Chapter 7 - The Night Adrian Chose

At 8:00 the following morning, Adrian Cole called a meeting.

Not with his captains.

Not with his lawyers.

With federal prosecutors.

Rebecca arranged it.

Claire insisted on attending.

Adrian objected.

She ignored him.

The meeting took place in a secured federal building in Manhattan, where Adrian entered through a private garage and surrendered his phone, watch, and weapon.

He looked strangely ordinary without them.

For four hours, investigators questioned Claire.

Then Thomas.

Then Adrian.

The ledger sat beneath fluorescent lights.

Every page became evidence.

Adrian admitted what was his.

Denied what was not.

He did not ask for immunity before speaking.

That surprised Rebecca.

It surprised Claire more.

At 1:37 p.m., an investigator entered with breaking news.

Miles Carter had released documents to three newspapers.

The headline appeared within minutes.

CRIMINAL EMPIRE LEDGER LINKS BUSINESS TYCOON ADRIAN COLE TO BRIBERY NETWORK.

Claire stared at the screen.

Miles had moved first.

Adrian’s public companies fell immediately.

Board members resigned.

Banks froze credit lines.

Reporters surrounded the Greenwich mansion.

Then Brooke Lawson gave an interview.

Claire saw it on a television mounted in the conference room.

Brooke sat alone.

No makeup.

No diamond.

“I had a relationship with Adrian Cole,” she said. “That relationship was wrong. But I was also pressured by Miles Carter to obtain information about Mr. Cole’s businesses.”

She produced messages.

Recordings.

Bank transfers.

Miles had not anticipated that.

By afternoon, the story changed.

By evening, it exploded.

Authorities raided three companies tied to Warren Pike.

Two of Miles’s associates were arrested.

Miles disappeared.

That made him more dangerous.

At 6:42 p.m., Claire received a message on her prepaid phone.

COME ALONE OR BROOKE DIES.

Attached was a photograph.

Brooke sat tied to a chair.

Claire showed Adrian.

“No.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You’re thinking it.”

“She helped me.”

“And Miles knows you’ll think exactly that.”

Claire looked at him.

“What would you do?”

“The wrong thing.”

That almost made her smile.

Adrian contacted federal agents.

They traced the image metadata.

A warehouse in Bridgeport.

Claire was ordered to remain behind.

This time she agreed.

Adrian did not go either.

That surprised everyone.

“You’re staying?” Claire asked.

He looked at her.

“I spent years believing protecting people meant personally walking toward every gun.”

“And now?”

“Now I’m trying something new.”

“What?”

“Trusting people whose job is actually to do that.”

Forty minutes later, agents entered the warehouse.

Brooke was found alive.

Miles was not there.

The photograph had been staged hours earlier.

A laptop remained.

On it was one live video feed.

Claire’s blood turned cold.

The camera showed the hallway outside the room where they were standing.

Miles had access to the federal building.

“No,” Adrian whispered.

The lights went out.

Alarms sounded.

Rebecca grabbed Claire.

“Move.”

Emergency lights flashed red.

Security officers rushed through the corridor.

Then gunfire sounded somewhere below.

Adrian pulled Claire behind a concrete wall.

“You stay with me.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

A door opened.

Miles stepped into the hallway wearing a security uniform.

He raised a weapon.

Adrian moved in front of Claire.

Miles smiled.

“There he is.”

“Put it down.”

“Your father told you?”

“Yes.”

“Then you know why.”

“I know what he did.”

“No.”

Miles’s expression broke for the first time.

“You know the story he tells himself.”

His father had not merely taken the blame.

Thomas had promised to protect Samuel’s family.

Instead, after Samuel went to prison, his wife lost their home.

Miles had been sixteen.

His mother died two years later.

“I watched your family celebrate Christmas in magazines,” Miles said. “While mine disappeared.”

Adrian did not defend Thomas.

“What happened to your father was wrong.”

Miles laughed.

“And that fixes it?”

“No.”

“Then move.”

Miles pointed the gun toward Claire.

Adrian did not.

“She has the evidence.”

“She gave it to federal agents hours ago.”

“I know.”

Miles smiled.

“That isn’t why I want her.”

Claire’s hand tightened around Adrian’s coat.

Miles looked at her stomach.

“I want you to understand what it feels like to lose your family because of a Cole.”

Adrian lunged.

The gun fired.

Claire screamed.

Adrian hit Miles hard enough to send both men into the wall.

A second shot struck the ceiling.

Federal officers rushed around the corner.

“Drop it!”

Miles twisted.

Adrian pinned his wrist.

For one terrible second, Adrian could have taken the gun and killed him.

Claire saw the decision in his face.

The old Adrian would have.

Instead, he released the weapon and stepped back.

Agents tackled Miles.

Handcuffs closed around his wrists.

Miles stared at Adrian from the floor.

“You think this makes you different from your father?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“No.”

Then back at Miles.

“What I do next will.”

Miles was taken away.

Only when the hallway became quiet did Adrian notice blood.

Claire’s blood.

She looked down.

A dark stain spread across her dress.

Her face went white.

“Adrian…”

May you like

He caught her as her knees gave way.

“My water broke.”
