Chapter 5 - THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE

“No.”

Clare repeated the word until it stopped sounding real.

Maya was asleep upstairs.

She was still Clare’s daughter.

Nothing could change that.

But biology had just opened a door into a nightmare.

Dante’s investigators reconstructed the hospital records.

Clare had delivered a baby girl at 2:11 a.m.

Elena Bellini had delivered another at 1:46.

Clare’s biological daughter had been born with a catastrophic heart defect.

She survived forty-seven minutes.

Nobody had told Clare.

Instead, records showed Maya Jensen—later Maya Peterson—leaving the hospital in Clare’s arms.

Someone had replaced one child with another.

“Why?” Clare whispered.

Marco stared at the evidence.

Dante knew before anyone said it.

“To hide Elena’s baby.”

“From whom?”

Marco finally answered.

“Her father.”

Clare looked at him.

Marco’s shame was visible.

“Elena had been seeing Luca Vescari.”

Silence.

Dante stood.

“Luca?”

“She never told me directly. I suspected.”

“And you said nothing?”

“She begged me not to interfere.”

Marco’s voice broke.

“I thought I was protecting her.”

Luca Vescari had been married.

A child outside that marriage would have created scandal.

But scandal alone did not explain switching babies.

Then Dante found the missing piece.

Elena had overheard Luca planning the attack that eventually killed Alessia.

Years before it happened.

She had evidence.

Alessia helped her escape.

When Elena gave birth, Alessia arranged the switch to protect the infant from Luca.

Clare had been unconscious.

Her own daughter had died.

Richard Peterson, then a hospital financial administrator, altered records for money.

Later, he married Clare.

Not from coincidence.

He was assigned to watch the child.

Maya.

Clare ran to the bathroom and vomited.

Dante followed but remained outside the door.

He did not touch her.

He waited.

When Clare finally emerged, her face was wet.

“My whole marriage…”

“I know.”

“He watched me raise her for Luca.”

“Yes.”

“And when I tried to leave—”

“He followed.”

Clare wrapped her arms around herself.

“Does Luca want Maya?”

Dante hesitated.

She saw the answer.

“Why?”

“Because Elena may have hidden evidence in something belonging to her daughter.”

Clare immediately thought of the necklace.

Marco had already opened it.

Nothing.

Then Clare remembered the stuffed rabbit.

Bun.

Richard had bought it for Maya’s first birthday.

No.

Not bought.

He had said it arrived from his mother.

“Where’s the rabbit?”

They found it beside Maya.

Marco examined the stitching.

One ear had been repaired.

Inside was a tiny waterproof capsule.

Dante opened it.

A memory card.

Marco stared.

“Elena.”

The files contained photographs, bank transfers and audio recordings.

Enough to establish that Luca had financed multiple attacks against Dante’s organization.

Then came the final audio file.

Elena’s voice.

“If you’re hearing this, I probably didn’t make it.”

Marco turned away.

The recording continued.

“I’m sorry, Marco.”

His shoulders shook.

“I should have listened to you.”

Then Elena said something that made Dante stop breathing.

“Alessia knows everything. She promised me that if something happens to me, she’ll protect my daughter.”

Dante sat down.

Alessia had kept that promise.

For four years.

Without telling him.

Why?

The recording answered.

“Dante can’t know yet. Luca has someone inside his house.”

Dante looked at Marco.

Marco looked back.

Someone inside.

Not Marco.

The traitor who had helped arrange Alessia’s death might still be working for Dante.

Then an alarm sounded.

One of Dante’s men entered.

“Police are at the gate.”

“Why?”

“They have an international warrant.”

“For whom?”

The man looked toward Clare.

“Her.”

Clare’s blood went cold.

Richard had reported Maya kidnapped.

And because Richard remained legally listed as Maya’s father, Clare was now being accused of abducting her own daughter across international borders.

Dante stepped toward the window.

Police vehicles filled the driveway.

Marco asked, “What do we do?”

Dante’s old instincts answered immediately.

Make the police disappear.

Make Richard disappear.

Make the problem disappear.

Then he looked at Clare.

She had spent seven years living under another man’s control.

He could not rescue her by becoming another cage.

“What do you want to do?” Dante asked.

Clare looked surprised.

“You’re asking me?”

“Yes.”

She looked through the window.

Then at sleeping Maya.

“We stop running.”

Dante nodded.

Clare took his hand.

“Even if it means I lose her.”

His fingers closed around hers.

May you like

“You won’t face it alone.”

And downstairs, Dante Salvatore opened his front door to the police.
