Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR ROSAEdward did not move.

Elena Martinez stood six feet away with a pistol pointed at his heart.
Thomas Bell watched from beside the doorway.
Vanessa remained seated, her hands folded calmly on the conference table.
“Put the gun down,” Edward said.
Elena's eyes flickered.
“I can't.”
“Yes, you can.”
Thomas smiled.
“Don't make this difficult, Edward.”
Edward ignored him.
He looked at Elena.
“Your mother has been searching for you for eleven years.”
Her jaw tightened.
“Don't talk about my mother.”
“She never gave up.”
“I said don't.”
Edward took a careful step forward.
Elena raised the weapon.
“Stop.”
He stopped.
Through the earpiece, Caroline whispered, “Daddy, listen to me. We have security footage. Elena's holding the gun, but Thomas has a second weapon under his jacket.”
Edward kept his gaze on Elena.
“Whatever they promised you, it isn't worth your life.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“They have my son.”
Edward felt the words strike him.
“Your son?”
Elena nodded almost imperceptibly.
“His name is Lucas. He's seven.”
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Elena.”
She flinched.
Edward understood.
The woman wasn't protecting the conspiracy.
She was protecting a child.
He lowered his voice.
“Where is Lucas?”
Thomas drew his pistol.
“Enough.”
At that exact moment, the lights went out.
The room plunged into darkness.
A fire alarm sounded.
Daniel's voice came through Edward's earpiece.
“Emergency power interruption. You've got ninety seconds.”
Edward dropped beneath the table.
A gunshot shattered the glass wall behind him.
Someone screamed.
Then Elena grabbed his arm.
“This way.”
She pulled him through a service door.
They ran down a narrow corridor illuminated by red emergency lights.
Edward stumbled.
Elena caught him.
“Keep moving.”
“Where's Emma?”
“Thirty-first floor.”
“Lucas?”
Elena's expression twisted.
“I don't know.”
They reached a stairwell.
Footsteps thundered behind them.
Thomas shouted from the corridor.
“Elena! You know what happens if you run!”
She froze.
Edward grabbed her hand.
“Your mother is outside.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
“She came for you.”
For a moment, Elena looked like a little girl hearing something impossible.
Then she whispered, “Mom?”
Edward nodded.
Elena began crying.
But there was no time.
They hurried down the stairs.
On the thirty-first floor, Daniel had remotely unlocked the east conference wing.
Edward pushed through the door.
At the far end of the corridor stood a room marked PRIVATE MEETING SUITE.
He recognized the door.
He had approved its installation twenty years earlier.
Elena entered a code.
The lock clicked.
Inside, Emma sat beside a table.
Her wrists were bound with plastic restraints.
She looked up.
“Grandpa?”
Edward stopped.
The word hit him harder than any accusation or financial loss.
Grandpa.
He had never heard it spoken to him before.
He crossed the room.
“I'm here, sweetheart.”
Emma began sobbing.
Edward knelt beside her and carefully freed her hands using a small safety cutter Elena retrieved from a drawer.
Caroline's voice trembled through the earpiece.
“Emma?”
The girl looked toward Edward.
“Mom?”
Caroline began crying.
“Baby, I'm coming.”
Edward helped Emma stand.
“Can you walk?”
She nodded.
“Then we're leaving.”
They reached the service stairs just as armed security officers appeared at the far end of the hallway.
Elena stepped forward.
“Stop!”
The officers hesitated.
They recognized her.
She raised her employee identification.
“Emergency evacuation. There's a fire in the executive suite.”
One officer spoke into his radio.
The other looked toward Emma.
“Who's the girl?”
“My niece,” Elena answered.
The lie came without hesitation.
The officers moved aside.
They descended five flights before reaching an unlocked maintenance corridor.
Daniel waited beside an elevator.
“Everybody inside.”
Edward guided Emma into the car.
Elena followed.
The doors closed.
For ten seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel pressed the emergency stop.
The elevator halted between floors.
Edward turned sharply.
“What are you doing?”
Daniel removed his earpiece.
His face had gone pale.
“Someone intercepted the evacuation route.”
Elena stared at him.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at the security monitor.
A black SUV had pulled up outside the loading dock.
Three men emerged.
One held a photograph of Rosa.
“They're going after your mother.”
Elena's expression changed.
“Where is she?”
Daniel looked at Edward.
“In the service vehicle.”
Edward reached for his phone.
No signal.
Daniel restarted the elevator.
“We need to get out.”
Meanwhile, Rosa sat inside the parked van watching the building's security feeds.
Caroline was beside her.
When Emma's face appeared on the monitor, Caroline covered her mouth.
“My baby.”
Rosa smiled through tears.
“They found her.”
Then someone knocked on the driver's window.
Rosa turned.
A man wearing a security uniform stood outside.
“Ma'am, you need to move the vehicle.”
Rosa glanced at his badge.
Something was wrong.
The logo belonged to an old security company that had lost the Calloway Tower contract three years earlier.
She reached for the door lock.
Too late.
The rear window shattered.
A hand reached inside.
Caroline screamed.
Rosa grabbed her and pushed her toward the opposite door.
“Run!”
A man seized Rosa by the shoulder.
She struck him with a flashlight.
He cursed.
Another man opened the driver's door.
Rosa fought.
She kicked.
She screamed.
But there were three of them.
Caroline escaped through the passenger side and ran toward the building.
Rosa was dragged into the black SUV.
As the vehicle accelerated away, she saw Caroline disappear through the loading dock entrance.
Rosa closed her eyes.
At least Caroline was safe.
Then a familiar voice spoke beside her.
“Hello, Rosa.”
She turned.
Richard Sloan sat in the rear seat.
Alive.
Smiling.
“You've been a very difficult woman to find.”
Rosa stared at him.
“What do you want?”
He leaned closer.
“The same thing I've wanted for sixteen years.”
“The ledger?”
Sloan smiled.
“No.”
He removed a photograph from his jacket.
It showed a seven-year-old boy sitting on a swing.
Lucas.
Rosa's grandson.
Her breath caught.
Sloan tapped the photograph.
“Your daughter made a terrible mistake when she trusted us.”
Rosa's hands curled into fists.
“Where is he?”
Sloan's smile vanished.
“You'll find out when you tell me where Caroline hid the original documents.”
Rosa looked at him.
“I don't know.”
He sighed.
“Then perhaps your grandson can help you remember.”
Rosa lunged toward him.
A guard restrained her.
Sloan straightened his jacket.
“Careful. We wouldn't want anyone else in your family to disappear.”
The SUV crossed the causeway toward the mainland.
Behind them, Miami's lights shimmered across the water.
And inside Calloway Tower, Edward received a message on Daniel's phone.
A photograph of Rosa.
Her hands bound.
Her face bruised.
Below it was a single sentence.
YOU HAVE TWELVE HOURS TO TRADE THE LEDGER FOR HER LIFE.
Edward stared at the screen.
Then he looked at Caroline.
For sixteen years, Rosa had carried the weight of his family's secrets.
Now she was paying for them.
He handed Daniel the phone.
“Find out where that picture was taken.”
Daniel nodded.
Edward turned toward the city.
“And call the prosecutor.”
Caroline looked at him.
“Daddy?”
May you like
His expression hardened.
“We're done running.”
