Chapter 9 - The Last Secret

Marcus Reed had served Adrian for eighteen years.
Adrian had never seen him cry.
Until that night.
“Samuel was corrupt,” Marcus said. “Hart owned him.”
Zara stood across the room.
“You killed your brother?”
“He came to me afterward.”
Marcus stared at his hands.
“He was drunk. Terrified. He said Hart had threatened his children.”
“So he murdered my father?”
“He said he had no choice.”
Zara's voice became ice.
“There is always a choice.”
Marcus nodded.
“I know.”
“What did you do?”
“I told him to confess.”
“And?”
“He pulled a gun.”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“I was faster.”
The official record showed Samuel Reed had died during a robbery.
Marcus had hidden the truth.
Not to protect himself.
To protect Samuel's children.
Zara wanted to hate him.
Part of her did.
Another part saw the unbearable symmetry.
Every person in this story had hidden something in the name of protecting someone else.
Every secret had produced another wound.
“No more,” she said.
Adrian looked at her.
“No more secrets.”
He nodded.
“No more.”
Marcus nodded too.
They now had enough evidence to expose Hart's old network.
But they needed proof connecting him directly to Thomas's death.
That proof came from the most unexpected place.
The red dress.
Graham called Zara the following morning.
“Do you remember what I whispered to you at the gala?”
She did.
He had said:
Someone is watching us. Laugh.
That was why she had laughed so freely.
Not because Graham was charming.
Because he had told her Adrian was staring at them with the jealous expression of a man reconsidering every bad decision of his life.
But Graham had also noticed Hart's former chief of staff watching Zara.
Security footage showed the man leaving the ballroom immediately after Adrian approached.
They found him in Indiana.
His name was Paul Danner.
And he had kept records.
Hart had ordered Thomas's death.
Samuel Reed had carried it out.
Victor Cross discovered the truth afterward and paid Richard Vale to keep silent because exposing Hart would have destroyed everyone connected to their network.
Cowardice.
Again.
Different men.
Same disease.
Federal prosecutors moved quickly once the evidence reached them.
Hart was arrested at his Lake Forest estate.
Cross Global was cleared of the recent laundering allegations after investigators traced the fraudulent transfers.
Evan surrendered voluntarily for his financial crimes and agreed to cooperate.
His attorney believed he would receive a reduced sentence.
Marcus also confessed his role in Samuel's death.
Adrian offered him every lawyer money could buy.
Marcus refused.
“For once,” he said, “I'm going to stop hiding from consequences.”
Three weeks later, Adrian returned home.
The townhouse was under renovation.
The fire had destroyed his office but spared most of the building.
Zara stood in the sitting room.
Two suitcases waited beside her.
Adrian stopped.
His face revealed nothing.
His eyes revealed everything.
“You're leaving.”
“For a while.”
He nodded.
He did not ask where.
Did not tell her to stay.
That almost made leaving harder.
Zara looked at him.
“You're not going to stop me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because loving you doesn't give me ownership of you.”
Her eyes filled.
Adrian continued.
“I want you to stay more than I've wanted almost anything.”
His voice roughened.
“But if I make you stay because I'm afraid of losing you, then I haven't learned anything.”
Zara wiped her cheek.
“Where will you go?”
“Seattle. Three months. Consulting project.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
“Good?”
“You loved consulting.”
A small smile.
“You remembered.”
“I remember everything.”
She walked toward him.
Stopped.
“I haven't forgiven you.”
“I know.”
“I don't know whether I can.”
“I know.”
“And I don't want promises.”
Adrian swallowed.
“What do you want?”
“Consistency.”
He nodded.
“I can do that.”
“We'll see.”
Zara kissed his cheek.
Then left.
Adrian did not chase her.

For ninety-two days, he did something much harder.
He changed without knowing whether she would ever come back.
