Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

Sentinel’s emergency board meeting began at eight the next morning.
Richard walked in expecting Serena to be excluded.
She was sitting at the table.
His expression darkened.
“What is she doing here?”
Malcolm Pierce answered.
“Ms. Hastings-Sterling is here at my request.”
“Why?”
Serena placed copies of the disputed transfers before each director.
“Because twenty-seven million dollars connected to your IPO may have been financed through unauthorized transfers carrying forged approvals.”
Chaos followed.
Richard accused Serena of sabotaging the company.
Serena never raised her voice.
“I am asking for an independent investigation.”
“Three weeks before an IPO?”
“If three weeks can destroy Sentinel, the problem isn't the investigation.”
One director asked Richard whether Blue Meridian was affiliated with Chloe.
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Malcolm called for a vote.
The board established an independent special committee and temporarily removed Richard from decisions involving the IPO’s financing disclosures.
Not from the company.
Not yet.
But for a man like Richard, losing even an inch of authority felt like amputation.
He followed Serena into the corridor.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
“You’re destroying everything we built.”
Serena stopped.
“We built it?”
Richard stared at her.
“Interesting choice of words.”
She walked away.
Chloe was waiting outside the building.
Not for Richard.
For Serena.
“I need to talk.”
“No.”
“Your lawyer can be there.”
Serena stopped.
Thirty minutes later they sat inside Eleanor’s conference room.
Chloe looked nothing like the woman at the gala.
No gold gown.
No diamonds.
No theatrical smile.
She placed the Tears of the Ocean on the table.
Serena stared at it.
“Why?”
“Because it was never mine.”
“Richard gave it to you.”
Chloe laughed bitterly.
“Richard gave me whatever he thought would keep me obedient.”
Serena did not touch the necklace.
“What do you want?”
“Protection.”
“From whom?”
“My father.”
The story Chloe told was uglier than Serena expected.
Victor Davenport had used his daughter for years as a social doorway into rooms that no longer welcomed him.
Chloe cultivated investors, executives, heirs.
Victor collected information.
Richard had been a target.
The affair had not originally been part of the plan.
“But you continued it,” Serena said.
“Yes.”
“Knowing he was married.”
“Yes.”
Chloe did not excuse herself.
“I wanted what you had.”
Serena almost laughed.
“You wanted Richard?”
“No.”
Chloe looked around the beautiful room.
“I wanted to walk into places where everyone knew my name and nobody remembered my father’s scandals. I thought Richard could give me that.”
“And the necklace?”
“I knew whose it was.”
That hurt.
“I wore it anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Chloe’s eyes filled, but Serena remained unmoved.
“Because I wanted you to see me.”
“Well, I did.”
Chloe nodded.
“And now I know what it cost.”
She pushed a flash drive across the table.
“What’s this?”
“Everything.”
Emails.
Bank instructions.
Recordings.
Victor’s demands.
Richard’s responses.
And proof that Richard knew about several transfers.
But the most explosive recording involved neither Richard nor Chloe.
Victor Davenport spoke with another man.
A man Serena recognized immediately.
Malcolm Pierce.
Sentinel’s chairman.
On the recording, Malcolm said:
“When Sterling falls, Serena gets blamed for the unauthorized accounts. The board replaces him. We acquire Sentinel’s core patents at distressed value.”
Serena went still.
Richard had betrayed her marriage.
Chloe had helped humiliate her.
But Malcolm and Victor were planning to destroy the company itself.
And frame Serena.
Eleanor asked, “Why give us this?”
Chloe looked at Serena.
“Because my father told me yesterday that if this collapses, I’m expendable too.”
Serena studied her.
“You expect forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Chloe nodded.
“I expect a lawyer.”
For the first time, Serena reached for the necklace.
The sapphire felt cold against her palm.
Her grandmother’s necklace had returned.
But Serena felt no victory.
Only clarity.
She looked at Chloe.
“You’re going to tell the truth.”
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
“That could destroy Richard.”
Serena’s face did not change.
“Richard made his choices.”
“And my father?”
“He made his.”
Chloe swallowed.
“What happens to me?”
Serena slid the flash drive toward Eleanor.
“That depends on what you do next.”
Outside, Chloe paused.
“Serena?”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
Serena looked at her for a long moment.
“I believe you’re sorry now.”
It was not forgiveness.
But it was the truth.
That evening Serena received a message from Richard.
I know Malcolm is involved. Meet me. Please.
She stared at the word.
Please.
May you like
Richard Sterling had finally learned it.
Twelve years too late.
