Chapter 7 - The Price of Power

Nobody moved.

Victor held the remote casually.

Clara looked down.

Wires were visible beneath the transparent section of stage flooring.

Enzo’s voice came from the darkness.

“Let her go.”

Victor smiled.

“Come closer, nephew.”

Enzo stepped into the light.

“No.”

Clara’s voice stopped him.

Victor seemed delighted.

“Interesting.”

He studied her.

“Twenty-four hours ago he slapped you. Tonight he is prepared to walk onto an explosive stage for you.”

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“People can regret things.”

“Regret is weakness.”

“No. Refusing to change is weakness.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, Clara had touched something.

Not his fear.

His pride.

“You sound like Evelyn.”

“Good.”

Victor lifted the remote.

“Give me the ring.”

Clara removed the necklace.

Enzo stiffened.

“Clara.”

She ignored him.

Victor extended his hand.

“Slide it across.”

She did.

The ring stopped near his shoe.

Victor bent down.

That was the moment Clara had been waiting for.

She kicked the glass case containing the watch.

It fell from the pedestal.

Victor instinctively turned.

Enzo moved.

One second.

That was all.

He crossed the distance and hit Victor hard enough to send the remote spinning.

A gunshot exploded.

Clara dropped.

Alessandro’s men rushed the stage.

Victor escaped through a trapdoor.

Again.

But this time he left the watch.

Enzo picked it up.

Clara recovered the ring.

They had both keys.

Victor had lost.

Or so they thought.

Back at the vault, Luca inserted the watch into a hidden slot while Clara placed the ring into the door.

The digital archive unlocked.

Thousands of files appeared.

Payments.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Enough evidence to destroy careers, fortunes, and criminal organizations across several states.

Enzo stared at the screen.

“This could burn half the city.”

Alessandro nodded.

“And us with it.”

Clara looked at him.

“You’re in there?”

“Yes.”

Enzo gave a grim smile.

“So am I.”

Clara understood the choice.

They could destroy Victor.

But only by exposing themselves.

Alessandro could lose everything.

Enzo could go to prison.

Their organizations could collapse.

Victor had built his protection around mutually assured destruction.

Clara looked at Evelyn’s recorded message again.

Power without mercy is only fear wearing an expensive suit.

“What happens if we release everything?”

Alessandro answered first.

“People who deserve prison may go there.”

“And you?”

“Possibly.”

Enzo leaned against the table.

“Definitely.”

Clara looked at him.

“For what?”

“Financial crimes. Conspiracy. Things done before I became smart enough to understand that inheriting my father’s mistakes did not require repeating them.”

“You could destroy the files.”

“Yes.”

“Will you?”

“No.”

That answer changed something between them.

Alessandro looked at Enzo.

For perhaps the first time, not as an enemy.

Clara copied the archive.

Three encrypted drives.

One went to a federal prosecutor Evelyn had identified as trustworthy years earlier.

One went to an investigative attorney.

One stayed with Clara.

At 4:03 a.m., they sent the first files.

By sunrise, warrants were being prepared.

Victor responded immediately.

He kidnapped Luca.

A video arrived at 7:20.

Luca sat tied inside an unknown warehouse.

Victor stood behind him.

“Bring the archive.”

Enzo watched without blinking.

Victor continued.

“Or Luca dies at noon.”

The video ended.

Enzo grabbed his jacket.

Clara blocked him.

“You’re not going alone.”

“Yes, I am.”

“That’s what Victor wants.”

“He has Luca.”

“And he wants you angry.”

Enzo stared at her.

“He has been beside me since I was sixteen.”

“Then save him intelligently.”

Enzo stopped.

Nobody spoke to him that way.

Except apparently Clara.

She studied the video.

Art history had taught her to notice backgrounds.

Composition.

Light.

Architecture.

Behind Victor was a broken stained-glass window.

Clara enlarged it.

A blue star.

Red border.

She had seen it before.

“St. Matthew’s.”

Alessandro frowned.

“The abandoned church near Red Hook?”

“It was converted into a warehouse in 2018.”

Enzo was already moving.

They reached Red Hook twenty-seven minutes before noon.

But Victor had anticipated them.

Luca was there.

Alive.

Victor was not.

On the chair beside Luca sat another envelope.

Clara opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Her birth certificate.

But something was wrong.

Under father, Salvatore Moretti’s name had been crossed out.

A handwritten note appeared beneath it.

ASK ALESSANDRO WHY THE DNA TEST WAS FAKED.

Clara slowly turned.

Alessandro stared at the document.

Enzo swore.

“Another lie?”

Clara whispered.

Alessandro shook his head.

“No.”

But his face said otherwise.

Clara’s heart began pounding.

“Am I Salvatore’s daughter?”

Alessandro did not answer.

“Tell me.”

Finally, he whispered:

“No.”

The entire inheritance story collapsed in one word.

Enzo stared at him.

“Then whose daughter is she?”

Alessandro looked at Clara.

His eyes filled with something she had never seen before.

Not fear.

May you like

Love.

“I am your biological father.”
