Chapter 6 - My Best Friend’s Confession

I let Rachel inside because curiosity was stronger than hatred.
She sat where Michael had slept.
That felt strangely offensive.
“Talk.”
Rachel stared at her hands.
She and Daniel had been involved for seven months.
Seven.
Not weeks.
Months.
Their affair had started while Daniel and I were undergoing fertility testing.
That detail nearly broke me.
Rachel had known every appointment.
She had brought wine after one failed procedure.
She had hugged me while sleeping with my husband.
“Why?”
It was the smallest question and somehow the hardest.
Rachel cried.
“I was jealous of you.”
I laughed.
“Of me?”
“You always had a direction. Your career. Your parents. Daniel adored you.”
“Clearly.”
“I thought Michael cared more about work than me. Then Daniel started listening.”
“Daniel listens when he wants something.”
“I know that now.”
She handed me the flash drive.
It contained emails, account records, and messages Daniel had ordered her to delete.
She hadn't.
“Why give me this?”
“Because he plans to blame you.”
My blood went cold.
Daniel had apparently built the trust in my name as insurance.
If authorities found the missing money, he intended to argue that I had masterminded the transfer through information he supplied from work.
Rachel had finally understood what he was doing when she saw draft correspondence on his laptop.
“So you came back.”
“Yes.”
“To save me?”
Her eyes filled.
“To save myself too.”
At least she was honest.
I took the drive.
“I'll give it to my lawyer.”
“Claire…”
“No.”
She stopped.
“You don't get forgiveness because you finally did one decent thing.”
“I know.”
“I told you about losing my baby.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“I know.”
“You held me.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“And then you slept with him.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to say that like it makes anything better.”
“It doesn't.”
I opened the door.
Rachel stood.
Before leaving, she turned.
“I loved you.”
That hurt more than if she had said she hated me.
“I loved you too.”
Then I closed the door.
The flash drive changed the investigation.
Daniel had documented almost everything.
He had discovered Grant's sloppy financial controls and used them to disguise unauthorized transfers. Grant wasn't entirely innocent—he had approved arrangements he should have questioned—but he wasn't the mastermind.
Daniel was.
Investigators froze the trust.
My name began to clear.
Michael's company survived.
But Daniel disappeared.
Again.
For twelve days, nobody knew where he was.
During those twelve days, Michael and I stopped pretending.
Not officially.
We simply stopped discussing rules.
He came with me when Dad started cardiac rehabilitation.
I attended Michael's meeting with his company's board when he was temporarily appointed CEO after Grant stepped aside.
Michael accepted the promotion Rachel had once convinced him to reject.
I accepted mine.
We were rebuilding parallel lives.
And somewhere between hospital cafeteria coffee and late-night takeout, revenge became irrelevant.
Then came the Morgan Foundation gala.
Michael needed to attend.
I agreed to accompany him.
When I stepped from the car in a champagne satin gown, Michael stared.
“What?”
“I forgot my sentence.”
I laughed.
“CEO-level communication skills.”
“Apparently not.”
He offered his hand.
We entered together.
Halfway across the lobby, Michael stopped.
I followed his gaze.
Daniel was standing near the elevators.
Rachel stood beside him.
My stomach dropped.
Michael moved slightly in front of me.
I touched his arm.
“No.”
He looked down.
“I don't need a shield.”
Understanding crossed his face.
He stepped beside me instead.
Daniel approached.
He looked thinner.
Desperate.
Rachel stayed behind him.
“Claire.”
“You shouldn't be here.”
“I came to fix this.”
Michael's voice was cold.
“Your attorney should have advised you differently.”
Daniel ignored him.
“I can explain everything.”
“You've explained enough.”
Daniel looked at our joined hands.
“So this is real now?”
Neither of us answered.
His eyes filled with something ugly.
“You think he's better than me?”
I didn't answer that either.
This wasn't about ranking men.
It was about what I wanted my life to become.
“I think I'm better without the version of myself I became with you.”
That silenced him.
Rachel approached.
“Daniel, let's go.”
He spun toward her.
“You did this.”
Rachel flinched.
Michael stepped forward.
Security started moving.
Then Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You all think I'm the villain.”
He reached inside his jacket.
Michael moved instantly.
He pulled me behind him.
Security rushed forward.
But Daniel wasn't holding a weapon.
He held an envelope.
He threw it onto the floor.
“Ask your precious Michael what happens when the board learns he knew about the financial irregularities before the transfer.”
Michael froze.
My heart sank.
Daniel smiled.
For the first time that night, he looked confident.
May you like
Then he said:
“He didn't tell you everything, Claire.”
