Chapter 5 - The Queen Walks Into the Trap

At midnight, Serafina entered the Brooklyn Navy Yard alone.

At least, that was what Lorenzo was supposed to believe.

Beneath her black coat, a microphone transmitted every word to Gabriel, Cesare, and Costello.

The leather journal rested beneath her arm.

Its real pages had been removed.

Lorenzo did not know that.

Rain struck the warehouse roof.

Serafina walked between rusting shipping containers until she saw Luca.

He sat tied to a metal chair beneath a hanging industrial lamp.

Blood marked his temple.

Lorenzo stood behind him.

“You came.”

Serafina stopped twenty feet away.

“You sound surprised.”

“I expected Gabriel to lock you somewhere.”

“He tried controlling me once.”

Lorenzo smiled.

“How did that work out?”

Serafina’s face remained expressionless.

“Where are your men?”

“Nearby.”

“Send Luca to me.”

“Ledger first.”

“No.”

Lorenzo laughed.

“You think you’re negotiating?”

“I know I am.”

She held up the journal.

“You kill Luca, you lose your leverage. You kill me, you lose the ledger. You move toward me before Luca is released, and I burn it.”

Lorenzo’s smile faded.

Serafina removed a lighter.

“Your father would be proud.”

“My father underestimated your family.”

“So did you.”

For a second, something ugly moved behind his eyes.

“You know what your greatest advantage was, Serafina?”

She waited.

“Gabriel loved you.”

Lorenzo walked slowly around Luca.

“And love makes men stupid.”

Serafina’s jaw tightened.

“I only had to give him enough evidence to confirm what he already feared.”

“Betrayal.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo smiled.

“Gabriel believes loyalty is temporary because everyone he trusted eventually disappointed him.”

His voice lowered.

“I didn’t create his mistrust. I simply aimed it at you.”

Inside a surveillance van three blocks away, Gabriel heard every word.

He closed his eyes.

Cesare glanced at him.

“You love her?”

Gabriel stared at the monitor.

“Yes.”

“Then understand something.”

Cesare’s voice was quiet.

“Love without trust is possession.”

Gabriel did not defend himself.

“I know.”

Back inside the warehouse, Lorenzo cut Luca’s restraints.

“Walk.”

Luca staggered toward Serafina.

Halfway across the floor, Lorenzo raised his pistol.

Serafina saw it.

“DOWN!”

Luca dropped.

The gunshot exploded.

Serafina moved behind a steel column.

Gunfire erupted from both sides.

Gabriel’s teams breached the building.

Costello’s men entered through the eastern loading bay.

Cesare’s soldiers came through the roof access.

Lorenzo had expected Rossi.

He had not expected three organizations.

Within minutes, his defensive perimeter collapsed.

Serafina moved toward Luca.

“Can you walk?”

“I’ve had better evenings.”

“Good.”

She pulled him behind cover.

Then Lorenzo appeared.

His gun pressed against Serafina’s back.

“Drop it.”

She froze.

Gabriel emerged from the smoke.

He saw them.

Everything stopped.

Lorenzo wrapped one arm around Serafina.

The pistol moved toward her stomach.

Gabriel’s face changed.

“Don’t.”

Lorenzo smiled.

“There he is.”

“Take me.”

Serafina looked at Gabriel.

“No.”

Gabriel ignored her.

“Let her go. You want the Rossi family? Take it.”

Lorenzo laughed.

“You would surrender everything?”

“Yes.”

Serafina stared at him.

Gabriel slowly lowered his weapon.

“My territory. My accounts. My position. Everything.”

“Gabriel.”

He looked at her.

For the first time, there was no command in his eyes.

Only apology.

“You were right.”

Lorenzo tightened his grip.

Gabriel continued.

“I should have believed you.”

“Now is really not the time.”

A tiny smile touched his mouth.

“I know.”

Then his expression broke.

“I’m sorry.”

Serafina’s throat tightened.

Lorenzo pushed the pistol harder against her.

“Touching.”

He reached for the journal.

Serafina let him take it.

Lorenzo opened it.

Blank pages.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

Serafina smiled.

“The part where you realize you were never the smartest person in the room.”

She drove her heel into his foot and threw her weight sideways.

Gabriel fired.

The bullet struck Lorenzo’s shoulder.

He dropped the weapon.

Luca tackled him.

Within seconds, Lorenzo was on the concrete.

Gabriel rushed toward Serafina.

He stopped inches away.

Every instinct told him to touch her.

He did not.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“The baby?”

“Fine.”

Gabriel’s eyes closed briefly.

Then Serafina noticed Lorenzo laughing from the floor.

“You think this is finished?”

Cesare approached.

Lorenzo looked at him.

“You still haven’t told her.”

Serafina turned.

“Told me what?”

Cesare went still.

Lorenzo smiled through blood.

“Ask your grandfather why Gabriel’s father was at the Palermo house the night your family died.”

Silence swallowed the warehouse.

Serafina slowly faced Gabriel.

Gabriel looked genuinely confused.

“My father?”

Lorenzo laughed.

“Everyone has secrets.”

Serafina looked at Cesare.

“Tell me.”

May you like

The old man’s silence answered before his mouth did.

And suddenly the victory tasted like ash.
