Chapter 5 - The Child Hidden From an EmpireDominic had not spoken the name Elena Russo in fourteen years.

Seeing her face again brought back a memory he had spent half his life trying to bury.
A winter night.
A warehouse near the river.
His father standing beside a black sedan.
And Elena's father, Carlo Russo, kneeling on wet concrete.
Carlo had been a respected freight broker before an accusation of betrayal destroyed him.
Dominic had been twenty-six.
Old enough to know what was happening.
Young enough to believe obedience was the only way to survive his father.
He had not given the order.
But he had done nothing to stop it.
That distinction had haunted him ever since.
Gemma watched his expression.
“You know her.”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
“Her name is Elena Russo.”
“Was she Adrian's girlfriend?”
Dominic nodded.
“They were together before he disappeared. My father forbade the relationship.”
“Why?”
“Because her father was accused of stealing from us.”
“Did he?”
Dominic stared at the photograph.
“I don't know anymore.”
Gemma noticed the last word.
“Anymore?”
He looked at her.
“For fourteen years, I believed Adrian was killed because he discovered something about our business. Now I'm beginning to think he was protecting someone.”
“His daughter?”
“Possibly.”
Gemma examined the baby's face.
The little girl had dark hair and enormous brown eyes.
“She'd be fourteen now.”
Dominic nodded.
Somewhere in the world, his brother's daughter might be alive.
A niece he had never met.
A child who might have grown up believing her father abandoned her.
The thought struck him with unexpected force.
They returned to Falcone Tower after investigators secured the envelope and documented its contents.
Dominic arranged for a forensic specialist to examine the flash drive on an isolated computer.
Gemma insisted on remaining present.
“You've barely slept,” Dominic said.
“I slept in your boardroom.”
“Thirty minutes.”
“Best thirty minutes I've had all week.”
He almost smiled.
Then he became serious.
“You can leave whenever you want.”
“I know.”
“I'm not asking as your employer.”
Gemma looked at him.
“Then who are you asking as?”
He didn't answer immediately.
“Someone who doesn't want to see you hurt.”
The words settled between them.
Gemma looked away first.
The flash drive contained hundreds of documents.
Most were financial records.
Shipping manifests.
Bank transfers.
Contracts involving companies that no longer existed.
But one folder was different.
It was labeled INSURANCE.
Inside was a video recorded fourteen years earlier.
Dominic recognized Adrian immediately.
His younger brother sat in a dimly lit room wearing a bloodstained white shirt.
A bruise darkened his cheek.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Dom, if you're watching this, something went wrong.”
Dominic stopped breathing.
Adrian continued.
“I know you think Dad built everything himself. He didn't. He took it from people who trusted him.”
The video flickered.
“I found the accounts. The money didn't disappear. It was transferred through three holding companies. Someone used our family to move it.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Dante knows. He was there when Carlo Russo tried to expose it.”
Dominic's hands curled into fists.
“But listen carefully. Dante isn't the person in charge.”
The recording distorted.
For a moment, Adrian's face froze.
Then he said, “The person giving the orders is someone you would never suspect.”
The screen went black.
Gemma leaned forward.
“Is that all?”
The specialist checked the file.
“It's corrupted after that point.”
“Can you recover it?”
“Maybe. It'll take time.”
Dominic remained motionless.
His brother had been alive after the river incident.
And someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to keep him silent.
At 10:17 p.m., Dante entered the building through the executive garage.
He had received an anonymous message.
Falcone found the music box.
For the first time in years, Dante felt genuine fear.
He called a number stored under a false name.
A woman answered.
“Is it done?” she asked.
“No.”
Silence.
Then, “Why not?”
“Because Dominic has the files.”
The woman inhaled slowly.
“Does he know about the girl?”
“He knows Adrian had a daughter.”
“Then we're out of time.”
Dante lowered his voice.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Exactly what you should have done fourteen years ago.”
The call ended.
Dante stood alone in the garage.
Then he removed a small pistol from his coat.
Upstairs, Gemma was examining the transaction records when she noticed a familiar account reference.
FAL-0917.
The same number from her audit.
But the account holder wasn't Dominic's father.
It was a trust.
A trust established for a minor child.
She clicked the beneficiary field.
Her breath caught.
“Dominic.”
He turned.
“What?”
“The account isn't empty.”
She rotated the monitor.
“It holds ninety-two million dollars.”
Dominic stared.
“And the beneficiary?”
Gemma swallowed.
“Lily Russo Falcone.”

Before he could answer, every light in the office went out.
Then the emergency security alarm began to sound.
