Chapter 6 - The Ledger

They returned to Queens under cover of darkness.

Danielle’s apartment had been destroyed.

Drawers emptied.

Mattress cut open.

Floorboards pried loose.

But the music box remained exactly where Danielle had hidden it years earlier—in the basement storage room inside a carton marked CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS.

Adrien examined it.

“Too light.”

Danielle removed the velvet lining.

Beneath it was a tiny brass key.

Not a ledger.

A key.

Attached to it was a faded tag.

GCT-214.

“Grand Central Terminal,” Danielle whispered.

The next morning, they entered Grand Central separately.

Locker 214 no longer existed.

But old terminal records led them to a private safe-deposit service that had operated nearby decades earlier.

The key opened box 214.

Inside lay a flash drive, handwritten ledgers, photographs, and a letter.

Danielle recognized her father’s handwriting.

Dani,

If you are reading this, I failed to get home.

Her knees weakened.

Adrien stood beside her while she read.

Michael Carter had discovered Victor Salerno stealing millions from both legitimate companies and criminal accounts. Antonio Moretti had confronted Victor.

But Antonio had not ordered Michael’s death.

According to Michael’s notes, Antonio planned to expose Victor.

Victor struck first.

He arranged Michael’s “accident,” then manipulated evidence to convince Antonio that Michael had fled with money.

Months later, Antonio began investigating again.

Then Antonio Moretti died of a sudden heart attack.

Adrien reread that line.

“My father wasn’t sick.”

Danielle looked at him.

Victor had killed both fathers.

And he had spent years beside Adrien afterward, guiding him, advising him, becoming family.

Adrien closed his eyes.

Danielle touched his arm.

“We have him.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“We have evidence.”

“We have evidence of old crimes. Victor has money, witnesses, politicians.”

“So?”

Adrien looked at her.

“So we make him confess.”

They created bait.

Danielle sent a message through an account Victor was monitoring.

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL LEDGER. I WANT $5 MILLION AND SAFE PASSAGE.

Victor responded in eleven minutes.

COME ALONE.

Adrien hated the plan.

“No.”

“You just said we needed a confession.”

“Not enough to send you into a room with him.”

“I spent seven years reaching this point.”

“And I spent seven years not realizing how much you mattered to me.”

Danielle stopped.

Adrien stepped closer.

“I won’t discover it and lose you in the same week.”

Her eyes softened.

“You’re not losing me.”

“You can’t promise that.”

She gave him his own words back.

“I just did.”

That evening, Danielle entered an abandoned waterfront restaurant carrying the fake ledger.

Victor waited inside.

He looked older than she expected.

Tired.

Almost ordinary.

“Michael’s girl,” he said.

“You remember me?”

“I remember everyone I’ve buried.”

Danielle’s blood went cold.

Hidden inside her necklace, a microphone transmitted every word.

Victor smiled.

“Your father was stubborn.”

“You killed him.”

“I solved a problem.”

Miles away, Adrien heard the confession.

His fist tightened.

Victor continued.

“Antonio became another problem.”

Danielle swallowed.

“You killed him too?”

Victor smiled.

“Adrien spent twenty years mourning a heart attack that never happened.”

Enough.

Adrien’s men moved.

But Victor had anticipated them.

The lights died.

Gunshots erupted.

Danielle dropped behind a table.

When emergency lights flickered on, Victor was gone.

And Danielle saw blood spreading across the floor.

May you like

“Adrien!”

He had been hit.
