Chapter 5 - THE FIANCÉE'S PUBLIC EXECUTION

Saturday arrived beneath a gray Boston sky.

The Falcone mansion glittered with white roses, crystal chandeliers, and gold decorations. Luxury cars filled the circular driveway while guests stepped onto the red carpet.

Three hundred people had gathered to witness the marriage that would unite two powerful families.

Most believed they were attending the beginning of a dynasty.

Casper knew he was walking into a battlefield.

Willow stood inside a small room behind the ballroom, dressed in her usual black uniform. She had insisted on returning to work after Winnie's condition stabilized.

She could not afford to become the reason Casper's wedding collapsed.

Prudence had tried to persuade her to stay away.

"You don't owe this family another hour," the older woman said.

Willow fastened her cuffs.

"I owe myself the chance to understand what's happening."

Prudence studied her.

"Be careful. I have worked here for thirty years. I've never seen Mr. Falcone look at anyone the way he looked at you yesterday."

Willow shook her head.

"He was helping my sister."

"Perhaps."

Prudence lowered her voice.

"But help and interest are not always the same thing."

Before Willow could answer, a sharp knock sounded at the door.

A security officer stood outside.

"Mr. Falcone wants you in the east corridor."

Willow followed him.

Casper was waiting beside a tall window, dressed in a black tuxedo. His face appeared carved from stone.

"You shouldn't be here," he said.

"I came to finish my work."

"Your sister is safe. The private medical team is with her, and Esther is recovering."

Relief softened Willow's expression.

"Thank you."

Casper looked away.

"There's something I need you to do."

He handed her a sealed envelope.

"Keep this. If anything happens to me, give it to the police."

Willow stared at him.

"What is it?"

"Evidence."

"Against Miss Vance?"

"Against several people."

She held the envelope as if it weighed far more than paper.

"Why are you giving it to me?"

"Because everyone in this house has a reason to betray me. You don't."

Willow swallowed.

"You barely know me."

"Perhaps that's why."

He turned toward the ballroom.

"Stay near the west entrance. If I call your name, come to me. Otherwise, don't move."

Willow nodded.

At noon, the ceremony began.

Cordelia entered wearing an ivory gown decorated with hand-sewn pearls. She walked beneath the chandeliers with a smile that convinced nearly every guest she was genuinely in love.

Casper stood at the altar.

He looked magnificent and utterly alone.

The officiant began the ceremony.

Cordelia reached for Casper's hand.

He allowed her to take it.

Then the officiant asked whether either party had a reason the marriage should not proceed.

Cordelia released Casper.

"I do."

A murmur passed through the ballroom.

She turned toward the guests.

"I'm afraid there is something you all deserve to know about the man I'm supposed to marry."

Casper's expression did not change.

Cordelia lifted a remote control.

The large screen behind the altar flickered to life.

A series of financial records appeared.

Bank transfers. Port schedules. Photographs of men meeting in private.

Then a document bearing Casper's signature filled the screen.

It authorized a shipment that had disappeared three months earlier.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Cordelia's eyes shone with triumph.

"For years, Casper Falcone has pretended to be a respectable businessman. Today, I can prove that his empire was built on corruption, theft, and the destruction of innocent lives."

Casper looked at the screen.

The document was genuine.

But the signature had been copied from an older authorization.

The shipment number had been altered.

Someone had assembled the evidence carefully enough to deceive anyone who didn't know the system.

Cordelia continued.

"I intended to marry this man because I believed he was worthy of my family's trust. I now understand that I would have been signing away my future to a criminal."

August rose from his seat.

"Turn that screen off!"

Cordelia ignored him.

"There's more."

A photograph appeared.

Isabella Falcone stood outside a hospital, holding the hand of a young woman.

The woman was Willow's mother.

Willow felt the blood drain from her face.

The next photograph showed a hospital room.

A newborn baby lay inside a clear bassinet.

The caption read:

The child Isabella Falcone paid to keep hidden.

The room erupted.

Willow stepped backward.

"No," she whispered.

She had never seen the photograph before.

She had never known her mother had been connected to the Falcones.

Cordelia turned toward her.

"And here is the maid who has been hiding in this mansion for six years."

Every face turned toward Willow.

Cordelia smiled.

"Tell them, sweetheart. Tell them why Isabella Falcone paid your mother's medical bills."

Willow could not speak.

Casper stepped away from the altar.

"Enough."

Cordelia laughed.

"Why? Because you know the truth?"

Casper faced the guests.

"The documents displayed here have been altered. An investigation is already underway."

"You expect them to believe you?"

"No."

His voice carried through the ballroom.

"I expect them to look at the evidence before deciding what to believe."

He signaled to Marlon.

The screen changed.

This time, security footage showed Cordelia entering a restricted port office and meeting a man connected to the Holloways.

Then came recordings of financial transfers from a shell company into an account controlled by Cordelia.

The guests fell silent.

Cordelia's smile disappeared.

"Those recordings are fabricated!"

"Are they?" Casper asked.

He stepped closer.

"You sold shipment schedules to my enemies. You arranged the theft of documents from my office. And you intended to use this marriage to gain control of the Eastern Port System."

Cordelia's face twisted.

"You were never supposed to find out."

The confession escaped before she could stop herself.

Casper stared at her.

"Thank you."

She realized her mistake.

For the first time that afternoon, fear appeared in her eyes.

Then she looked toward Willow.

"Do you really believe he cares about you? You're nothing but a convenient distraction. Ask him why his mother paid for your sister's treatment."

Casper turned toward Willow.

He had no answer.

Cordelia seized the microphone.

"Your mother wasn't just a servant, Willow. She was involved with the Falcone family. And Isabella died because she tried to expose what August had done."

August rose so quickly that his cane struck the floor.

"That's enough!"

Cordelia smiled again.

"Ask your uncle why the original hospital file disappeared."

Before Casper could respond, the ballroom doors burst open.

Two men entered with weapons drawn.

One pointed toward Casper.

The other seized Cordelia by the arm.

"Nobody move!"

Guests screamed and scattered.

Casper lunged toward Willow.

He reached her just as a gunshot shattered the chandelier above them.

Glass rained across the marble.

Casper pulled Willow against him and covered her head.

Then he heard another shot.

Marlon collapsed beside the altar.

May you like

And as the ballroom plunged into darkness, a voice from the entrance shouted the words that turned the entire wedding into a nightmare.

"August Falcone, the woman you buried twenty-four years ago is alive."
