Chapter 9 - The Fall of Beatrice Vance

The living room descended into a suffocating, lethal silence. Dad kept his weapon trained on Julian, but Croft’s men had their sights locked directly on Dad’s chest and mine.
"You're out of your jurisdiction, Delgado," Croft said smoothly, stepping into the room. "The LAPD units are currently staging at the front entrance of the hotel. In two minutes, sixty uniforms will flood this bungalow. And guess what the official narrative is? A distraught, armed grandfather and an unstable mother held high-profile executives hostage. Any shots fired will be ruled justifiable defense of a minor."
Ryan scrambled to his feet behind Croft, a sickening grin returning to his face. "Give me the cooler, Mariana. Give me the documents. It’s over. You lost."
I stood my ground, clutching the heavy documents against my chest. "You really think you're getting out of this, Beatrice?" I called out toward the open entryway.
A shadow moved along the hallway. Beatrice Vance stepped into the bungalow. She was dressed in an impeccable cream silk pantsuit, her pearls gleaming, her silver hair arranged with flawless elegance. But under the bright chandelier, her skin had a waxy, grayish tint—the undeniable telltale mark of advanced cellular decay.
"You should have drunk the tea, Mariana," Beatrice said softly, her voice carrying that condescending, matriarchal purr I had endured for years. "It would have spared you so much unnecessary pain. A mother should know when to submit for the greater good of the family."
"The greater good of your ego, you mean," I retorted. "You're dying, Beatrice. And you were willing to butcher your only grandchild to buy yourself a few more months of breathing."
"I built this dynasty!" Beatrice hissed, her aristocratic composure slipping, revealing the snarling, desperate monster beneath. "Ryan’s grandfather carved this empire from nothing! Everything you have—this lifestyle, this security—exists because of Vance blood! Leo is a Vance! His life belongs to this family! If five percent of his marrow extends my life long enough to secure the succession, that is not cruelty—it is his sacred duty!"
"He is a human being!" I roared. "He is not your spare parts inventory!"
"Enough," Beatrice snapped, turning to Croft. "Take the child's samples. Take the files. If the father resists, neutralize him. The police will clean up the mess."
Croft raised his tactical shotgun, taking aim at Dad. "You heard the lady. Drop the weapon, old man."
Dad didn't move. In fact, he smiled.
"You always were sloppy with your perimeter sweeps, Croft," Dad said calmly.
A sudden, ear-shattering crack of breaking glass erupted from the bungalow’s skylight.
BANG! FLASH! BANG!
Two military-grade flashbang stun grenades plummeted through the ceiling, detonating directly above Croft’s security team with a blinding magnesium flare and a deafening, disorienting 170-decibel concussion.
Croft and his men stumbled backward, screaming in agony, clutching their ears and eyes as white smoke flooded the living room.
Through the shattered patio doors and the fractured skylight, heavily armed tactical operators dressed in olive-drab body armor and helmets swarmed the bungalow.
"FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! NOBODY MOVE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
Croft tried to raise his shotgun through the smoke, but a federal operator tackled him with bone-crushing force, slamming him face-first into the hardwood floor and wrenching the weapon from his grip. The remaining private guards threw their hands up, dropping to their knees in terror.
Special Agent Miller—the agent Victor had warned us might be compromised—didn't lead the raid. Leading the team was Assistant Director Kathryn Vance-Ross, the head of the Department of Justice’s Special Financial Crimes Division and Julian Vance’s estranged sister, whom Beatrice had spent twenty years trying to silence.
"Beatrice Vance," Kathryn said, stepping through the clearing smoke, flashing a golden federal badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit biological human trafficking, corporate wire fraud, and attempted murder of a minor."
Beatrice stood paralyzed, her pearl necklace trembling against her throat. "Kathryn...? This is family business! You have no authority here!"
"The wire transfer of $1.7 million crossed international borders through an illegal offshore biomedical intermediary, Beatrice," Kathryn replied coldly, as two federal agents stepped forward and locked heavy steel cuffs around Beatrice’s frail, manicured wrists. "That gives the federal government full jurisdiction. We’ve had a wiretap on Julian’s Swiss accounts for six months. We were just waiting for the physical wet-ink documentation of the illegal harvest."
Kathryn turned to me. "Do you have the documents, Mariana?"
I stepped forward, handing over the thick leather binder containing the original trust charters, the wire confirmation receipts, and Ryan’s handwritten agreements. "Everything is in here. Including the signed authorization from my husband."
Ryan backed against the far wall, hyperventilating, his eyes darting frantically toward the windows. "Kathryn! Listen to me! I'm your nephew! I was coerced! Mother forced me into this! She threatened to cut me off! Mariana, tell them! Tell them I was trying to protect Leo!"
Two federal agents grabbed Ryan by both arms, twisting them behind his back and forcing him down onto his knees beside the shattered scotch glass. The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.

I walked over, standing directly over the man I had once thought was my protector.
"You told me Leo’s birthday was going to be unforgettable, Ryan," I whispered, looking into his tear-stained, ruined face. "You were right."
