Chapter 3 - Four Little Miracles

The champagne glass shattered before anyone spoke.
Jason stared at me.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the four children.
The entire garden seemed to go quiet in waves.
Patricia was the first person to move.
She hurried toward us, her expression caught somewhere between confusion and horror.
“Olivia?”
“Hello, Patricia.”
Her eyes dropped toward Noah, who was holding my finger.
Then Miles.
Then Oliver.
Then Theo.
Her lips parted.
“Whose children are these?”
Ethan stepped beside me.
“Ours.”
One word.
That was all it took.
Jason crossed the lawn so quickly Ashley had to call after him.
“What did he say?”
I looked at Jason.
For years, I had imagined this moment differently.
I had imagined anger.
Vindication.
Maybe even satisfaction.
Instead, I felt strangely calm.
“These are my sons.”
Jason actually laughed.
It wasn’t amusement.
It was disbelief.
“Your sons?”
“Yes.”
“All four?”
“All four.”
His eyes moved over their nearly identical faces.
“Quadruplets?”
Ethan nodded.
Jason looked at me again.
“That’s impossible.”
Something inside me went cold.
Not wounded.
Finished.
“Why?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
We both knew why.
Because Jason had built his entire justification for abandoning me around one supposed fact.
Olivia couldn’t have children.
Now four living contradictions were standing in his mother’s driveway.
Ashley approached slowly, one hand resting over her pregnant belly.
She was beautiful, polished, and suddenly very pale.
“Jason?”
He ignored her.
“When did this happen?”
I almost smiled.
“When people have babies, generally.”
“Olivia.”
“After our divorce.”
His jaw tightened.
“How long have you been married?”
“Almost two years.”
Patricia looked at Ethan.
“And you are?”
“Ethan Bennett.”
Recognition flashed across the face of an older woman nearby.
“Dr. Bennett?”
Ethan glanced toward her.
“Yes.”
“My sister saw you at Hillcrest.”
Jason frowned.
“What kind of doctor?”
Ethan’s hand settled gently against my back.
“Reproductive endocrinology.”
If silence could explode, that one did.
Ashley slowly turned toward Jason.
I saw something in her expression change.
“Wait.”
Jason looked at her.
“What?”
Ashley stared at Ethan.
“You’re a fertility specialist?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes moved to me.
Then back to Jason.
“Jason told me Olivia was infertile.”
There it was.
Publicly.
Exactly the humiliation Jason had planned for me, only now he was standing in its center.
I could have destroyed him.
I could have told everyone how he tracked my cycles.
How he blamed me.
How he refused testing.
But looking at Ashley, I suddenly realized something.
She wasn’t my enemy.
She was another woman who had been given Jason’s version of the truth.
So I simply said, “That’s what Jason believed.”
Ethan glanced at me.
He understood immediately.
He would not violate medical privacy or pretend to diagnose a man he had never treated.
Instead, he said calmly, “Infertility can involve either partner, both partners, or remain unexplained. A proper evaluation generally includes both.”
Ashley’s face drained.
She looked at Jason.
“You told me you were tested.”
Jason froze.
That was when I knew.
This wasn’t just about me anymore.
“Ashley,” Jason said quietly.
“You said you were tested after your divorce.”
“Ashley.”
“You said the doctors confirmed there was nothing wrong with you.”
Guests were beginning to pretend they weren’t listening.
They were terrible at it.
Ashley took one step backward.
“Did you lie to me?”
Jason’s mother intervened.
“This is neither the time nor place.”
Ashley looked at her.
“This is my baby shower.”
Exactly.
I almost felt sorry for her.
I turned to Ethan.
“We should leave.”
Jason’s head snapped toward me.
“You just got here.”
“We clearly arrived at a bad time.”
He stepped closer.
“No. You don’t walk in here with four children and some doctor and then leave.”
Some doctor.
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
I touched his arm.
He remained silent.
Jason looked at the boys again.
Something unsettling appeared in his face.
Calculation.
“When were they born?”
“Jason.”
“When?”
I stared at him.
“Eleven months ago.”
He did the math.
His expression changed.
“They were conceived after our divorce.”
“Yes.”
“How soon?”
“That is none of your business.”
He stared at me.
Then he said something so absurd I almost didn’t understand it.
“Were you seeing him before we separated?”
The garden went dead silent again.
Ethan stepped forward.
I stopped him.
“No.”
Jason scoffed.
“How convenient.”
And suddenly I understood what he was doing.
He needed a new story.
If I hadn’t been infertile, then I must have cheated.
Because Jason Carter could survive being cruel.
He could survive being arrogant.
What he could not survive was being wrong.
I walked toward him until only a few feet separated us.
“You left me.”
My voice was quiet.
“You served me divorce papers three days after telling me our marriage needed a break. You remarried within a year. You invited me here because you wanted me to stand in front of your pregnant wife while everyone remembered that I supposedly couldn’t give you children.”
His face hardened.
“Who told you that?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
I looked around at the people watching.
Then back at him.
“I didn't come here for revenge, Jason. I came because you spent years teaching me to be ashamed of something that was never proven to be wrong with me.”
I reached for Noah.
Ethan handed him over.
Noah immediately grabbed my necklace.
I smiled down at him.
“This is my life now.”
Then I looked at Jason.
“And you don’t get to rewrite it.”
For once, Jason Carter had nothing to say.
We turned to leave.
Then Ashley spoke.
“Olivia.”
I stopped.
She walked toward me.
Tears were forming in her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Jason stared at her.
“Ashley.”
She ignored him.
“I didn’t write that note.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“The note on your invitation. I didn’t write it.”
Slowly, everyone looked toward Jason.
Ashley’s voice shook.
“I didn’t even know he invited you until yesterday.”
Jason’s mother whispered his name.
But Ashley wasn’t finished.
She removed her hand from her belly.
“And there’s something else Jason hasn’t told anyone.”
Jason went white.
“Ashley, don't.”
She looked directly at me.
“The baby I'm carrying…”
May you like
Her voice cracked.
“…may not be Jason’s.”
