Chapter 5 - My Father’s Lie

My father called me at 2:14 in the morning.

Seventeen years of silence ended with two words.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

I couldn't breathe.

Alessandro stood across the room, watching my face.

Victor was tracing the call.

“Dad?”

A broken sound came through the phone.

“Yes.”

I sat down.

There were a thousand questions.

I chose the cruelest.

“Did you ever miss me?”

Silence.

“Every day.”

“Then why didn't you come home?”

“To keep you alive.”

“That excuse is getting crowded.”

“Claire, listen carefully. You cannot trust Alessandro Romano.”

My eyes moved toward Alessandro.

He heard.

“Why?”

“His father knew.”

“Knew what?”

“Everything.”

The call ended.

Victor slammed his phone down.

“Burner.”

I stood.

“I want the truth.”

“So do I,” Alessandro said.

“Your father knew.”

“We don't know what that means.”

“You keep saying that whenever your family appears guilty.”

His jaw tightened.

I expected anger.

Instead he nodded.

“You're right.”

That made being furious difficult.

By sunrise, we had a location.

An abandoned motel near Lake Michigan.

My father was waiting in Room 12.

I recognized him immediately.

Age had changed everything except his eyes.

He stared at me.

I stared back.

Then he opened his arms.

I didn't move.

His arms dropped.

“I deserve that.”

“You deserve worse.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro remained outside.

That had been my condition.

My father told me the rest.

Antonio Romano had discovered Sebastian and Dominic Vale stealing money together.

Daniel gathered evidence.

But before Antonio could act, Sebastian poisoned his heart medication.

My father claimed Antonio realized what was happening too late.

“He helped me disappear,” Dad said.

“Then why didn't he expose Sebastian?”

“Because Alessandro was twenty-one. Sebastian controlled half the organization. Antonio feared a civil war would kill his son.”

“So everyone lied to protect Alessandro.”

Dad's eyes lowered.

“And I lost my father.”

“Yes.”

“Did Mom know?”

“Not about Antonio.”

I paced.

“Why are you meeting Vale now?”

Dad's expression changed.

“Because he has something I need.”

“What?”

“A ledger.”

“The one from the safe-deposit box?”

His head snapped up.

“How do you know about that?”

I told him about the key.

His face drained.

“Claire, box 317 doesn't contain evidence.”

“What does it contain?”

“Insurance.”

Before he could explain, glass shattered.

Dad shoved me down.

A bullet tore into the wall.

Outside, Alessandro shouted my name.

Everything happened at once.

Victor returned fire.

Alessandro entered through the bathroom window like a man who had forgotten fear.

He pulled me behind the concrete wall.

“Are you hit?”

“No.”

His hands moved over my shoulders.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Another shot.

Dad crawled toward us.

“They found me.”

Alessandro looked at him.

For the first time, the son of Antonio Romano and the man his father had saved stood face-to-face.

“You're Daniel Bennett.”

“You're Antonio's boy.”

“I haven't been a boy for seventeen years.”

“No,” Dad said. “You haven't.”

Victor shouted that the shooters were retreating.

Alessandro stood.

I grabbed his sleeve.

“Don't.”

He looked down at my hand.

“Don't chase them.”

“Why?”

“Because that's what they expect.”

He hesitated.

Then stayed.

That decision saved his life.

Thirty seconds later, the attackers' abandoned SUV exploded at the end of the parking lot.

A trap.

Alessandro stared at the fire.

Then at me.

“You just saved my life.”

“Consider us even for the medication.”

“No.”

“What?”

His voice softened.

“We're nowhere close to even.”

Back inside, Dad finally explained box 317.

It contained a recording made by Antonio Romano.

Not financial evidence.

A confession.

Antonio had recorded himself naming everyone he suspected, documenting Sebastian's betrayal, and transferring legal control of several legitimate Romano companies to a trust.

The beneficiary wasn't Alessandro.

It was Daniel Bennett.

My father.

“Why you?”

“Because Antonio knew Sebastian would control Alessandro if he died.”

I stared at Dad.

“You own part of the Romano empire?”

“Technically.”

Alessandro's face gave away nothing.

Dad continued.

“I never claimed it.”

“Why?”

“Because the moment I did, Sebastian would know the recording survived.”

The truth suddenly became obvious.

Vale wasn't trying to find my father.

He was trying to find the recording.

And my mother had accidentally become the trail leading to it.

Alessandro's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Sebastian's voice filled the room.

“Bring Daniel and the key to Pier 19 tonight.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“Or?”

Sebastian laughed softly.

Then another voice came through.

My mother's.

“Claire?”

I stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

She was crying.

Then Sebastian returned.

“Midnight.”

The line disconnected.

I looked at Alessandro.

His eyes had gone black with rage.

But he didn't shout.

He didn't break anything.

May you like

He simply looked at me and said, very quietly,

“We're bringing your mother home.”
