Chapter 6 - The Mother Who Came Back From the Dead

Camille slapped Adrien.

The sound cracked through the kitchen.

Nobody stopped her.

"You don't get to say her name."

Adrien touched his cheek.

"I'm telling the truth."

"My mother died seventeen years ago."

"No. She disappeared."

Camille shook her head.

"I went to her funeral."

"Closed casket."

Her anger vanished.

Because he was right.

Evelyn Carter had supposedly died in a highway accident outside Richmond.

The body had been badly burned.

Identification came through dental records.

Camille had been seventeen.

She had never questioned it.

Mara took Adrien's phone.

"Where was this taken?"

"Washington."

"Who sent it?"

"My investigator."

Elijah watched him.

"You hired an investigator to follow your own father?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I realized somebody was manipulating me too."

Elijah gave a humorless laugh.

"Now you're the victim?"

"No."

Adrien's voice lowered.

"I knew exactly what I was doing to Camille."

Camille flinched.

"I studied her marriage. I learned what frustrated her. I made sure we met. I told her everything she wanted to hear."

He looked at Elijah.

"I wanted access to you."

Elijah stepped closer.

Adrien didn't retreat.

"But I didn't create the operation."

"Who did?"

"Evelyn."

Camille whispered, "Why?"

Adrien shook his head.

"She never told me."

Mara searched the phone.

Then she found an audio recording.

A woman's voice filled the kitchen.

Older.

Controlled.

But Camille recognized it immediately.

"Do not underestimate Elijah because he repairs machines. Solomon raised him specifically to survive without wealth."

Camille covered her mouth.

Her mother's voice continued.

"Separate him from Camille before probate. Emotional isolation matters more than legal separation."

Elijah looked toward Camille.

She was trembling.

The recording continued.

"If Camille refuses to leave, use the financial pressure. She has always been terrified of becoming poor."

Camille shut her eyes.

Adrien stopped the recording.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him with pure disgust.

"You knew she was my mother?"

"Not initially."

"When did you learn?"

"Three weeks ago."

"And you said nothing."

"I was afraid."

Elijah's eyes hardened.

"Of what?"

Adrien looked at him.

"Of her."

The answer sounded absurd until Adrien opened another file.

Photographs showed judges, developers, city officials, lobbyists.

"Your father controlled assets," Adrien said. "Evelyn controls people."

Mara went still.

"You mean the Carter network."

Adrien nodded.

Elijah looked at Mara.

"You know it?"

"Rumors."

"What rumors?"

"That a private influence network has spent decades steering municipal contracts along the East Coast."

Camille stared.

"My mother sold insurance."

"No," Mara said quietly. "Apparently she didn't."

By morning, the story became clearer.

Danielle Brooks—Elijah's mother—had been Malcolm Cole's younger sister.

That made Elijah and Adrien second cousins through a family line neither man had understood.

Evelyn had once worked for Solomon as a financial compliance analyst.

She discovered the true scale of his holdings.

Then she disappeared.

Not to escape Solomon.

To build a rival network.

The missing piece was motive.

They found it in Solomon's journals.

Evelyn believed essential infrastructure should never be controlled by one family.

But her solution was worse.

She wanted control transferred to a network she commanded.

And Camille had been part of the plan since childhood.

Not knowingly.

But strategically.

Elijah sat opposite Camille in the estate library.

"Your mother expected you to marry someone useful."

Camille laughed bitterly.

"Instead I married an HVAC technician."

"Apparently that was extremely useful."

Despite everything, Camille laughed.

Then cried.

Elijah handed her a tissue.

She looked at him.

"Why are you being kind to me?"

"Because cruelty won't fix anything."

"I left you."

"Yes."

"For him."

"Yes."

"I humiliated you."

"Yes."

She almost smiled through tears.

"You could occasionally lie."

"No."

That was the Elijah she had married.

The Elijah she had stopped appreciating.

The door opened.

Nia entered wearing dinosaur pajamas.

"Why Mommy crying?"

Camille wiped her face.

"Mommy made some mistakes."

Nia climbed into her lap.

"Did you break something?"

Camille looked at Elijah.

"Yes."

"Daddy fixes things."

Elijah's expression changed.

Camille hugged Nia.

"Some things Daddy shouldn't have to fix."

Nia considered this.

"I have tape."

Camille laughed through tears.

Later, Elijah received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Elijah Brooks."

A woman's voice responded.

"You're very much like your father."

Elijah stood.

"Evelyn."

Across the room, Camille froze.

"Put my daughter on."

Evelyn laughed softly.

"Which one?"

Camille grabbed the phone.

"You stay away from Nia."

"Camille."

Hearing her mother's voice directly almost destroyed her.

"You let me bury you."

"I gave you freedom."

"You abandoned me."

"I protected you."

"No. You used me."

Silence.

Then Evelyn said, "Come to the Halcyon Hotel tomorrow at noon."

"Why?"

"Because Solomon lied about the inheritance."

Elijah took the phone.

"How?"

"Sixty-eight billion isn't what he left you."

"What did he leave?"

Evelyn paused.

"The authority to dismantle the system that made it."

Then she added:

"And if you don't meet me tomorrow, every account attached to Brooks Meridian will be frozen before sunset."

The call ended.

Mara looked at Elijah.

"Can she do that?"

He watched her face.

That frightened him more than Evelyn's threat.

"Mara?"

May you like

She whispered:

"I don't know."
