Chapter 8 - The Man Vivian Thought She Buried

Vivian was holding Rebecca when Daniel entered the hospital room.

She stopped breathing.

Her brother stood inside the doorway.

Alive.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Vivian whispered, “You idiot.”

Daniel laughed and cried simultaneously.

“I know.”

“You absolute idiot.”

She held out one arm.

Daniel crossed the room.

They embraced carefully around the baby.

Three years of grief collapsed in seconds.

Vivian hit his shoulder.

Then kissed his cheek.

Then hit him again.

“You let me bury you.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“I hate that sentence.”

Dominic stood quietly near the door.

Daniel noticed.

“You found her.”

“Yes.”

“Before Leo?”

“Barely.”

Daniel looked at the bruises on Vivian’s face.

His expression darkened.

“I should have come sooner.”

Vivian shook her head.

“No more.”

Both men looked at her.

“No more men standing around deciding which terrible thing is their fault.”

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

Daniel almost smiled.

“She always bossy?”

“Extremely.”

“I’m sitting right here.”

Rebecca made a tiny sound.

Everyone became silent.

Daniel approached his daughter.

His wife’s daughter.

He touched her cheek.

“Hi, Becca.”

His voice broke.

Vivian watched him.

“I carried her for you.”

Daniel looked at his sister.

“You carried her because you're the bravest person I know.”

Vivian cried again.

Later, Daniel explained everything.

He had spent three years collecting evidence against Anthony.

He discovered Leo’s involvement only recently.

When Leo began threatening Vivian, Daniel tried to intervene anonymously.

But revealing himself would have exposed her pregnancy and the baby.

“So you watched?”

Vivian asked.

The hurt in her voice was unmistakable.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“That wasn't protection.”

“I know.”

“You don't get to disappear again.”

“I won't.”

Dominic understood something while watching them.

Protection without trust could become another kind of prison.

It was a lesson his father never learned.

Neither had Dominic.

Until Vivian.

Federal authorities now possessed enough evidence to dismantle Anthony and Leo’s network.

Unfortunately, Vivian’s shadow ledger also contained records implicating the Russo Syndicate.

Dominic faced a choice.

Destroy the remaining evidence and preserve his empire.

Or use it to dismantle the criminal structure his family had built over generations.

That night, he stood alone beside Vivian’s hospital window.

“What happens now?” she asked.

“I don't know.”

“That's probably the first time you've ever said that.”

“It may be.”

She studied him.

“What do you want?”

Nobody asked Dominic that.

They asked what he planned.

What he demanded.

What he would do.

Never what he wanted.

Dominic looked at Rebecca sleeping.

“A life where she never has to know what I was.”

Vivian’s eyes softened.

“That sounds expensive.”

“I can afford it.”

“I meant emotionally.”

“Oh.”

She smiled.

“Money isn't your solution to everything.”

“It solves an impressive percentage.”

Vivian laughed.

Dominic became serious.

“I’m giving the federal investigators everything.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Dominic, that could put you in prison.”

“I know.”

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

She stared.

“Why?”

“Because if I protect the system that created Leo and Anthony, there will eventually be another Leo and another Anthony.”

He looked at the baby.

“And I’m tired.”

Vivian remembered the first time she truly saw him as human.

Not tonight.

Not when he held Rebecca.

It was hidden inside a thought she had never spoken.

Dominic Russo looked tired.

She reached for his hand.

“Then stop.”

It sounded impossibly simple.

Dominic intertwined his fingers with hers.

The next morning, he walked into the federal building voluntarily.

He brought attorneys.

Records.

Names.

Accounts.

He spent eleven hours talking.

When he returned, Vivian was waiting.

“What happened?”

“I made a deal.”

His legitimate company would survive under independent oversight.

His criminal holdings would be surrendered.

Several charges remained possible, but cooperation and evidence against Anthony’s network substantially changed the case.

Dominic sat beside her.

“I may lose almost everything.”

Vivian looked around the private hospital suite.

“You'll survive without six penthouses.”

“Five.”

“Tragic.”

He smiled.

Then she squeezed his hand.

“You didn't lose everything.”

May you like

Dominic looked at her.

For once, he believed her.
