Chapter 1 - The Empty Crib

By the time Dante Moretti understood that his wife had left him, she had already been gone for three days.
He discovered it at 11:47 on a Sunday night, standing in the doorway of his newborn son's nursery with a designer shopping bag meant for another woman still hanging from his hand.
The crib was empty.
Not messy.
Not abandoned in panic.
Empty.
That was what frightened him.
“Elena?”
His voice carried through the second floor of the mansion.
No answer.
Dante stepped farther into the nursery.
The night-light was still glowing beneath the window. The white rocking chair Elena had insisted on buying stood in its usual place. A soft blue blanket hung over one arm.
But the baby monitor was gone.
Half the diapers were gone.
The bottles were gone.
The portable bassinet was gone.
And most of the newborn clothes had vanished from the drawers.
Dante slowly pulled out his phone.
He called the head of his security detail.
Caleb Ross answered immediately.
“Mr. Moretti.”
“Where is my wife?”
A pause.
Dante's voice dropped.
“And where is my son?”
Another pause.
Longer this time.
“Mrs. Moretti left the residence Friday morning, sir.”
Dante looked at the empty crib.
Friday.
He had left Thursday evening.
It was now Sunday.
“She left three days ago?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And nobody thought to tell me?”
Caleb chose his next words carefully.
“You instructed us not to contact you unless there was a security emergency.”
Dante remembered.
He had given the order from the back seat of his Bentley while driving to a private resort outside Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
No calls from the house.
No interruptions.
No business unless someone was bleeding, arrested, or dead.
Vanessa Shaw had been sitting beside him when he said it.
At the time, Dante had thought four days away from Chicago would feel like freedom.
Now the order sounded different inside an empty nursery.
“My wife leaving with my newborn son didn't qualify as an emergency?”
“There was no indication of danger, sir. Mrs. Moretti left voluntarily. She appeared calm. No one forced her to go.”
Dante stared at the blanket.
Calm.
He almost wished Caleb had said Elena had been screaming.
Anger would have made sense.
Broken picture frames would have made sense.
A smashed vase.
A ripped wedding photograph.
Something.
But Elena had not destroyed anything.
She had simply taken what their son needed and disappeared.
“Who drove her?”
“We're checking.”
“Check faster.”
Dante ended the call.
He walked into Elena's dressing room expecting devastation.
Instead, most of her clothes remained.
Her gowns hung exactly where they always had.
The diamond bracelet Dante had bought for their anniversary sat inside its velvet case.
The black credit card connected to one of his private accounts was on the vanity.
Her house keys were beside it.
He went downstairs.
In the garage, the Range Rover he had bought Elena after she became pregnant was still parked in its usual spot.
Dante stood beside it for several seconds.
Then something inside him tightened.
She hadn't taken his car.
She hadn't taken his money.
She hadn't even taken the jewelry he had given her.
Elena had left in a way designed to make one thing absolutely clear.
She did not want to owe him for leaving.
Twenty minutes later, Dante stood in the mansion's security office watching footage from Friday morning.
The screen showed Elena stepping out of the house at 8:12 a.m.
Their two-week-old son, Noah, was strapped to her chest.
A small suitcase rolled behind her.
A diaper bag hung from her shoulder.
Dante leaned closer.
She didn't cry.
She didn't hesitate.
She stopped only to adjust the blanket around Noah before walking toward the gate.
A basic gray rental sedan was waiting outside.
Elena loaded the suitcase herself.
She secured Noah in his car seat herself.
Then she got in.
She never looked back at the mansion.

“Who rented the car?” Dante asked.
