Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Marriage

Andrew had never looked out of place anywhere.

Until now.

His thousand-dollar shoes sank slightly into the soft Pennsylvania earth while Emma’s father stood on the porch in work boots.

Marcus Vale remained beside the SUV.

Caleb moved closer to Emma.

Andrew noticed.

His jaw tightened.

“So that’s him.”

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“The private jet.”

“Don’t.”

Andrew laughed without humor.

“You leave me and immediately fly away with Caleb Whitmore?”

“You kissed another woman in front of Manhattan.”

“And you were apparently already planning your exit with another man.”

Caleb took one step forward.

Emma raised her hand.

“No.”

Caleb stopped immediately.

Again, the difference struck her.

Andrew interpreted boundaries as challenges.

Caleb treated them as boundaries.

Emma walked down one porch step.

“You have five minutes.”

Andrew stared at her.

“You look tired.”

She almost laughed.

“That’s what you came to say?”

“I came because we’re being set up.”

Behind him, Marcus spoke.

“Andrew.”

Emma looked at Marcus.

He wore the same reassuring expression he had worn at her wedding.

“Emma, this has become unnecessarily ugly.”

“Unnecessarily?”

“Personal matters have spilled into business.”

“My husband’s company used my identity to move forty-eight million dollars.”

Marcus sighed.

“Allegedly.”

Rachel stepped from the doorway.

“Be careful, Mr. Vale.”

Marcus’s eyes changed.

Only slightly.

But Emma saw it.

He had not expected an attorney.

Rachel continued.

“My client will not discuss Weston Capital without counsel.”

Marcus smiled.

“Of course.”

Andrew looked confused.

That told Emma something.

Marcus had brought Andrew here without explaining everything.

“Why are you really here?” she asked.

Andrew’s anger slipped.

For one second, she saw fear.

“The board suspended me this morning.”

Emma stared.

“Pending investigation,” Marcus added.

Andrew turned toward him.

“You said temporary leave.”

“It is.”

Rachel smiled faintly.

“Interesting wording.”

Andrew looked back at Emma.

“I need you to sign a statement confirming that you authorized EWW Holdings.”

Silence.

There it was.

Emma almost admired the audacity.

“You drove three hours to ask me to confess to something I didn’t do?”

“It would stabilize the company.”

“And possibly send me to prison.”

“No one is going to prison.”

Rachel laughed once.

Marcus’s expression hardened.

Andrew stepped closer.

“I can protect you.”

Emma stared at the man she had married.

For years, she had believed Andrew was the most powerful person in every room.

Now she saw something different.

A frightened boy wearing an expensive suit, repeating words another man had placed in his mouth.

“Did you forge my signature?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize the transfers?”

“No.”

“Did you pay my obstetrician?”

Andrew hesitated.

Marcus turned toward him.

Emma caught it.

That hesitation mattered.

“Yes,” Andrew finally said.

Her throat tightened.

“Why?”

“I wanted to know the sex.”

“We agreed not to know.”

“I needed to know.”

“For Project Heir?”

Andrew’s face emptied.

Marcus went perfectly still.

Emma knew.

Lila had told the truth.

“What is Project Heir?”

Andrew looked at Marcus.

That was his mistake.

Rachel saw it.

Caleb saw it.

Emma certainly saw it.

Marcus smiled coldly.

“I think this conversation is finished.”

“No,” Emma said. “I think it just started.”

Marcus turned toward the SUV.

Andrew grabbed his arm.

“What is Project Heir?”

Marcus looked down at Andrew’s hand.

“Remove it.”

For the first time, Andrew did not.

“You told me the medical information was necessary for estate planning.”

“It was.”

“You called it Project Heir?”

Marcus’s silence answered him.

Andrew released his arm slowly.

Emma felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Marcus entered the SUV.

Before closing the door, he looked at Emma.

“You should consider carefully who benefits from frightening you.”

Emma held his gaze.

“I am.”

The SUV drove away without Andrew.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Robert said, “Well, that seems awkward.”

Caleb coughed to hide a laugh.

Even Rachel smiled.

Andrew did not.

He looked toward the empty road.

“He left me.”

Emma almost said, Now you know how it feels.

She stopped herself.

Andrew turned back.

“Emma, I didn’t know.”

“You knew enough.”

“I never stole that money.”

“Maybe not.”

His expression lifted slightly.

“But you cheated on me.”

It fell again.

“You humiliated me.”

“Emma—”

“You let your employees treat me like decoration. You shared my medical information without consent. You signed things and expected me to sign things because you assumed I would always obey.”

Andrew swallowed.

“That’s not a crime.”

“No.”

Emma rested a hand over her belly.

“It’s just why I stopped loving you.”

That hurt him.

She saw it.

For once, she did not rush to repair the wound.

Andrew looked at Caleb.

“Are you sleeping with him?”

Emma’s remaining sympathy disappeared.

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

Emma walked down the final step until she stood directly in front of Andrew.

“I am six months pregnant, terrified, facing possible federal scrutiny, and discovering that our child may have been used in a corporate conspiracy.”

She lowered her voice.

“And you are still worried another man might possess something you think belongs to you.”

Andrew stared.

Emma removed her wedding ring.

She had forgotten she was still wearing it.

She placed it in his palm.

“I don’t belong to you.”

Then she walked inside.

That night, Rachel received an encrypted email.

It contained Weston Capital internal records.

Transfers.

Medical payments.

Messages.

And one audio file.

Rachel played it.

Marcus Vale’s voice filled the farmhouse kitchen.

“Once Emma gives birth, we trigger the trust. Andrew will be finished within six months.”

A second voice answered.

A woman.

“What about Emma?”

Marcus laughed.

“She’ll sign whatever her husband puts in front of her.”

Emma recognized the woman’s voice.

And this time, it was not Lila.

May you like

It belonged to Andrew’s mother.

Victoria Weston.
