Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT HE RAN INTO THE FIRE

Claire heard Vincent before she saw him.

"Claire!"

Smoke filled the staircase.

She stood halfway down with one arm covering her mouth while the security agent tried to guide her toward the side exit.

Then Vincent appeared through the gray haze.

His jacket was gone.

Blood streaked one hand.

For a second, Claire forgot every terrible thing between them.

"Vincent?"

His face changed when he saw her.

Relief.

Raw and immediate.

He reached her, then stopped himself from grabbing her.

"Can you walk?"

"Yes."

"Baby?"

"Moving."

"Good."

A beam crashed somewhere behind them.

The security agent shouted.

"Move!"

They escaped through the library doors seconds before flames consumed the rear corridor.

Outside, Claire coughed violently.

Vincent dropped beside her.

Paramedics arrived.

Someone placed an oxygen mask over Claire's face.

Vincent refused treatment until her blood oxygen and the baby's heartbeat were checked.

Then Claire saw his hand.

Deeply cut.

"You're bleeding."

"It's nothing."

"Stop saying stupid things."

The paramedic almost smiled.

Vincent sat.

Claire watched while glass was removed from his palm.

She hated that she still cared.

Maybe love did not disappear simply because respect had been injured.

Maybe that was what made betrayal so painful.

At the hospital, investigators confirmed arson.

A vehicle had been captured on a neighbor's camera.

Registered to a Silver Meridian subsidiary.

Richard Hale was no longer a ghost.

He was a suspect.

By morning, Sloane Mercer walked into a Chicago police station.

Alive.

Bruised.

Terrified.

And ready to talk.

Her statement filled in the missing years.

Richard Hale and Edward Mercer had operated a kickback network through construction projects controlled by both families. Jonathan Bennett discovered it while auditing infrastructure contracts.

He threatened to expose them.

Edward wanted to negotiate.

Richard wanted Jonathan silenced.

According to Sloane, her father had spent the final years of his life terrified of Richard.

Before Edward died, he told Elliot everything.

Elliot did not report it.

He saw opportunity.

He contacted Richard.

Together, they planned to regain control of the Bennett assets Jonathan had protected.

But there was a problem.

Claire.

As long as Claire remained deeply involved with Hale Consolidated, she monitored contracts and licensing.

They needed her emotionally separated from Vincent.

They needed Vincent angry enough, distracted enough, and arrogant enough not to look closely at the paperwork.

Sloane had been the lever.

Claire listened to the recorded statement without moving.

Vincent sat at the opposite end of Rebecca's conference room.

Sloane's voice came through the speaker.

"I thought Vincent still loved me."

A pause.

"Elliot knew I wanted to believe it."

Claire looked at Vincent.

He stared at the floor.

Sloane continued.

"I told myself Claire was already leaving him. That I wasn't destroying anything. But I knew that email was fake."

Rebecca stopped the recording.

"There's more."

Claire rubbed her stomach.

"Continue."

The next section was worse.

Elliot had arranged the anniversary humiliation deliberately.

He knew a public separation would destabilize Hale Consolidated.

He expected Claire to react emotionally and immediately revoke Bennett licenses.

That would create a liquidity crisis.

Silver Meridian would then offer emergency financing.

When Hale defaulted, Richard and Elliot would seize controlling interests.

Claire almost admired the calculation.

Almost.

"They expected me to destroy Vincent," she said.

Rebecca nodded.

Vincent finally spoke.

"And I made it easy."

Nobody contradicted him.

Claire turned toward him.

"Why the public announcement?"

Vincent's face tightened.

He had asked himself the question every night since.

"Because I was angry."

"At me?"

"At what I thought you'd done."

"The fake divorce email."

"Yes."

"So you wanted to hurt me before I could hurt you."

He nodded.

Claire looked away.

There it was.

Not Sloane.

Not Elliot.

Not Richard.

The part that belonged only to Vincent.

Manipulation had created the lie.

Vincent had chosen cruelty.

"I need you to understand something," Claire said.

"I do."

"No. Let me finish."

He nodded.

"Whatever they manipulated, you still held that microphone."

His eyes lowered.

"You still looked at the mother of your child and decided humiliation was acceptable because you believed she had rejected you."

"I know."

"If we're ever going to have any kind of relationship after this, even as parents, you don't get to blame them for that."

"I won't."

Claire studied him.

"You mean that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Vincent looked at her.

"Because blaming them would mean I learned nothing."

That was the first moment Claire believed he might actually change.

Not enough for forgiveness.

But enough for possibility.

The federal investigation closed around Elliot and Richard.

Elliot was arrested attempting to cross into Canada using false identification.

Richard remained missing.

Then, during questioning, Elliot revealed something unexpected.

Richard wasn't running.

He was preparing one final move.

North Harbor.

The redevelopment project contained the original Bennett records Richard believed could connect him directly to Jonathan's death.

He intended to destroy them.

Vincent immediately called site security.

No answer.

Then Daniel called Claire.

"Mrs. Hale, there's something else."

"What?"

"Your father built a records vault beneath the old North Harbor administrative building."

Claire stood.

"What records?"

"I don't know. But I remember taking him there the week before he died."

Rebecca shook her head before Claire could speak.

"You're not going."

Claire reached for her coat.

"Those records could prove who killed my father."

"Police can retrieve them."

"If Richard knows the vault exists, they may not have time."

Vincent stood.

"She's right."

Claire glared at him.

"Don't encourage me."

"I'm not."

He took the coat from her hands.

"You're seven months pregnant. You're staying here."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Try stopping me."

Vincent stared at her.

Then sighed.

"I walked directly into that."

"Yes."

Ultimately, federal agents escorted Claire and Vincent to North Harbor.

Claire remained inside an armored vehicle while investigators entered the old building.

For twenty minutes, nothing happened.

Then gunshots cracked through the night.

Vincent reached for the door.

Claire grabbed his sleeve.

"No."

"My men—"

"Federal agents are inside."

Another shot.

Then an explosion.

Windows shattered outward from the second floor.

Claire screamed.

Flames illuminated the river.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Richard Hale's voice came through.

"Hello, Claire."

Vincent heard it.

His face went white.

Claire whispered, "Where are you?"

Richard laughed.

"Closer than your husband thinks."

A red laser point appeared against Vincent's chest.

Claire saw it.

Without thinking, she shoved him sideways.

The rifle fired.

May you like

Glass exploded.

And Claire fell.
