Chapter 8 - The Truth Her Grandmother Buried

The emerald necklace sat inside a velvet box on the conference table.
Eliza stared at it.
"Why would my grandmother leave something like this to me?"
Victoria, who had joined them through a secure video call, answered quietly.
"Because Margaret knew Arthur would come looking for it."
Rebecca examined the necklace under a magnifying lens.
"There's something unusual about the clasp."
A tiny compartment was hidden beneath the emerald setting.
Inside was a folded strip of paper.
Eliza carefully removed it.
The writing was faded but legible.
Marlowe House. East wall. Third stone beneath the window.
Paige's voice came through a recording found on her abandoned phone.
"Grandma used to talk about a room in the old house. She said it held the truth about Richard and Arthur."
Eliza looked at Dominic.
"The original documents."
He nodded.
The old Marlowe estate had been abandoned for years.
But the property belonged to Eliza's trust.
She had never visited it as an adult.
Dominic, Griffin, and Rebecca went there with a law enforcement team.
Inside the east wall, they discovered a metal box containing bank records, photographs, and a series of handwritten letters.
The documents proved that Richard and Arthur had used Blackridge companies to conceal money stolen from investors and small businesses.
More importantly, they revealed that Arthur had arranged the fraudulent transfer of Eliza's inheritance.
But one letter changed everything.
It was addressed to Dominic.
My dear boy,
Your father was not the man you believed him to be. Neither was I always the woman you needed me to be.
If you are reading this, then Arthur has found the papers.
I tried to save you by leaving. I thought distance would protect you. I was wrong.
Your grandmother Margaret helped me hide the evidence. She also made me promise to protect Eliza.
Dominic looked up.
"Protect Eliza from what?"
Victoria's voice broke.
"From a secret about her own family."
Rebecca unfolded another document.
A birth certificate.
Eliza Marlowe.
Mother: Catherine Marlowe.
Father: Richard Rourke.
The room went silent.
Eliza stared at the paper.
"No."
Dominic looked at her.
"Eliza?"
She shook her head.
"My father died before I was born."
Rebecca examined the document.
"This appears to be an original registration."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Richard had a relationship with your mother before he married Dominic's mother. He refused to acknowledge you. Margaret knew the truth and arranged for Catherine to raise you away from the Rourkes."
Eliza felt the room tilt.
"So Dominic and I..."
Victoria shook her head quickly.
"No. You are not biologically related to Dominic. Richard was your father, but Dominic's mother was not your mother, and the two of you share no biological parent."
Eliza covered her mouth.
The relief was immediate.
But it was followed by another wave of horror.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
"Because Richard was dangerous," Victoria said. "And because Margaret believed keeping you away from the family was the only way to keep you alive."
Dominic turned away.
His father had hidden an entire daughter.
And the woman he had married had unknowingly inherited a piece of the empire he was trying to dismantle.
The documents also revealed something else.
Arthur had been using the family connection to claim a legal interest in Eliza's trust.
He wanted to control Blackridge through her shares.
The old estate became a crime scene.
But Paige was still missing.
At 11:55 p.m., Griffin received a call.
"We found the location."
Dominic grabbed his coat.
"Where?"
"The original Rourke estate."
Eliza stood.
"I'm coming."
"Eliza—"
"She's my sister."
Dominic looked at her for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
"Stay behind the officers. Don't leave my sight."
She met his eyes.
"I'll stay with the team. But don't expect me to stand quietly while someone else decides my family's future."
At midnight, the estate gates opened.
And Arthur was waiting.
He stood beneath the chandelier in the same ballroom where Dominic had once announced Celeste as his future wife.
Paige was beside him.
May you like
Alive.
But the gun in Arthur's hand was pointed directly at her chest.
