Chapter 6 - The Broken Lock and the Midnight Raid

Desperate people do stupid, illegal things when they realize they have no legal defense.

On Saturday night, around 11:30 PM, my phone pinged with a silent security alert.

When I legally took title to Unit 4B years ago, I had installed an enterprise-grade smart lock and a discreet doorbell camera disguised as a brass peephole, registered exclusively to my private administrator account. My parents had lived there so complacently they never bothered to inspect the hardware.

I tapped the live video feed.

The hallway of 1442 Elm Ridge Way was dimly lit. Standing in front of the door was Arthur, holding a crowbar, alongside Karla’s burly boyfriend, Derek, carrying a commercial drill and a set of heavy steel lockboxes.

“Just drill out the whole cylinder!” Karla’s voice hissed from just outside the camera’s frame. “If we change the deadbolt and install our own smart lock, she can’t prove she has access! The police will call it a civil lockout dispute and won't get involved! My lawyer friend told me possession is nine-tenths of the law!”

“Hurry up, Derek,” Arthur grunted, looking nervously over his shoulder down the elevator shaft. “My nitroglycerin pills are inside. Just get the door open.”

They weren't trying to lock me out; they were trying to alter the locks to stage a break-in and remove the internal safe where the historical financial paper trail was kept.

I didn't panic. I hit two buttons on my phone.

The first was the building’s superintendent, Mr. Henderson, who had managed Elm Ridge Way for twenty years and had received a copy of my certified title deed and a five-hundred-dollar retainer forty-eight hours earlier.

The second was the emergency dispatcher at the Second Precinct.

“Second Precinct, what’s your emergency?”

“This is Laura Vance. I am the sole deeded property owner of 1442 Elm Ridge Way, Unit 4B. I am currently watching a live surveillance feed of three individuals attempting to force entry and destroy the locking mechanisms with a crowbar and power drill. One of the suspects is Arthur Vance, who was formally served with an eviction notice two days ago. They are armed with industrial tools.”

“Units are rolling, ma’am. Stay off the premises.”

Through the camera feed, I watched Derek lean his weight into the drill. The bit screamed as it bit into the hardened alloy deadbolt.

Suddenly, the stairwell fire door swung open with a resounding bang.

Two uniformed police officers, tasers drawn, stepped into the hallway, followed immediately by Mr. Henderson holding his master ring of keys.

“Step away from the door! Drop the tools! Hands where we can see them!” the lead officer barked.

Derek instantly dropped the drill onto the carpet, raising his hands above his head. “Whoa, whoa! Relax! This is my girlfriend’s parents' place!”

Arthur froze, the crowbar slipping from his fingers and clattering against the baseboard. “Officers, you have this all wrong! I live here! I am the resident!”

“Mr. Vance?” the second officer said, pulling a laminated dispatch sheet from his breast pocket. “You were formally served with a civil eviction order on Thursday. The deeded owner, Laura Vance, has filed an active property protection order and provided real-time surveillance footage of you attempting to destroy property boundaries. Step against the wall. Right now.”

Eleanor came rushing out of the elevator holding two empty luggage bags, screaming hysterically. “What are you doing to my husband?! He has a heart condition! Arrest her! Arrest Laura!”

“Ma’am, step back or you will be arrested for obstruction!” the officer ordered, grabbing Arthur’s arm and clicking cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

From fifty blocks away, sitting peacefully in my small room while Sophia slept softly under a wool blanket, I watched my father being patted down, read his Miranda rights, and marched toward the elevators in handcuffs.

They had wanted a fight without rules. They had forgotten that the law only protects those who honor it.
