Chapter 1

My husband let his mistress hold my eight-week-old daughter in my nursery while she wore the ivory silk dress I had bought for my own newborn portraits. Two minutes after the photographer sent me the gallery, I knew my marriage was over, but Landon still had no idea those files had reached me. And the photographs were not even the worst thing hiding inside that gallery.
My name is Greer Maddox, and the day Landon underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.
The third photograph was the one that stopped me.
Harper Quinn was sitting in my nursery with my baby against her chest.
My mother-in-law stood behind her with one hand on Harper’s shoulder.
Landon was kneeling beside them.
His palm rested on Harper’s knee.
They looked like a family.
Not accidental.
Not uncomfortable.
Rehearsed.
That morning, Landon had kissed my forehead and promised he would cancel the newborn session.
“You focus on getting better,” he told me.
“I’ll take care of everything here.”
I believed him.
While they were posing with my daughter, I was at St. Catherine’s Medical Center being treated for an infection caused by tissue left behind after June’s delivery.
He sent his sick wife to the hospital alone.
Then he placed another woman in her dress.
In her nursery.
With her baby.
I did not scream.
I did not call him.
June was asleep against my chest while I stared at the screen, unaware that someone had already tried to rewrite the story of who her mother was.
So I adjusted the blanket around her feet.
Then I downloaded every file.
There were one hundred and eighty-six photographs.
Harper beside the crib.
Harper kissing June’s forehead.
Harper standing by the window while Landon wrapped an arm around her waist.
Then I saw the pearl earrings.
My pearl earrings.
The ones my mother had given me on my wedding day.
In another photograph, my mother-in-law was fastening one through Harper’s ear.
That was when the humiliation turned cold.
Someone had opened my closet.
Someone had entered my bedroom.
Someone had selected my dress, touched my jewelry, and carried pieces of my life into the nursery like props.
And none of them looked ashamed.
I kept scrolling.
At the bottom of the gallery was a folder labeled DOCUMENTS.
Inside were the invoice, the model release, a questionnaire, and a scanned page titled SESSION PARTICIPANTS.
The booking form listed me as the client.
Greer Maddox.
My email.
My payment.
Then I saw a handwritten amendment.
“Mother unavailable due to ongoing medical instability.”
Beside it were the initials L.M.
Landon Maddox.
My husband had not simply replaced me in the photographs.
He had written an explanation for why I was missing.
Then I scrolled lower.
Harper’s name appeared beneath another heading.
ADDITIONAL MATERNAL FIGURE.
Her relationship to my daughter had been entered as:
“Future stepmother and primary caregiver.”
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
June breathed softly against me.
The affair hurt.
Those words were something else.
They sounded planned.
I called the photographer.
“Tessa, I need every original file preserved exactly as it is.”
Her voice changed immediately.
“Landon said you approved the change in participants.”
“I did not.”
Silence.
Then she said, “Greer, there are messages in the client portal that you may need to see.”
I looked down at my daughter.
May you like
And for the first time, I understood that the photographs might only be the beginning.
