Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S SECRET

Vanessa refused to meet Tyler alone.
For once, everyone agreed.
Police arranged the meeting at a café near Lincoln Park while plainclothes officers watched from nearby tables.
I went too.
Daniel didn't like that.
“I don't want you involved.”
I stared at him.
“That sentence stopped working approximately forty-eight hours ago.”
Margaret almost smiled.
Tyler Reed arrived ten minutes late.
He wasn't what I expected.
No villainous confidence.
No threatening swagger.
He looked exhausted.
He sat across from Vanessa.
“You brought the entire Bennett family?”
“Considering our son was kidnapped yesterday, yes.”
Tyler looked at Daniel.
“I didn't take Ethan.”
“Then start talking.”
Tyler looked toward me.
“You're Emily?”
“Yes.”
“I'm sorry.”
I had grown tired of strangers apologizing for my husband's behavior.
“Talk.”
Tyler took an envelope from his coat.
“Charles Bennett contacted me during the divorce. He said he had information proving Vanessa had lied about Ethan's paternity.”
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“You told me your attorney requested the test.”
“My attorney did. After Charles paid him.”
“Why?”
“I thought Charles wanted leverage against Daniel.”
“And now?”
Tyler pushed the envelope across the table.
“Now I know he wanted something else.”
Inside were old medical records.
Vanessa picked them up.
Then froze.
“What is this?”
“Your adoption file.”
She stopped breathing.
“I wasn't adopted.”
“Yes, you were.”
“No.”
“Your mother never told you.”
Vanessa stared at the papers.
Her hands shook.
The birth certificate listed another name.
Vanessa Marie Bennett.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What the hell?”
Tyler looked at Robert.
“Charles wasn't investigating Ethan because he thought Ethan might inherit the company.”
Robert went pale.
“He was investigating Vanessa.”
Tyler nodded.
Vanessa stared at the document.
“Who is my father?”
Nobody answered.
Then Robert sat back.
“No.”
Margaret looked at him.
“What?”
Robert whispered, “My father.”
The table went silent.
Vanessa's biological father was Daniel's grandfather.
Which meant Vanessa was Robert and Charles's half-sister.
And Daniel had unknowingly fathered a child with his father's half-sister.
The implications were horrifying.
But Tyler shook his head.
“No. That's what Charles wanted everyone to believe.”
He removed another document.
“A second DNA analysis.”
Vanessa grabbed it.
The first records had been falsified.
Her biological father wasn't Daniel's grandfather.
It was another Bennett.
Charles.
Vanessa stared at the page.
“Charles is my father?”
Tyler nodded.
“He was seventeen when you were conceived. Your biological mother was eighteen. The family arranged a private adoption.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
Robert looked sick.
Charles had a daughter nobody publicly knew existed.
And that daughter had a son with Daniel.
Ethan.
The oldest verified male descendant through the Bennett line.
But not through Robert's branch alone.
Through Charles's too.
Suddenly the trust became a battlefield.
“If Vanessa is Charles's biological daughter,” I said slowly, “does that change Ethan's claim?”
Robert nodded.
“Completely.”
“How?”
“He doesn't need Daniel.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Robert explained.
The trust did not prioritize Robert's descendants.
It prioritized the oldest verified descendant of the founder's bloodline after Robert's generation.
Ethan qualified through Vanessa even if Daniel's paternity disappeared.
Charles hadn't paid for DNA testing to prove Ethan belonged to Daniel.
He had been trying to prove Ethan belonged to him.
Through Vanessa.
“Then why threaten Ethan?” Daniel asked.
Tyler looked at him.
“Maybe Charles didn't.”
The thought settled heavily.
If Charles wanted Ethan recognized, he had no reason to eliminate him.
He had every reason to protect him.
So who benefited if Ethan disappeared?
Robert.
Daniel.
Or someone whose position depended on Robert's branch retaining control.
Margaret became very still.
“Robert.”
He looked at her.
“Who becomes trustee if Ethan is a minor?”
Robert didn't answer.
“Robert.”
“The current chief financial officer.”
Daniel frowned.
“Martin?”
Robert nodded.
Martin Shaw.
Robert's closest friend.
Daniel's godfather.
A man who had attended every Bennett Christmas for thirty-five years.
A man who controlled the company security fleet.
A man who had access to executive credit cards.
A man who knew every Bennett property.
A man who could plant charges.
Manipulate surveillance.
Access the house.
And direct company security.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
Margaret standing outside the café.
Taken seconds earlier.
Then:
You should have listened when you were told to stop.
I looked through the window.
Across the street, a black sedan pulled away.
Tyler stood abruptly.
“That's Martin's car.”
Daniel ran outside.
Too late.
The sedan disappeared into traffic.
Then Tyler's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked directly at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Alvarez just turned herself in.”
Vanessa stood.
“What did she say?”
Tyler swallowed.
“She says Charles paid her.”
Daniel cursed.
But Tyler wasn't finished.
“Not to kidnap Ethan.”
May you like
He looked at us.
“To protect him.”
