Chapter 7 - THE HOLLOW CROWNThe target was not Pier 17.

It was Moretti Tower.

Hundreds of millions in legitimate assets were controlled from servers beneath Dante’s Manhattan headquarters. With Evelyn’s encryption key, Luca could seize the hidden accounts and simultaneously frame Dante for decades of financial crimes.

“He doesn’t want your money,” Sonia realized.

“He wants my name.”

Dante looked at her.

“And when the authorities come?”

“He disappears again while you take the fall.”

Salvatore nodded.

“That’s Luca.”

Sonia studied the financial records.

Something bothered her.

“If he needs my chip, why kidnap Emma before getting it?”

Nobody answered.

Then Sonia understood.

“He already has a copy.”

Dante frowned.

“How?”

“Vinnie.”

She remembered the restaurant.

Her locker.

Her purse.

The necklace she occasionally removed when changing uniforms.

Vinnie had photographed or scanned it.

The kidnapping was not about the chip.

It was about Dante.

“Pier 17 is meant to kill you.”

Dante immediately ordered his people away from the pier.

Sonia grabbed his arm.

“But Emma and Dad?”

“We find them another way.”

Sonia remembered Emma’s smartwatch.

A nursing-school gift.

It shared location data with Sonia’s phone.

They tracked it.

Queens.

An abandoned private clinic.

Dante wanted Sonia to stay behind.

She refused.

Twenty minutes later, they entered the clinic through a service corridor.

No dramatic assault.

No army.

Dante brought only three trusted men.

They found Robert first.

Alive.

Emma was beside him.

But she was not restrained.

Sonia stopped.

“Emma?”

Her sister turned.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

A man stepped from the shadows.

Luca Moretti.

He looked remarkably like Dante.

Same height.

Same blue eyes.

But Luca’s face carried a long scar from temple to jaw.

“Finally,” Luca said.

Dante raised his weapon.

Luca pressed a pistol against Emma’s side.

“Don’t.”

Sonia stared at her sister.

“You helped him?”

Emma cried.

“Not like this.”

Luca smiled.

“Emma and I met eight months ago.”

Emma explained through tears.

A handsome donor had appeared at NYU’s nursing program.

He called himself Lucas Marin.

He paid part of her tuition.

He listened when she spoke about Robert’s cancer.

He became her friend.

Then her boyfriend.

Sonia felt sick.

“You used her.”

Luca’s expression changed.

“No.”

“Then let her go.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because she knows too much.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Luca looked at Dante.

“You always got everything.”

“Our father thought you were reckless.”

“He thought you were better.”

“So you murdered innocent people?”

“I built what should have been mine.”

“You killed Evelyn.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“She made a choice.”

Sonia lunged.

Dante caught her before Luca could react.

“You murdered my mother!”

Luca looked at her without apology.

“She was going to destroy us.”

“You mean expose you.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was more horrifying than denial.

Then Robert spoke weakly from the chair.

“You never understood Evelyn.”

Luca looked at him.

Robert smiled.

“She knew you would come for the key.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The accounts aren’t yours.”

Luca’s confidence faltered.

Sonia understood before he did.

Her mother had built a trap.

The moment both halves of the encryption key were used, every hidden account automatically transmitted its records to multiple federal investigators.

Luca stared at Sonia.

“You’re lying.”

Dante’s phone buzzed.

Then Luca’s.

Then every phone in the room.

News alerts.

Financial investigations.

Warrants.

Account freezes.

Luca’s empire had just become evidence.

His face transformed.

“You.”

He pointed the gun at Sonia.

Emma moved first.

She slammed Luca’s arm sideways.

The gun fired.

Dante tackled his brother.

The two crashed through a glass partition.

Sonia grabbed Emma.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Across the room, the brothers fought with seventeen years of hatred behind every blow.

Luca reached for the gun.

Dante reached it first.

He aimed.

Luca froze.

“Do it,” Luca whispered.

Dante’s finger tightened.

Then Sonia said his name.

Only once.

“Dante.”

He looked at her.

And lowered the gun.

“No.”

Luca laughed.

“Weak.”

Dante shook his head.

“No. Finished.”

Police sirens approached.

But Luca smiled.

“You think this is finished?”

He pulled a small remote from his pocket.

Dante’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

May you like

Luca pressed the button.

Somewhere beneath them, an explosive detonated.
