Chapter 7 - When Trust Was Tested

Alaric became different after Sabine's call.
Not cruel.
Not cold.
Controlled.
Too controlled.
Zoe recognized it because she had once behaved exactly the same way during hospital emergencies.
Feeling could wait.
The problem came when Alaric decided Zoe should leave the mansion.
“No.”
They stood in his study.
“Zoe.”
“You don't get to do this.”
“Emil knows Daniel talked.”
“And?”
“And whoever searched your room may still be here.”
“So you fire them.”
“I don't know who it is.”
“Then I'm safer knowing the danger exists than being moved somewhere I don't know.”
Alaric's jaw tightened.
“I can put you somewhere secure.”
There it was.
The sentence she had feared.
Put you somewhere.
Zoe stepped back.
Alaric saw the change immediately.
But he was afraid too.
Fear made even careful people stupid.
“This isn't a negotiation.”
Silence.
The second the words left his mouth, regret appeared.
Zoe's face went still.
“Then we're done talking.”
“Zoe.”
She walked out.
Alaric did not follow.
That saved them.
Barely.
She packed a bag and moved upstairs to Maggie's room for the night.
At 11:00, someone knocked.
“Who?”
“Alaric.”
She almost ignored him.
Then opened the door.
He remained in the hallway.
“I was wrong.”
No justification.
No qualification.
Zoe folded her arms.
“Yes.”
“I was frightened.”
“Yes.”
“I turned fear into authority.”
“Yes.”
His mouth twitched.
“You could make this slightly less painful.”
“No.”
“Fair.”
She wanted to remain angry.
Unfortunately, she loved him a little.
That realization arrived without permission.
It scared her more than Emil.
Alaric continued.
“You decide whether you stay. If you leave, security is available if you want it. If you stay, I'll explain everything we know.”
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“Even the ugly parts?”
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Especially those.”
Zoe let him in.
For 2 hours, Alaric told her about the Ferrante family.
His father had built legitimate waterfront businesses beside relationships with men who did not always operate legally.
After his father's death, Alaric inherited both.
He had spent 12 years untangling them.
Some he succeeded in removing.
Others remained.
He did not pretend innocence.
He also did not romanticize what his name represented.
“I don't want you to discover something later and think I lied by omission.”
Zoe appreciated that more than absolution.
“You've hurt people?”
“Yes.”
“Ordered people hurt?”
A long silence.
“Yes.”
Zoe looked down.
This was not the soft version of Alaric she saw in kitchens.
Both men existed.
Could she love one without pretending the other did not?
“I need time.”
“You have it.”
He stood.
At the door, Zoe stopped him.
“I'm staying.”
Relief crossed his face.
“But not because you want me to.”
“I understand.”
“And we're not okay yet.”
“I understand that too.”
The next morning, Maggie disappeared.
Her car remained in the garage.
Her phone sat on the pantry counter.
For the first time, Alaric truly lost composure.
Security footage showed Maggie entering the service corridor at 6:14.
At 6:17, a maintenance van left through the north gate.
Authorized electronically.
The authorization belonged to Iris.
Iris was found crying in the laundry room.
“I didn't do it.”
Alaric's security chief demanded her phone.
Zoe intervened.
“Stop.”
Everyone turned.
Iris was breathing too quickly.
Zoe crouched.
“Look at me.”
Iris did.
“Did you authorize the van?”
“No.”
“Does anyone know your access code?”
“No.”
“Did anyone borrow your badge?”
Iris froze.
“Emil.”
Alaric's expression hardened.
“At dinner. Weeks ago. He spilled wine on his jacket. Asked me to take it downstairs. My badge was in the pocket of my apron.”
Zoe's blood chilled.
Emil had been preparing this for weeks.
Then Zoe remembered something.
Maggie never carried her personal phone while working.
But she did wear a medical-alert pendant because of a heart rhythm problem.
Zoe told Alaric.
Within minutes, Sabine contacted the monitoring company.
The pendant had transmitted a location.
An abandoned Ferrante warehouse near Pawtucket.
Alaric reached for his coat.
Zoe caught his sleeve.
“Bring the police.”
His face hardened.
“Zoe—”
“Bring them.”
“He took Maggie.”
“And if you go there like whatever version of yourself Emil expects, he'll use it against you.”
Alaric stared at her.
This was the test.
Not whether he trusted Zoe when she agreed with him.
Whether he trusted her when every instinct in him demanded the opposite.
Finally, he called the state police liaison.
Maggie was found 47 minutes later.
Alive.
Furious.
Emil was gone.
Inside the warehouse, investigators found financial records, burner phones and copies of Harrowgate files.
Enough to expose years of fraud.
And taped beneath an old desk was one final envelope.
It contained a photograph of Zoe entering the Ferrante mansion.
Written across the back:
SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE THE FALL ONCE.

Below it:
SHE CAN DO IT AGAIN.
