Chapter 6 - Family Reunion

Carmine Moretti looked remarkably well for a dead man.
His silver hair was slicked back against the rain, his posture regal despite the slight hunch of his eighty-year-old frame. The ivory cane clicked against the asphalt as he walked toward the edge of the headlights, flanked by six heavily armed private contractors.
“You always were a hothead, Alexander,” Carmine said, his voice effortlessly cutting through the roar of the wind. “Just like your uncle Salvatore here. You shoot first and check the bloodline second.”
Salvatore Falcone, a stocky man with cold, hooded eyes and a brutal scar across his jaw, gave a thin, mocking smile. “He has Isabella’s eyes, Carmine. Pity he didn't inherit her survival instincts.”
Behind me, the car door clicked open. Vincent dragged his ruined leg out, collapsing into the gravel, clutching his chest. “Dad... Dad, I brought him to you. Like we agreed. Tell them to call off the shooters!”
Carmine didn't even look at his younger son. “You failed, Vincent. A toddler managed to disarm you with a cup of warm milk. You’re lucky I don't leave you here for the gulls.”
I stood between the two dons and the car where Lily sat strapped inside. The rain beat mercilessly against my shoulders. My magazine held six rounds. They had twenty men. The math was simple, brutal, and lethal.
“Why fake your death?” I asked, keeping my voice level, buying every second I could. “Why put the crown on my head just to tear it off?”
“Because the federal government had a RICO indictment with my name on every page,” Carmine replied casually, tapping the tip of his cane on the wet pavement. “The only way to kill an investigation is to kill the defendant. I needed a successor who was aggressive enough to keep the vultures away, but blind enough not to look into the offshore holding accounts. You did an admirable job, son. The business grew thirty percent under your watch.”
“And Elena?”
“Elena got curious,” Falcone interrupted, his voice rasping. “She started looking into the blind trusts. She found out that the Moretti and Falcone empires were two halves of the same offshore syndicate. When she realized the turf wars were orchestrated distractions to justify extortion and laundering, she threatened to expose the entire registry.”
“She was protecting our daughter!” I shouted, my fist clenching around the grip of my gun.
“She was a liability,” Carmine said coldly. “Just as you are becoming one. But Lily... Lily is blood. The Falcone and Moretti bloodlines united in one innocent child. She is the legal heir to every trust fund Elena locked down. The biometric encryption on that satellite drive doesn't respond to me, Alex. It doesn't respond to Falcone. Elena programmed it to Lily’s retinal scan and voice print.”
The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.
They didn't want the ledger to destroy it. They needed Lily alive to unlock their stolen billions. Without her, they were penniless kings ruling a bankrupt empire.
“You’re never touching her,” I said.
Carmine sighed, a tired, grandfatherly gesture. “Alexander, look around you. Your brother is crippled. Your chief of security is bleeding out in the ditch. You have six bullets against thirty assault rifles. Give me the girl, and I let you leave the country. A quiet life in South America. No more blood.”
From inside the car, a tiny voice floated through the cracked window:
“Dada? Rain stopping?”
I didn't turn around. I couldn't look at her, or my resolve would crumble into dust.
“Marco,” I said softly, not shifting my gaze from my father’s eyes.
Marco, lying in the mud five feet away, clutching his shattered shoulder, looked up weakly.
“You swore an oath to my mother before you took Carmine’s coin,” I whispered in Sicilian, the ancient dialect my father had forbidden in the house. “You swore on Isabella’s grave that you would never let harm come to her direct bloodline.”
Marco’s eyes widened slightly in the gloom. He looked from me to the car where Lily sat.
“Carmine lied to you, Marco,” I continued, never raising my tone. “Elena wasn't going to the feds. Elena was bringing the files to you. She wanted you to take Lily and run before Carmine resurfaced. She trusted you more than me.”
Carmine frowned, noticing the exchange. “Enough of this. Take the child from the vehicle.”
Two contractors stepped forward, their assault rifles raised.
Marco’s hand moved.
