Chapter 7 - Adrian’s Last BargainLaura Bennett had nothing to do with the Whitmores.

That was precisely why Adrian chose her.

She was Evelyn's only sister.

A pediatric nurse.

Divorced.

Mother of a ten-year-old boy.

And at 7:32 that evening, she disappeared from a hospital parking garage.

Her son was safe with his father.

Laura wasn't.

Adrian called at 8:04.

Nathaniel answered.

“You've made this unnecessarily dramatic,” Adrian said.

“Let her go.”

“Bring me Theodore's original letter and Peter Cole.”

“No.”

Adrian laughed.

“Interesting. Years ago you'd have negotiated.”

“Years ago I was still pretending you were family.”

Silence.

Then Adrian's voice hardened.

“Midnight. Warehouse Fourteen.”

The call ended.

Rachel Monroe immediately rejected Nathaniel's plan to go.

Nathaniel immediately rejected her rejection.

Evelyn surprised both of them.

“I'm going.”

“No,” Nate said.

She stared at him.

He caught himself.

His expression changed.

“I don't want you there.”

“That's different.”

“I know.”

“Laura is my sister.”

“I know.”

“Then we're going.”

At 11:58, Evelyn and Nathaniel entered Warehouse Fourteen.

Adrian stood beneath an industrial light.

Laura was tied to a chair twenty feet away.

Alive.

Terrified.

Two armed men stood nearby.

“Brother,” Adrian said.

Nathaniel carried Theodore's letter.

Evelyn carried nothing.

Or appeared to.

Federal agents were positioned outside.

The problem was Adrian had men watching every entrance.

One wrong movement could kill Laura.

“Give me the letter,” Adrian said.

“Let Laura walk.”

“Letter first.”

Nathaniel smiled faintly.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

Something had changed between the brothers.

For years, Adrian had counted on Nathaniel's instinct to control every variable.

Now Nate was willing to lose.

That made him unpredictable.

“You've already lost your companies,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

“Your money.”

“Some.”

“Your name.”

Nathaniel shrugged.

“And Evelyn.”

That landed.

Nate glanced at her.

Then looked back at Adrian.

“Yes.”

Evelyn felt the word.

He didn't claim her.

Didn't perform confidence.

Didn't pretend reconciliation had happened.

Adrian seemed irritated by that.

“You destroyed everything for a woman who left you.”

“No.”

Nathaniel's voice was calm.

“I destroyed what needed destroying because it was built on lies.”

“You sound like her now.”

“Maybe I should've listened sooner.”

Adrian raised his gun.

Evelyn's pulse jumped.

“Give me the letter.”

Nathaniel lifted it.

Then tore it in half.

Adrian froze.

Again.

Four pieces.

“What are you doing?”

Nathaniel dropped them.

“That's a copy.”

Adrian's face changed.

“The original is already federal evidence.”

Laura started laughing.

It was nervous, terrified laughter.

But it broke something.

Adrian grabbed her by the hair.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Stop!”

Nathaniel's entire body went rigid.

Adrian pressed the gun against Laura's temple.

“Now we're negotiating.”

Evelyn looked toward her sister.

Laura's eyes dropped.

Once.

Toward the floor.

Evelyn followed.

A loose chain lay near Laura's foot.

Laura had been working one hand free.

Evelyn understood.

So did Laura.

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“You were always jealous of him.”

Adrian's face tightened.

“Don't psychoanalyze me.”

“Your father chose Nate.”

“Shut up.”

“Your mother left.”

“Evelyn.”

“Your stepmother discovered you were stealing.”

“Stop.”

“So you killed her.”

“I DIDN'T KILL HER!”

His shout echoed through the warehouse.

Outside, agents recorded every word.

Adrian's breathing turned ragged.

“I told Cole to get the documents. She panicked. That wasn't my fault.”

There.

Confession.

Nathaniel knew it.

Adrian realized a second later.

His face changed.

He pointed the gun at Evelyn.

Laura moved.

Her freed hand grabbed the chain.

She swung it into Adrian's knee.

He stumbled.

Nathaniel lunged.

The gun fired.

Evelyn screamed.

Nathaniel hit Adrian.

Both men crashed to the concrete.

Federal agents stormed the warehouse.

Gunfire erupted near the entrance.

One of Adrian's men surrendered.

The other was tackled.

Evelyn reached Laura.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where's Nate?”

They turned.

Nathaniel lay on the floor.

Blood spread beneath his black shirt.

Everything inside Evelyn stopped.

“Nate.”

She ran.

His eyes opened.

“Evelyn?”

“I'm here.”

Her hands pressed against the wound.

“Stay with me.”

His mouth moved.

“What?”

She leaned closer.

“I never signed them.”

“What?”

“Divorce papers.”

Tears blurred her vision.

“You idiot.”

A faint smile.

“I know.”

“You're not dying after saying something that stupid.”

Paramedics rushed in.

They pulled her hands away.

Nathaniel disappeared onto a stretcher.

And as Evelyn stood covered in his blood, Adrian Whitmore was dragged past her in handcuffs.

For fifteen years, Adrian had believed destroying Nathaniel required taking his empire.

He had been wrong.

The empire was replaceable.

May you like

Evelyn wasn't.

And Nathaniel had finally learned the difference.
