Chapter 5 - The Signature

Harrison denied everything.

His lawyers called the signatures authentic.

Arthur hired a forensic document examiner.

The conclusion arrived four days later.

Six signatures showed strong evidence of simulation.

One had been electronically transferred from an older document.

Evelyn read the report twice.

Then she went to the bathroom and threw up.

Julian found her afterward sitting on the floor of her office.

He crouched several feet away.

He did not touch her.

“What happened?”

She handed him the report.

His expression hardened.

“I'll destroy him.”

“No.”

Julian looked up.

“This isn't yours to destroy.”

He stared at her for a moment.

Then nodded.

“What do you need?”

That question nearly broke her.

Not What should I do?

Not Let me handle it.

What did she need?

“A lawyer who specializes in financial fraud.”

“I know three.”

“Give Arthur their numbers.”

“Done.”

“And coffee.”

Julian stood.

“That I can personally accomplish.”

The investigation uncovered a pattern.

Years earlier, when Bennett Cross needed rapid financing, documents requiring Evelyn’s consent had been processed by Harrison’s former CFO, Martin Voss.

Voss had retired to Connecticut.

Arthur contacted him.

He refused to speak.

Then Bennett Cross began unraveling.

A major lender declined to refinance a development loan.

Two institutional partners demanded additional disclosures.

The company’s stock in a publicly traded subsidiary fell sharply.

Harrison blamed Evelyn.

She heard about his anger from Olivia.

“He thinks you leaked the debt situation.”

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because you would've done it legally and attached exhibits.”

Evelyn laughed.

Her daughter knew her well.

Then Olivia said something unexpected.

“Sienna called me.”

“Why?”

“She wanted me to convince you to settle.”

Evelyn sat straighter.

“Did she say why?”

“She sounded scared.”

Three nights later, Sienna appeared at Evelyn’s apartment.

No makeup.

No red dress.

No confidence.

She looked twenty-five.

Actually twenty-five.

Evelyn opened the door but did not invite her in.

“What do you want?”

“I need to talk.”

“Then talk.”

Sienna glanced down the hallway.

“Not here.”

Against Arthur’s likely advice, Evelyn let her inside.

Sienna sat on the edge of a chair.

“Harrison is moving money.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You're his assistant.”

“Not anymore.”

Evelyn stared.

“He fired me yesterday.”

“Why?”

“I asked about the guarantees.”

Evelyn's pulse quickened.

“How did you know?”

“I saw an email.”

Sienna swallowed.

“He knew.”

“About the forged signatures?”

“I don't know who forged them. But Harrison knew there were problems with the documents years ago.”

“Can you prove that?”

Sienna opened her purse.

A flash drive rested inside.

“I copied emails.”

Evelyn did not touch it.

“Why are you giving this to me?”

Tears filled Sienna’s eyes.

“Because you were right.”

“About what?”

“The way he talks about women when he doesn't need them anymore.”

Evelyn felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Sienna continued.

“He told me I was becoming a liability. Yesterday he said I was replaceable.”

Evelyn remembered a twenty-five-year-old woman standing in her kitchen wearing Harrison’s shirt.

She could have been cruel.

Part of her wanted to be.

Instead she said, “Give the drive to Arthur.”

Sienna stared.

“You don't hate me?”

“I don't like you.”

A startled laugh escaped Sienna through tears.

“But hating you would require me to make you more important to my marriage than you were.”

Sienna flinched.

Evelyn softened slightly.

“Harrison made vows to me. You didn't.”

“I knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“So I'm not innocent.”

“No.”

Sienna nodded.

“But you also don't deserve to be destroyed because you made a bad choice.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Sienna whispered, “Why are you being kind to me?”

Evelyn thought about it.

“Because I spent too many years around a man who confused cruelty with strength.”

The flash drive changed everything.

One email from five years earlier contained a message from Martin Voss to Harrison.

We cannot continue using E.B. authorization without direct verification. If she challenges these guarantees, we have exposure.

Harrison replied:

She won't challenge anything. Evelyn trusts me.

Evelyn read those four words repeatedly.

They hurt more than the affair.

More than expired goods.

She had trusted him.

He had not merely taken that trust for granted.

He had monetized it.

Arthur contacted federal investigators.

The divorce negotiations stopped.

Harrison called Evelyn from a private number.

“Do you understand what you're doing?”

“Yes.”

“You could destroy everything we built.”

“We?”

“You wanted your contribution recognized. Congratulations. That means the consequences belong to you too.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

There was the old Harrison.

The man who made his fear somebody else's responsibility.

“You forged my consent.”

“I didn't forge anything.”

“You knew.”

“You don't understand what was happening then. We were days from collapse.”

“So you used me.”

“I saved our family.”

“No. You saved your company.”

“I made you rich!”

Evelyn’s voice became quiet.

“You made yourself rich, Harrison. Whenever it was successful, it was yours. Now that it may collapse, suddenly it belongs to both of us.”

Silence.

Then he said the one thing she never expected.

“Please.”

Evelyn froze.

Harrison Bennett did not plead.

“Withdraw the complaint.”

“I can't.”

“You can.”

“No.”

His breathing changed.

“You're choosing Mercer over your family.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at her reflection.

No hidden silver.

She had stopped coloring her temples two months earlier.

“I’m choosing myself.”

She ended the call.

The following morning, the story broke.

Not the forged guarantees.

Something else.

MERCER URBAN PARTNERS NAMES EVELYN MORGAN CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER.

Her photograph appeared beside the announcement.

Not Mrs. Harrison Bennett.

Not society wife.

Evelyn Morgan.

Forty-eight.

Experienced.

May you like

Visible.

And very much not expired.
