Chapter 8 - The Queen of the Night

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of champagne, diamonds, and corruption.

The annual Manhattan Winter Gala brought together New York’s high society: politicians, billionaire developers, and the ruthless crime families who pulled the strings behind closed doors. Rumors had been swirling through the room all evening about the violent altercation at the Vance Tower the day before, and the tension was so thick it could be cut with a blade.

Cassandra Sterling stood by the ice sculpture, wearing a backless emerald silk gown, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon with Julian Vance. Julian was sporting a heavily bandaged nose and dark purple bruises beneath both eyes, barely concealing his seething rage behind an expensive tuxedo.

“Did you hear?” Cassandra whispered venomously. “Adrian fired Lucian this morning. Word is, he’s having a nervous breakdown over that ridiculous nanny. The man has lost his mind.”

“He hasn't lost his mind,” Julian hissed, adjusting his bow tie with trembling fingers. “He’s lost his leverage. Tonight, the Five Families will force him to step down. He won't dare show his face here after what he did to my office.”

Just then, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung wide.

The chatter in the room instantly died. The orchestra faltered, then stopped playing altogether.

Adrian Valenti stepped onto the mezzanine.

He looked every inch the undisputed king of New York. He wore a custom midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated his imposing frame, his silver-streaked dark hair combed back, his cold gray eyes surveying the room with absolute supremacy.

But it was not Adrian who stole the breath from every throat in the room.

It was the woman on his arm.

Madeline Brooks descended the marble stairs beside him like a goddess carved from starlight.

She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of deep, shimmering royal sapphire velvet that hugged every curve of her full figure with unapologetic, breathtaking elegance. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate, classic chignon, leaving her graceful neck bare except for a single piece of jewelry: the Valenti family heirloom, a flawless fifty-carat teardrop sapphire surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds.

She didn't look down. She didn't shrink. She walked with the poise of an empress, her hand resting firmly on the forearm of the most feared man in the city.

Julian Vance’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor. His mouth hung open in utter, paralyzed shock.

Cassandra’s face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. “What is she wearing?! That’s Elena’s necklace! He gave her Elena’s necklace!”

As Adrian and Madeline reached the ballroom floor, the crowd parted before them like the Red Sea. Whispers rippled through the room:

*“Is that the nanny?”*

*“My God, she’s stunning.”*

*“Look at the way he looks at her...”*

Adrian didn't glance at the socialites or the syndicate bosses bowing their heads as he passed. His gaze was fixed solely on the trembling figure of Julian Vance.

Adrian led Madeline straight toward Julian and Cassandra.

When they stopped, Julian took an involuntary step back, his bandaged nose throbbing visibly.

“Good evening, Julian,” Adrian said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly to every ear within thirty feet. “I believe you already know my partner, Miss Madeline Brooks.”

Julian swallowed hard, his face burning with humiliation. “M-Madeline...”

Madeline looked at the man who had broken her heart, who had called her unlovable and discarded her like trash. Standing beside Adrian, bathed in the respect and fierce protection of a real man, she felt no anger. Only pity.

“You look terrible, Julian,” Madeline said calmly, her voice dripping with effortless poise. “The nose really accentuates your lack of spine.”

A muffled laugh broke out among the surrounding mafia dons. Julian turned a violent shade of scarlet.

Cassandra stepped forward, practically shaking with jealousy. “Adrian! This is an insult to everyone in this room! You bring this... this common, oversized servant to the Plaza wearing your dead wife’s jewels? Have you no shame?”

The room went dead silent. Insulting a Don’s deceased wife in public was an invitation to a blood feud.

Adrian turned his icy glare onto Cassandra. The air around them seemed to drop twenty degrees.

“My wife’s jewels belong to the woman who protects my children,” Adrian said, every syllable dropping like a lead weight. “Madeline bled for my son yesterday while you were drinking mimosas. If you ever speak her name again, Cassandra, your father’s shipping licenses will be revoked by midnight, and your family will be bankrupt by Monday morning.”

Cassandra backed away, her face pale, completely silenced.

Adrian then turned back to Julian, pulling a folded legal document from inside his tuxedo jacket and tossing it onto a nearby cocktail table.

“Sign the asset transfer, Julian. Right now. In front of your peers.”

Julian’s hands shook uncontrollably as he reached for a pen. He knew there was no way out. The other syndicate bosses were watching; none of them would lift a finger to save a man who had been caught stealing from Adrian Valenti.

Julian scribbled his signature on the dotted line, his pride and empire crumbling with every stroke of the pen.

When he finished, Adrian took the document, handed it to Frank, and then did something that sent shockwaves through the entire room.

He turned to Madeline, took her hand in his, and brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckles with tender reverence.

“May I have this dance, Madeline?” Adrian asked, his voice
