Chapter 5 - The Real Target

Marcus Caldwell survived.
That was the first surprise.
The second came when investigators discovered he had not crashed while escaping.
Someone had forced him off the road.
Grant learned this at 5:12 the next morning while Maya stood barefoot in Daniel’s kitchen warming Owen’s bottle.
“He’s in surgery,” Grant said.
“So Marcus isn't the person behind everything?”
“He's involved.”
“But someone wanted him silent.”
Grant nodded.
Vanessa entered carrying her laptop.
“I found something.”
She opened a photograph.
Marcus stood outside a restaurant with an older man.
Maya did not recognize him.
Grant did.
“Victor Hale.”
Daniel, standing behind him, cursed quietly.
Maya waited.
Grant explained.
Victor Hale had been chairman of Kingsley Dynamics for eight years and one of Grant’s earliest investors. Publicly, he was a respected Seattle philanthropist.
Privately, Grant had spent months fighting him over a proposed sale.
“Hale wants to sell the battery division to Meridian Global.”
“For how much?”
“Eleven billion.”
Maya nearly dropped the bottle.
“Why won't you?”
“Because Meridian intends to move production overseas and eliminate roughly four thousand American jobs.”
Now the pattern became clearer.
Remove Grant.
Control the shares.
Approve the sale.
But something still bothered Maya.
“Why threaten Owen?”
Grant’s face hardened.
“Leverage.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Marcus never wanted Owen hurt.”
“You're defending him?” Grant asked.
“I’m telling you what he said. He told me to take Owen somewhere safe. When I refused, he told me to leave him with Grant.”
Maya understood first.
“Marcus was warning you.”
Vanessa nodded.
“He made it sound like a threat because he believed someone was listening.”
Daniel pulled up security records.
Within an hour, they discovered that three days before Vanessa disappeared, Marcus had tried to access Grant’s private calendar.
The request had been blocked.
But another executive had accessed it successfully.
Evelyn Hale.
Victor Hale’s daughter.
Kingsley Dynamics’ general counsel.
Grant stared at the screen.
“I've known Evelyn since college.”
Maya glanced at him.
“That sentence hasn't worked out very well for you lately.”
Daniel coughed to hide a laugh.
Grant gave Maya a look.
She raised one eyebrow.
Even Vanessa smiled.
The moment lasted three seconds.
Then the house alarm sounded.
Security moved instantly.
Grant reached for Owen.
Maya grabbed Ellie.
A guard entered.
“Vehicle at the gate.”
“Whose?”
The guard hesitated.
“Seattle Police.”
Grant frowned.
“Why would police know we're here?”
They didn't open the gate.
Two minutes later, the supposed police vehicle accelerated straight through it.
The collision shook the house.
“Upstairs!” someone shouted.
Grant grabbed Maya’s hand.
They ran.
A security officer moved Ellie and Vanessa into a reinforced bedroom.
Grant handed Owen to Maya.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Maya.”
“You're not walking downstairs toward armed strangers.”
“Then what do you suggest?”
She pointed toward the garage.
“Leaving.”
Grant stared at her.
Daniel appeared.
“She’s right. Boat dock.”
They escaped through the rear of the property.
Rain had returned.
Of course it had.
Grant carried Owen beneath his coat while Maya held Ellie’s hand.
The dock stretched into black water.
A security boat waited.
Behind them came the sound of breaking glass.
Ellie began crying.
Grant stopped.
He crouched before her.
“Ellie.”
She looked at him.
“Remember when you found me in the rain?”
She nodded.
“You weren't scared of me.”
“You looked sad.”
“I was terrified.”
That surprised her.
“Really?”
“Really. Brave doesn't mean you aren't scared.”
“What does it mean?”
“It means you keep moving while you're scared.”
Ellie wiped her eyes.
“Okay.”
She took his hand.
Maya watched them.
Something inside her shifted.
They reached the boat.
As it pulled away, flames suddenly appeared behind the windows of the house.
Someone had set it on fire.
Maya covered Ellie’s eyes.
Grant stared back at the burning building.
His face went cold.
Then Owen began crying.
Grant looked down.
The coldness disappeared instantly.
He kissed his son’s forehead.
Maya realized that was the difference between Grant and whoever was hunting him.
Grant had something he loved more than power.
People like Victor Hale viewed love as weakness.
Maya was beginning to understand it could also make someone dangerous.
By noon, federal agents arrested Evelyn Hale.
Victor was nowhere to be found.
But Evelyn made one statement before requesting an attorney.
“Ask Grant what happened to the original Kingsley patent.”
Grant went silent when Daniel repeated it.
Maya noticed.
“What patent?”
He didn't answer.
“Grant.”
His voice was low.
“The technology that made me rich wasn't originally mine.”
Maya stared at him.
“Whose was it?”
Grant looked toward Ellie.
May you like
Then back at Maya.
“Your husband's.”
