I do.”
I kissed her forehead.
“Then we do it together.”
The ballroom was filled with politicians, business executives, and wealthy donors. Cameras flashed as Adrian stepped onto the stage, smiling beneath a chandelier worth more than most people's homes.
He spoke about compassion, integrity, and protecting vulnerable families.
I nearly laughed.
Then the lights dimmed.
A large screen illuminated behind him.
The first image showed a series of bank transfers.
The second showed forged property documents.
The third showed a recording of Adrian ordering his men to remove Evelyn from the rehabilitation center.
The ballroom fell silent.
Adrian stopped speaking.
On the screen, his own voice echoed through the room.
“Keep her alive until she tells us where the originals are. If she refuses, use the child.”
A woman screamed.
The audience erupted.
Adrian turned toward the control booth.
“Shut it off!”
But the recording continued.
Then Evelyn stepped onto the stage.
Every camera turned toward her.
Adrian looked as if he had seen a ghost.
“Evelyn,” he whispered.
She took the microphone.
“My name is Evelyn Hayes. Three weeks ago, this man told my husband that I was dead. He forged medical records, kidnapped me, and used my daughter as leverage to conceal financial crimes.”
Adrian lunged toward her.
Security officers intercepted him.
He struggled, shouting that the recordings were fabricated.
Then Brooke stepped forward from the audience.
“I have the original messages,” she said. “And the account records.”
Michael followed her.
“So do I.”
Adrian's face twisted with fury.
“You ungrateful little—”
Police officers rushed onto the stage.
“Adrian Vale, you're under arrest.”
He was handcuffed in front of hundreds of witnesses.
For one glorious moment, I thought it was over.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
My mother entered, accompanied by two attorneys.
She held up a document.
“Stop this arrest!” she shouted. “I have evidence that Daniel Hayes orchestrated the entire operation to seize Adrian's assets.”
The officers hesitated.
Eleanor looked directly at me.
And I realized she had brought one final weapon.
A document bearing my signature.
May you like
A document that appeared to prove I had ordered the kidnapping of my own wife.
