Chapter 8

The heavy iron gates of St. Jude Recovery Institute rose out of the dense pine forest like the entrance to a gothic fortress. Rain lashed against the windshield of Owen’s truck as we idled behind two unmarked black patrol cruisers on the gravel shoulder.

Marcus Vance stepped out of the lead cruiser, a towering man with broad shoulders, iron-gray hair, and the piercing gaze of a career lawman. He walked over to our truck, tapping on my window.

I rolled it down, the damp mountain air rushing in.

"Emily," Marcus said, his eyes scanning my pale face and the swell of my pregnancy. "You’re sure about this? If we breach this facility without a verified federal warrant and Julian isn't inside, Pendelton will file obstruction charges against my troopers before sunrise."

I handed him the tablet Owen had connected to the downloaded server logs.

"Look at transfer entry 409, Marcus," I said. "A monthly wire of twenty-five thousand dollars from Montclair Capital directly to St. Jude’s private administrator, marked as 'Special Patient Care: Subject J.V.' Signed by Dr. Harrison and notarized by Arthur Pendelton."

Marcus zoomed in on the document. His jaw clenched so tight the muscles rippled along his neck.

"Julian," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "My brother’s boy. Damon told our entire family Julian drove off a cliff in the Alps."

He turned on his heel and barked toward the cruisers: "Breach the gate. Emergency wellness check under state felony statutes. Go!"

The cruisers engaged their emergency lights, their sirens screaming into the night as the lead vehicle rammed through the electronic security arm of the gate.

We followed close behind up the winding asphalt driveway to the main sanitarium building—a sterile, concrete structure surrounded by high chain-link fencing.

Within minutes, state troopers had secured the lobby. The night administrator, a trembling man in a white lab coat, was backed against the front desk with his hands raised, staring down the barrel of Marcus Vance’s badge.

"Sub-level two," Marcus ordered, grabbing the administrator by the collar. "Lead the way, or you’re spending the night in county holding for human trafficking."

Owen and I followed Marcus down the dimly lit concrete stairs into the subterranean ward. The smell was horrifying—industrial bleach, stale sweat, and damp concrete.

At the end of the hall, behind a reinforced steel door with a narrow observation window, sat a solitary figure on a narrow cot.

The door was unlocked with a heavy click.

The man on the cot looked up. He was gaunt, his cheeks sunken, his hair prematurely gray and overgrown. But the bone structure, the sharp nose, the piercing blue eyes—he was unmistakable.

Julian Vance.

"Marcus?" Julian croaked, squinting against the harsh corridor light. His voice was cracked, like leather left out in the sun. "Is... is that you?"

Marcus rushed into the cell, dropping to his knees and wrapping his arms around his nephew. "I’ve got you, son. I’ve got you. It’s over."

Julian wept openly against his uncle’s chest. Then, his sunken eyes drifted over Marcus’s shoulder and locked onto me.

"Emily," Julian whispered, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me. "Emily... Damon... did Damon hurt you?"

"Not yet, Julian," I said, stepping into the room, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "And he never will again."

Julian gripped my sleeve, his knuckles white. "You have to stop him tomorrow. The Bell Harbor Summit. He isn't just speaking at the conference, Emily. He’s closing the sovereign wealth fund deal. Once the Dubai consortium wires the hundred million dollars into Montclair Capital tomorrow at noon, Damon and Pendelton are boarding a private charter to an extradition-free territory. They’re leaving you with the debt, the fraud charges, and the blame for everything!"

Owen checked his watch.

It was 4:30 AM.

The Pacific Rim Real Estate Summit started in exactly five and a half hours.

"Owen," I said, turning to him, my voice completely devoid of hesitation. "Call the state attorney general’s office. Marcus, get Julian to a secure hospital and draft the emergency felony affidavits. Claire is waiting at the penthouse."

"What are you going to do, Emily?" Owen asked, his eyes filled with concern. "You haven't slept in twenty-four hours. Your body can't take much more of this."

I looked down at the ultrasound picture tucked securely inside my coat pocket, right over my beating heart.

May you like

"I’m going home to get dressed," I said. "I have a keynote speech to attend."
