Chapter 9 - THE KING WHO CHOSE LOVE OVER POWER

By the time we reached the Mercante estate, flames were climbing the west wing.

Fire trucks lined the driveway.

Smoke rolled across the lawn.

The windows of the library had shattered.

Vincenzo stepped out of the SUV.

Gio grabbed his arm.

“Boss, you can't go inside.”

“The painting's in the library.”

“The library's burning.”

Vincenzo looked at me.

Then at the house.

I knew what he was thinking.

The ledger could destroy Luca.

It could clear his father's name—or condemn it forever.

It could give us the truth.

But it was inside a burning building.

“No,” I said.

Vincenzo turned.

“Violet—”

“No. I'm not losing you for a painting.”

His expression softened.

“We need that evidence.”

“We'll find another way.”

For a moment, I thought he would argue.

Instead, he took my hand.

“Then we find another way.”

That was the moment I understood how much he had changed.

The man I had met would have ordered everyone around him to risk their lives for what he wanted.

The man standing before me chose to stay.

With me.

An hour later, Gio found the answer.

The painting had been removed from the library before the fire.

Security footage showed Monica carrying it through the east entrance.

She had arrived thirty minutes before the first alarm.

“She started the fire,” I whispered.

Vincenzo watched the footage.

“Or helped someone else start it.”

Gio enlarged the image.

Monica wasn't alone.

A man followed her.

Luca.

Then a third figure stepped into view.

Elijah Robbie.

Vincenzo's expression turned lethal.

“They're all together.”

Gio nodded.

“And they've called an emergency board meeting tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“DeLuca Maritime headquarters.”

I stared at him.

“They're going to use the ledger.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Not to expose themselves.”

“To destroy the evidence,” my mother said.

Vincenzo looked at me.

“Then tomorrow we take the company back.”

The boardroom was full when we arrived.

Luca stood at the head of the table.

Monica sat beside him.

Elijah leaned against the windows.

A dozen executives watched us enter.

Luca smiled.

“Vincenzo. I thought you'd be mourning your house.”

Vincenzo didn't answer.

I walked to the center of the room.

“Where's my painting?”

Monica laughed.

“Excuse me?”

“The painting you stole before setting the mansion on fire.”

Her smile vanished.

Luca stood.

“You need to leave.”

“No.”

I placed a tablet on the table.

Security footage began playing.

Monica carrying the painting.

Luca following.

Elijah entering the library.

The room went silent.

Luca looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

I smiled.

“Actually, I do.”

Gio opened a briefcase.

Inside were copies of financial records.

Bank transfers.

Shipping manifests.

Payments to shell companies.

Luca's face changed.

“Where did you get those?”

Adrian stepped into the room.

“From me.”

For one extraordinary moment, Luca looked as if he had seen a ghost.

“Adrian?”

Adrian smiled without warmth.

“Hello, Luca.”

Monica stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

Elijah reached inside his jacket.

Vincenzo drew his gun.

“Don't.”

Elijah froze.

Gio's men moved into position.

The boardroom doors opened.

Federal agents entered.

A woman in a navy suit stepped forward.

“Luca Mercante, Elijah Robbie, Monica Vale. You're under arrest.”

Luca laughed.

“You think this is over?”

The agent ignored him.

Monica began crying.

Elijah looked toward the windows.

And then Luca turned to Vincenzo.

“You ungrateful little bastard.”

Vincenzo said nothing.

“I built this family.”

“You tried to destroy it.”

“I did what your father was too weak to finish.”

Vincenzo's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Luca smiled.

“Ask your pretty bride who really killed Lucino.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Vincenzo.

He looked at me.

Luca laughed.

“You still don't understand?”

He pointed at my mother.

“Isabella killed your father.”

Vincenzo turned slowly.

My mother went pale.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Luca, shut your mouth.”

But Luca was smiling now.

“She poisoned him. Three days before the second will was signed.”

Vincenzo stared at Isabella.

“Is that true?”

My mother began shaking.

I gripped her hand.

“Mom?”

She looked at me.

Then at Vincenzo.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“I killed Lucino Mercante.”

The federal agents took Luca, Elijah, and Monica away.

But Vincenzo didn't move.

He stood beside the windows, staring at my mother.

“Why?”

Isabella's voice trembled.

“Because he was going to kill Violet.”

Vincenzo looked at me.

My mother continued.

“Lucino discovered that Adrian had escaped. He knew we'd eventually expose him. He planned to have Violet murdered and blame a rival family.”

“Then why sign the second will?”

“To trap Luca. Lucino knew his brother wanted the companies. He intended to use the marriage to control both families, then eliminate anyone who could challenge him.”

Vincenzo closed his eyes.

“My father…”

“He wasn't the man you thought he was.”

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then Vincenzo looked at Isabella.

“Did you poison him?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Are you going to tell the authorities?”

“Yes.”

I turned sharply.

“Mom—”

She touched my face.

“I've spent eighteen years hiding from what I did. I won't make you live with another lie.”

I began crying.

“I just got you back.”

She held me.

“I know.”

Vincenzo watched us.

Then he stepped forward.

“Gio.”

“Yes, boss?”

“Call my attorney.”

My mother looked up.

Vincenzo's voice was steady.

“She deserves a fair trial. And every piece of evidence showing why she believed Violet's life was in danger.”

I stared at him.

“You're helping her?”

He looked at me.

“I can't change what happened to my father. But I won't let anyone else destroy your family to protect his reputation.”

My chest tightened.

“Vincenzo…”

He reached for my hand.

And I let him take it.

That night, we stood in the garden behind the safe house.

The air was cold.

The city glittered beyond the trees.

Vincenzo looked exhausted.

His mansion was gone.

His family name was stained.

His uncle was under arrest.

His father had been exposed as a monster.

And yet he looked strangely peaceful.

“Are you going to rebuild the mansion?” I asked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Too many ghosts.”

I looked at him.

“What about the company?”

“I'll keep the legitimate businesses. Sell the rest. Shut down anything I can't defend in daylight.”

“That won't be easy.”

“No.”

“You'll make enemies.”

“I already have plenty.”

I smiled faintly.

He turned toward me.

“Violet.”

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something.”

My heart began racing.

He took a small velvet box from his pocket.

I stared.

“Vincenzo…”

He opened it.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

Not enormous.

Not designed to impress a room full of strangers.

Just beautiful.

“I asked you to marry me once because I needed power,” he said.

His voice broke slightly.

“I won't make that mistake again.”

He lowered himself onto one knee.

“Violet DeLuca, I don't need your shares. I don't need your inheritance. I don't need a marriage to save my company.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“I just need the chance to spend my life loving you.”

He looked up.

“Will you marry me?”

I covered my mouth.

Then I whispered the only answer that felt true.

“Yes.”

He slipped the ring onto my finger.

And when he stood, I kissed him.

Not because I owed him anything.

Not because he had saved my life.

But because I loved him.

For the first time, the choice was entirely mine.

Then his phone rang.

Gio.

Vincenzo answered.

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Violet.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

He swallowed.

“They found the painting.”

I stared at him.

“And?”

His voice was barely audible.

“There was a second ledger hidden inside the frame.”

I felt cold.

“What was in it?”

Vincenzo looked toward the house.

Then back at me.

“A list of children.”

I stopped breathing.

“Children?”

May you like

He nodded.

“And your name is the first one.”
