Chapter 1 - The Question That Changed Everything

My ex-husband saw me eight months pregnant with his child, looked at my stomach, and asked, “Is the baby mine?” Minutes later, one careless sentence from the woman holding his arm would make Luca question the story that had ended our marriage. And that was not even the part that made my entire body go cold.
My name is Isabella Bennett, and the day Vanessa Sinclair underestimated me was the day she destroyed herself.
For one strange second, nobody moved.
I stood beside a white oak crib in a Madison Avenue nursery boutique, one hand beneath the weight of my belly, while Luca Moretti stared at me from less than twenty feet away.
Vanessa Sinclair was holding his arm.
Her fingers tightened around his sleeve.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not his charcoal suit.
Not the familiar line of his jaw.
Her hand.
On him.
We had been divorced for seven months.
A little more than eight months had passed since I walked out of the townhouse where I once thought I would spend the rest of my life.
Then Luca said my name like he had seen a ghost.
“Isabella?”
I forced myself to breathe.
“Hello, Luca.”
Vanessa’s eyes dropped to my stomach.
“How far along are you?”
I could have avoided the answer.
But the truth was already standing between us.
“Eight months.”
Silence.
Luca looked at my belly.
I watched him calculate.
Seven months divorced.
Eight months pregnant.
His face went completely still.
Then he asked the question that hurt more than I wanted him to know.
“Is the baby mine?”
I wanted to slap him.
Instead, I looked directly into his eyes.
“The dates aren’t complicated, Luca.”
Shock crossed his face.
Then disbelief.
Then something darker that almost looked like pain.
Vanessa recovered first.
“Well,” she said softly, “this is unexpected.”
Luca took one step toward me.
“You should have told me.”
My hand tightened against the crib.
“You made it clear what you wanted.”
His brow pulled together.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa touched his forearm.
“Luca, maybe we should leave.”
“No.”
The word came from me.
Vanessa looked at me.
I kept my eyes on her.
“Stay.”
Something flickered across her face.
It vanished quickly.
But Luca saw it too.
He turned back to me.
“What did I make clear?”
I laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“I got your message.”
“What message?”
“The message where you told me our marriage was over.”
His jaw tightened.
“I told you that?”
“You signed it.”
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa gave an irritated laugh.
“This is ridiculous. The Mercer Hotel happened months ago.”
The room went silent.
I stopped breathing.
Luca slowly turned toward her.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
So did he.
“The Mercer Hotel?”
She blinked.
“What?”
“The photographs.”
His voice became quiet.
“You just called it the Mercer Hotel. How do you know where those photographs were taken?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“I heard it somewhere.”
“From whom?”
“I don’t remember.”
Luca stared at her.
Neither of us spoke.
The photographs had never been made public.
According to Luca, they had been delivered anonymously to his private office.
Even I had never told Vanessa the hotel name.
At least, I didn’t think I had.
My stomach tightened.
Not from the baby.
From memory.
Vanessa standing beside me near the staircase that final night.
Vanessa handing me the envelope.
Vanessa knowing exactly when I had packed.
Vanessa saying Luca did not want to see me.
And for the first time, the story I had believed for seven months no longer felt solid beneath my feet.
Luca kept his eyes on Vanessa.
His voice was quiet again.

Then he asked the question that made her hesitate.
“How do you know where those photographs were taken?”
