Chapter 8 - The Price of Betrayal

Graham watched the recording without speaking.
Vanessa sat across from Richard Cole in a private office.
The timestamp showed two weeks before Owen's birth.
Richard poured himself a drink.
"Once the child is born, the Mercer woman becomes unnecessary."
Vanessa crossed her legs.
"Graham won't hurt her."
Richard smiled.
"He won't have to."
Graham felt his hands turn cold.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"What about the baby?"
Richard shrugged.
"Accidents happen."
The recording continued.
Vanessa's voice grew sharper.
"I don't want a scandal. I want Graham."
Richard looked at her.
"Then make sure he has nothing left tying him to Elena."
Graham paused the video.
For several seconds, he couldn't move.
He had spent years accusing Elena of manipulation.
Meanwhile, the woman he'd defended had been plotting against his wife and unborn son.
His security chief stood silently beside him.
Finally, Graham asked, "Where is Vanessa?"
"We're tracking her."
"Find her."
His voice was quiet.
Deadly.
"And contact the federal investigators handling Richard Cole."
The security chief blinked.
"Federal investigators, sir?"
Graham looked at the screen.
"This isn't family business anymore."
At my father's house, Owen was developing a habit of smiling in his sleep.
I loved those tiny smiles.
They arrived without warning, softening his entire face.
I would sit beside his crib and watch him breathe, amazed that someone so small could make the world feel worth surviving.
But peace didn't last.
At three that afternoon, Rebecca called.
"Elena, we need to move you and Owen."
My heart stopped.
"Why?"
"Agent Bennett received credible information that Richard Cole has identified your location."
I stood.
"How?"
"We don't know yet."
I looked toward the front window.
A delivery truck was parked across the street.
It had been there for twenty minutes.
"Rebecca..."
"What?"
"There's a truck outside."
"Don't approach it."
I backed away.
"Where's Dad?"
"At the factory."
"Call him."
"I already have."
Rebecca's voice became firm.
"Elena, take Owen into the interior hallway. Stay away from windows. Agents are on their way."
I lifted my son from his crib.
He stirred.
Then settled against my chest.
I held him tightly.
Outside, a car door slammed.
Footsteps approached the house.
Someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Then a man's voice.
"Delivery for Elena Mercer."
I didn't answer.
The knocking came again.
"Ma'am?"
I stepped backward.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
Your mother begged us to spare you.
My knees nearly gave way.
A second message followed.
Don't make us regret it.
Then the front door handle began turning.
The agents arrived before anyone entered.
The supposed delivery driver fled through the backyard.
He was arrested two blocks away.
Inside his truck, investigators found false identification, restraints, and a photograph of me holding Owen.
I stared at the photograph.
It had been taken through the nursery window.
Someone had been watching my baby.
Agent Bennett stood beside me.
"You're coming with us."
I nodded.
"Where?"
"A secure location."
My father arrived just as we were leaving.
His face was white.
"Elena!"
"I'm okay."
He rushed toward Owen.
"Is he hurt?"
"No."
My father closed his eyes.
Then he looked at Agent Bennett.
"This is my fault."
I turned.
"Dad?"
He swallowed.
"Richard Cole warned me years ago that if I ever reopened the investigation, he'd come for my family."
Agent Bennett studied him.
"Mr. Mercer, we need a complete statement."
My father nodded.
"I'll give you everything."
That evening, Graham arrived at the federal field office.
Agent Bennett met him in a conference room.
She looked unimpressed.
"Mr. Ashford."
"Agent."
"I understand you have information."
Graham placed a tablet on the table.
"Recordings. Financial records. Names of people who worked for Richard Cole."
She didn't touch it.
"And why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
Her eyebrows rose.
Graham continued.
"But you can verify the evidence."
She studied him.
"What's your interest in this investigation?"
Graham looked down.
"My wife and son are being targeted."
"Your former wife?"
The words landed harder than he expected.
"Yes."
Agent Bennett leaned forward.
"Mr. Ashford, your personal regrets are not my concern."
"I understand."
"Good."
She opened the tablet.
"Then let's discuss what you know."
At the secure house, I finally managed to put Owen to sleep.
Rebecca sat beside me in the living room.
"You're safe here," she said.
I nodded.
But my hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"Rebecca?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think my mother is alive?"
She hesitated.
"I think the evidence leaves that possibility open."
I looked at Owen.
"What if she spent seventeen years waiting for someone to find her?"
Rebecca reached for my hand.
Before she could answer, Agent Bennett called.
Her voice was unusually tense.
"Elena, we've identified a woman who may be connected to your mother's disappearance."
My breath caught.
"Who?"
"She was admitted to a private long-term care facility in Wisconsin seventeen years ago under an assumed name."
I stood.
"Is she alive?"
A pause.
"Yes."
I covered my mouth.
Agent Bennett continued.
"We're verifying her identity now."
I began crying.
Then she said, "Elena, there's something else."
May you like
"What?"
"The woman has been asking for you."
