Chapter 8 - THE INHERITANCE SHE NEVER KNEW SHE OWNED

I couldn't understand what I was looking at.

“My name?”

Oliver nodded.

“Your mother established a trust in your name before she died.”

My father took the document.

He read it slowly, his fingers trembling.

“This can't be right.”

Camila laughed.

“Oh, it is very right.”

I turned toward her.

“What did my mother give me?”

“Something you were never supposed to find.”

“Tell me.”

She stepped closer.

“Your mother knew the Hartford family would eventually become powerful. She wanted to make sure you controlled something that nobody could take away from you.”

Daniel examined the document.

“The trust holds shares in several private companies.”

My father looked up.

“How many?”

Daniel checked the attached schedule.

“Twenty-three percent of the original Hartford Family Foundation's investment portfolio.”

My father stared at him.

“That portfolio was dissolved years ago.”

“No,” Daniel replied. “The assets were transferred into a separate holding structure.”

Camila's smile returned.

“Exactly.”

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

“It means,” Daniel explained carefully, “that your mother may have left you control of a substantial financial interest. We need to verify the current ownership and trace the assets.”

“How substantial?”

He looked at the final page.

“Potentially hundreds of millions.”

I felt dizzy.

I had spent a year being called a gold digger by a woman who apparently knew I had been the beneficiary of a fortune all along.

But that wasn't the worst part.

My father's expression had become almost frightened.

“Camila,” he said. “Where did Richard get the original documents?”

She shrugged.

“Ask your daughter.”

“Stop playing games.”

Camila's voice suddenly lost its sweetness.

“Your wife was smarter than you, Jonathan. She knew you would eventually destroy everything you touched.”

My father stepped forward.

“Don't speak about her.”

“She trusted me.”

“You stole from her.”

“I protected what she built.”

“By moving money through shell companies?”

Camila smiled.

“Your wife knew exactly what she was signing.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Are you saying my mother knew about the transfers?”

Camila looked at me.

“Your mother wanted to move the money before Richard could take it. She signed the original agreement, but she never completed the final transfer.”

“Why?”

“Because she changed her mind.”

“Then why does the document have my name?”

Camila's eyes shifted toward Oliver.

He noticed.

“Mom?”

She said nothing.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you know?”

Oliver shook his head.

“No. I swear.”

Daniel examined the document again.

“There is a problem.”

“What?”

“The transfer agreement includes a condition. The trust cannot be fully activated until Elizabeth receives a sealed letter from the original trustee.”

“Who is the trustee?”

Daniel turned the final page.

“Richard Vale.”

My father stepped back.

“He's been dead for twelve years.”

Oliver looked at him.

“No. He's alive.”

Camila suddenly lunged toward the folder.

Daniel pulled it away.

“Don't touch that.”

For a brief moment, the room descended into chaos.

Camila screamed for security.

Oliver grabbed my arm and moved me away from the desk.

Then the office lights went out.

Someone shouted.

A door slammed.

When the emergency lights came on, Camila was gone.

So was the original transfer agreement.

Daniel immediately called the police.

Oliver looked at me.

“I know where she'll go.”

“Where?”

He swallowed.

“To the old Hartford estate.”

My father's face changed.

“That property was sold after your mother's death.”

Oliver shook his head.

“Not all of it.”

He looked at me.

“There's a locked room beneath the east wing. My mother told me never to go near it.”

I remembered the final line in my mother's journal.

Make sure Elizabeth never signs the original transfer agreement.

I finally understood why.

May you like

The document wasn't simply an inheritance.

It was the key to something my mother had spent her final days trying to hide.
