Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD

We escaped through the rear exit.
Silas pushed Clara ahead while I covered the hallway.
The gunfire continued behind us.
Three cars waited outside.
We reached the first.
Then another vehicle came around the corner.
Black SUV.
I recognized the driver.
One of my own men.
“Down!”
The SUV crashed into the first car.
Silas dragged me backward.
Clara screamed.
Men poured from the second vehicle.
Not ours.
The firefight lasted less than a minute.
Then silence.
One attacker remained alive.
Silas dragged him inside.
“Who sent you?”
The man laughed through bloodied teeth.
“You're too late.”
“Where is Lily?”
“Ask your mother.”
Then he swallowed something.
His body went limp.
Silas checked his pulse.
“Dead.”
I stared at him.
“Find my mother.”
We returned to Manhattan.
Clara sat across from me.
For the first time in years, I saw the truth in someone else's eyes.
She wasn't afraid of my reputation.
She was afraid of what she knew.
“Start talking.”
Clara looked at Grace.
“Does she know?”
Grace nodded.
Clara sighed.
“Then everyone should.”
She explained everything.
My father had built the Hale empire through legitimate businesses.
But behind it was an underground network.
When my mother discovered it, she tried to leave.
My father threatened her.
She escaped.
But before she disappeared, she took evidence.
Evidence that could destroy him.
Years later, my father died.
But his network survived.
My uncle Victor had taken control.
And then Victor discovered Lily.
“She wasn't kidnapped because of you,” Clara said.
I looked at her.
“She was kidnapped because of what your mother hid.”
“What?”
“A ledger.”
My jaw tightened.
“What ledger?”
“The original records of your father's network.”
“Where is it?”
“Your mother has it.”
Grace spoke.
“And Lily?”
Clara looked at her.
“Lily was used as leverage.”
My fists tightened.
“By whom?”
“Victor.”
“He's alive.”
“Yes.”
I stood.
“I'll kill him.”
Grace immediately shook her head.
“That won't solve this.”
I turned.
“You have a better idea?”
“Yes.”
She walked toward me.
“Save Lily first.”
Her words stopped me.
I looked at her.
She continued.
“Then destroy the people who took her using the evidence.”
I stared at her.
She was right.
For the first time, I realized why Lily's survival mattered more than revenge.
My daughter didn't need a father who destroyed everything.
She needed a father who came home.
That night, a package arrived.
No sender.
Inside was a photograph.
Lily.
Standing beside an older woman.
My mother.
Alive.
On the back was a message.
COME ALONE.
Below it was an address.
A private estate outside Philadelphia.
I looked at Clara.
“It's a trap.”
“Yes.”
“Then why send me?”
She answered softly.
“Because your mother wants you to come.”
I stared at the photograph.
My daughter was smiling.
That was enough.
“I'll go.”
Silas stepped forward.
“Boss, you won't be alone.”
“I said alone.”
“I'm not asking.”
I looked at him.
He smiled.
“You can fire me tomorrow.”
I almost smiled.
“Fine.”
The estate was surrounded by forest.
The house looked abandoned.
I entered alone.
“Mom?”
Silence.
Then a voice.
“Julian.”
My heart stopped.
An older woman stepped into the hallway.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
But unmistakably my mother.
I couldn't move.
“You're alive.”
She smiled sadly.
“I've been alive every day.”
“Why?”
“To keep you alive.”
“Where is Lily?”
Her expression changed.
“She was here.”
My heart dropped.
“Was?”
“Victor took her.”
I turned toward the door.
“Where?”
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Julian, listen.”
I stopped.
“He doesn't want money.”
“What does he want?”
“The ledger.”
“I don't have it.”
“I know.”
She looked at me.
“But he believes I gave it to you.”
I stared.
“Did you?”
“No.”
She took my hand.
“Your father hid the ledger somewhere only you could find.”
“Where?”
My mother whispered:
“Inside the empty chair.”
I froze.
The empty chair.
The one beside my plate.
The chair Lily's mother had once occupied.
The chair I had refused to let anyone touch for two years.
I suddenly understood.
My father hadn't hidden the ledger in a bank.
He had hidden it in my home.
Where I would eventually find it.
If I remembered.
Then my mother's face changed.
“Julian.”
“What?”
“He knows about Grace.”
My blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?”
“Victor knows about the little girl.”
“Amara?”
My mother nodded.
“He knows Grace was the nurse who saved Lily.”
I reached for my phone.
No signal.
The lights went out.
And somewhere in the darkness...
a little girl's voice came through a speaker.
May you like
“Daddy?”
Lily.
